Taking Sides: Real World vs. Road Rules

I'm sure this has been done before. Never really liked Road Rules. Im going with Real World.

Chris V. (Chris V), Thursday, 22 August 2002 11:26 (twenty-three years ago)

Road Rules I have only ever seen a tiny bit of, but what I have seen was dull.

Nicole (Nicole), Thursday, 22 August 2002 11:41 (twenty-three years ago)

If you're all about conflict, The Real World is your show. The people are made to live together for a longer period of time and are basically forced to do tons of stuff together.

Road Rules is a different kettle of fish. It's a much shorter trip, but the people are in much closer quarters on a very restrained budget. They're also made to do all sorts of goofy stunts. If watching testy people do dangerous/silly things is your bag, it's gotta be about Road Rules.

The interesting thing is that most of the really conniving people have ended up on The Real World (Beth S, Tami, Justin, Tonya, Cara, Kyle, Kaia, Matt, Stephen, Montana, Miami Melissa, Joe), most of the truly psychotic/sociopathic people have ended up on Road Rules (Abe, Chadwick, Belou, MV Holly, Los, Adam, Laterrian/LT [inventing a second personality to absolve yourself of misdeeds = sociopathic], Ayanna, Veronica).

I want to hear Chief White Lotus chime in on this since he was on Road Rules.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 22 August 2002 13:09 (twenty-three years ago)

That little blond on the new RR is hot.

Chris V. (Chris V), Thursday, 22 August 2002 13:22 (twenty-three years ago)

Kendal? Yeah, she's a cutie.

I'm still mad that they kicked Sarah off. I mean, I understand why and all, but she was the most likeable person on the show!

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 22 August 2002 13:38 (twenty-three years ago)

Conniving vs. psychopathic FITE! And I don't mean that one show, I mean in general.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 22 August 2002 14:25 (twenty-three years ago)

We are learning so much about Dan on these MTV threads.

(Please add to your "conniving" list: Miami Flora.)

nabisco (nabisco), Thursday, 22 August 2002 14:50 (twenty-three years ago)

I couldn't decide if Flora was more conniving or psychopathic, which is why I left her off. She was extremely normal on the last challenge, though.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 22 August 2002 15:11 (twenty-three years ago)

I thought of that, Dan, but I think she lands squarely on the "conniving" side: see (a) very sneakily playing off two boyfriends and skanking self into service job, and (b) elaborate power-play to retrieve nudity tape.

nabisco (nabisco), Thursday, 22 August 2002 15:40 (twenty-three years ago)

I see your point. I also had troubles with putting Veronica on the psychotic/sociopathic list; it really depends on if you viewed her kleptomania as intentional or not. After watching the season again, it really seemed like she had no idea until after the fact where appropriate boundaries were (especially with Ayanna's paper; Pua's top is a harder sell).

I thought about listing Gladys, but she was goaded into her actions by Abe (aka The Most Evil Road Ruler Ever).

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 22 August 2002 15:50 (twenty-three years ago)

yes...kendall. Did they just get another cast member as well. She looks like Kendall.

Chris V. (Chris V), Thursday, 22 August 2002 15:58 (twenty-three years ago)

They replaced Sarah with a younger version of Kendal who, five minutes after entering the RV, announced that she had a boyfriend but was rarely faithful in her relationships. Eric cheered. Kendal was not pleased.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 22 August 2002 16:04 (twenty-three years ago)

Aaargh to be 18, single and on road rules (30 lbs lighter too).

Chris V. (Chris V), Thursday, 22 August 2002 16:10 (twenty-three years ago)

four months pass...
dave e. is trippin on this battle of the sexes

ron (ron), Tuesday, 7 January 2003 06:29 (twenty-three years ago)

Battle of the Sexes looks like its going to be great. Two fights in the first 5 minutes, Puck crying, Puck getting a mullet, David calling Puck a wife beater. Classic tv all the way.

Chris V. (Chris V), Tuesday, 7 January 2003 12:33 (twenty-three years ago)

I missed the first 15 minutes, so I didn't see the Melissa/Julie throwdown. SIGH.

Puck and David, though... HAHAHAHAHA!!! And the guys losing to the team of Melissa and Amaya.... BWAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!

I realize I've never actually seen Antoine on TV before, though.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 7 January 2003 14:32 (twenty-three years ago)

I am feeling sad I missed this, since I've heard a few people mentioning the Melissa/Julie and David/Puck throwdowns. However I knew Dang would have some sort of review of the spectacle posted here.

Nicole (Nicole), Tuesday, 7 January 2003 14:43 (twenty-three years ago)

Review nothing! He merely chortled.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 7 January 2003 15:42 (twenty-three years ago)

their little teaser collage at the end of the show promised much much more drama!!

it was really interesting, after seeing how puck has been treated in the past, to have the entire cast rally around him

ron (ron), Tuesday, 7 January 2003 15:48 (twenty-three years ago)

He's a changed man, so he says. I hope we get part II of "Come On Be My Baby Tonight."

Chris V. (Chris V), Tuesday, 7 January 2003 15:53 (twenty-three years ago)

Did Melissa wipe that smug/dopey look Julie always has off her face? Did something really painful and horrible happen to Julie? I live in hope...

Nicole (Nicole), Tuesday, 7 January 2003 15:54 (twenty-three years ago)

Melissa is quite possibly one of the ugliest women I have ever seen. Somebody should wipe the face off that Melissa.

Chris V. (Chris V), Tuesday, 7 January 2003 15:56 (twenty-three years ago)

But Julie is just so annoying! The "Hey! I'm Mormon and Punk! How wacky is that?!" schtick just doesn't work. Melissa is annoying too, but she shares my Julie hate so she is forgiven.

Nicole (Nicole), Tuesday, 7 January 2003 15:58 (twenty-three years ago)

Just occurred to me that, having been exactly in between the two parties in an on-the-verge-of-violence blow-up a little before Xmas, this is all a bit unfun...

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 7 January 2003 15:58 (twenty-three years ago)

oh I hate Julie too! But I hate Melissa as well. Actually I don't think anybody on the New Orleans cast I cared for. With the exception of "come On Be My Baby Tonight."

Chris V. (Chris V), Tuesday, 7 January 2003 16:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Ned, girls fighting over you again? ;-)

I have no idea if there was any violence, I just wish for violence to be visited upon Julie. Possibly by God, since she makes such a bfd about being Mormon.

Yes, everyone in New Orleans deserved to have the snot beat out of them, but Julie is my Most Hated.

Nicole (Nicole), Tuesday, 7 January 2003 16:01 (twenty-three years ago)

Here's the lowdown on what I saw:

David RWLA got bizarro-furious at Puck RWSF, claiming that Puck's "wife" (actually fiancee) called David continuously, complaining about Puck beating her. Puck was remarkably restrained in his response up until the point at which he spit on David. David then went on a crusade to get Puck kicked off and almost succeeded, but no one else was really having it. (Besides, Gladys RRLA, Jisela RRTQ and Ayanna RRSAS all weren't about to let that happen.) It should be a measure of how bizarrely out of line David RWLA was acting that everyone else on the cast unanimously rallied around PUCK. As Eric RRCC put it, "I'm the youngest guy on this cast [he's 19], and I'm acting more like a man than these THIRTY-YEAR-OLDS." David is so unreasonable that Puck packs his bags and moves over to the girl's bungalow.

Earlier in the episode, Melissa RWNO screamed at Julie RWNO about stealing speaking engagements from her and professed undying hatred. This is what you call FORESHADOWING.

The competition was Simon Says run by drill seargents. The guys suck ass, but the women hang in there, handily beating the guys. The last duo standing is Melissa and Amaya RWH. (HMMMMMM....)

Back at the ranch, David RWLA is upset that no one has his puny, psychotic back, so he packs his bags and gets the fuck out of dodge despite the best attempts of David RWNO to get him to stay. (Aside: David NO didn't utter a single "Woo woo" the whole episode; I AM SORELY DISAPPOINTED.) His departure means the men don't have to vote anyone off.

The women's inner circle (Melissa, Amaya, Genesis RWB, Aneesa RWC) toys with the idea of booting Emily RRUSA (aka THE CHALLENGE HO; perhaps she should take the hint from losing the previous two challenges she was on), but Melissa does a Jedi mind trick and SURPRISE SURPRISE Julie gets the boot. The men cackle with glee because they saw what happened to the Road Rules team when they voted off their stronger members while the women are torn between public "Oh, that's not right" platitudes and internal "YES THE HORSE-FACE BITCH IS GONE WATCH YOUR BACK, BETH!" jubilation. Ellen RRTQ is the only person who is genuinely upset that Julie is gone and, despite some startlingly good advice from the departing Julie about keeping her head down and flying under the radar, runs straight to the inner circle and repeatedly calls them bitches. Beth RWLA, hold off on packing those bags...

Also, Gladys RRLA revealed that she is pregnant, Anne RRNT appears to have turned herself into a melted Real Doll, and Antoine RRE asked Syrus RWB what part of Africa he came from. I LOVE MTV!!!

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 7 January 2003 16:08 (twenty-three years ago)

Ned, girls fighting over you again? ;-)

Uh, more my ex-housemates in their second big blow-up at each other of the day that ended in threats of legal action, destroying things and general hatred. Have I mentioned how glad I am to live on my own now?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 7 January 2003 16:12 (twenty-three years ago)

Regarding the NO cast:

Melissa is an annoying prima donna, but I'd still hang with her because she's insane and funny.

Danny and Kelly did a lot to redeem themselves on the last challenge, Kelly by not being an ueberbitch and Danny by developing a personality.

David and Jamie... Urgh.

Matt deserves beatings. Repeated beatings. However, he seems to have realized exactly how annoying he appeared on television and is staying away from the challenge scene.

Julie... I really hate Julie, largely because she was so sympathetic at the beginning of the season, but then as time went on you began to see the Machiavellan wheels spinning themselves into more manipulation of camera time. Notice in the NO season that whenever something happens to another castmember, Julie experiences a crisis. Plus, stalking MATT????

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 7 January 2003 16:13 (twenty-three years ago)

For Julie to be more hated that Beth RWLA is quite something.

Nicole (Nicole), Tuesday, 7 January 2003 16:14 (twenty-three years ago)

Well, even though Beth is Satan, I don't think she's repeatedly stolen money from people before.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 7 January 2003 16:18 (twenty-three years ago)

This all sounds like what a typical episode of Friends should be like.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 7 January 2003 16:26 (twenty-three years ago)

Skee Dappa Dee Dappa Dee!

Chris V. (Chris V), Tuesday, 7 January 2003 16:30 (twenty-three years ago)

Ned, why do you think I watch "The Real World" and "Road Rules" and avoid "Friends"?

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 7 January 2003 16:34 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh, it's clear enough, m'friend. I just avoid it all together. ;-) Actually, one of the things I've done now that I told AT&T to pack sand is to cancel cable entirely -- the TV really is finally nothing more than the video monitor it should be...

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 7 January 2003 16:40 (twenty-three years ago)

the "vagina" chant was wonderful. Would have been hilarious if the gents started screaming out "cock, cock, cock".

Chris V. (Chris V), Tuesday, 7 January 2003 19:11 (twenty-three years ago)

I AM SO ANGRY THAT I FORGOT TO MENTION THAT. Yes, the women's rallying cry was to huddle up and scream "VAGINA!" repeatedly. Of course they won!

Had the guys started shouting "COCK COCK COCK!" I would have burst a blood vessel laughing.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 7 January 2003 19:16 (twenty-three years ago)

The New York Real World is on constant rotation on MTV here for some reason. They're all kind of foolish but that Corel girl! What a bitch, seriously she is the worst human being I have ever seen on tv.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 7 January 2003 20:28 (twenty-three years ago)

Coral was pretty nightmarish on her season, but she reminds me a lot of a close friend from college so I cut her a lot of slack. Also, when she was on the last challenge she RULED. Watching her diss Stephen was a huge highlight.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 7 January 2003 20:30 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh is there challenges? Weird. It was so bad when she was berating that, admittedly thick, Mike dude for not knowing about black history. I mean maybe he's a bit ignorant but god he didn't deserve that. Also the Outkast tickets scandal! Silly stuff. I've seen every episode of that series x 10 at this stage.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 7 January 2003 20:33 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah, there was a Real World vs Road Rules Battle of the Seasons last year (Mike and Coral were teammates!) and she was just awesome on it. Also, I think she softened A LOT during her season; the whole reconciliation with Mike showed that. I also think that there may have been something extra that was said that got edited out, going by the frightening horseshit that Mike's father was saying when he came to visit. I actually think that living with Malik, Coral and Nicole and seeing that there wasn't a quantum difference between them and himself, then hearing his father spout the "shitfless untrustworthy black people" nonsense did more to accelerate his understanding of racial equality than anything else.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 7 January 2003 20:37 (twenty-three years ago)

and look at him now!

(seriously though, it does seem like he grew a lot, unlike, say, amaya or ruthie)

maura (maura), Tuesday, 7 January 2003 20:39 (twenty-three years ago)

HAHAHAHAHAHA!

I was considering linking to that. He's now vaguely Popeye-shaped!

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 7 January 2003 20:42 (twenty-three years ago)

I thought though when she "reconciled" she went on the confessional and said how she couldn't believe that Mike believed her. That was even worse, he made her the Valentines Card etc.

At first I thought Mike meant that black people being the victims of social inequality resulted in disadvantages of education but was too dumb to explain it. Is this even the case? I think you may be right about something being edited out though, he did seem a bit ignorant, though not malicious. Malik was a very sensible guy. I still think every time I watch it that they always pick people whose constant desire to "resolve" things etc etc causes more trouble.

I mean if I was in there I think I'd leave for a day if I had a big fight. I found the Irish guy on it amusing, them wondering was he an alcoholic and the truth sadly was that loads of Irish people drink that much, I mean all Irish aren't alcoholics but lots of Irish do see nothing wrong with falling over drunk. It was an interesting difference highlighted.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 7 January 2003 20:44 (twenty-three years ago)

That wasn't the reconciliation. That's too early in the season. Around the tenth or eleventh show Coral drops the chip from her shoulder and becomes the sarcastic house sweetheart.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 7 January 2003 21:35 (twenty-three years ago)

If there are any independently wealthy ilX0rs I should like to propose that we set up an ilX0r Real World

I will film it free of charge

J0hn Darn13ll3 (J0hn Darn13ll3), Tuesday, 7 January 2003 21:46 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh, as if the regular Real World wasn't scary and amusing enough...

Nicole (Nicole), Tuesday, 7 January 2003 21:56 (twenty-three years ago)

from that page Maura linked : ***Now speaks weekly to large college audiences where he recounts his experiences on Real World and applies them to problems faced by students in similar situations.

That is EXTREMELY depressing. Also the fact that he's YOUNGER (albeit a few months) than me. Hod on, i have to puke

===========

i'm actually v impressed w/ Dan's thorough knowledge of all RW/RR episodes past, I'm glad then i'm not the only person who remembers a lot of them. It seems like a curse to actually get on since then you're tempted to come back and do all these challenges and things after the show has ended, it's like how much of your life's identity is then built around having been on this show? Congrats to people like Tami who have rarely ever come back - it's been a decade now and Puck should have said no, but its good for the drama that he said yes. Some seasons were so boring, like that London season - there was no conflict there! I think the current Las Vegas season is the trashiest/sleaziest, with Trichelle the Ho's clueless beating all whoriness from seasons past. Remember "supermodel" Eric Nies? muahaha

Not ignoring Julie (who indeed is a media monster - i saw a snippet of her Larry King Live interview where she's saying somethig like "yes. i am a mormon." - as if she's now a chosen one!!!) I still think the world, most despicable character of alll time is Kaia. She was horrifying, i mean granted Ruthie/Amaya were losers, but the look in her eyes - she could easily kill, and had some weird will-to-power attitude that would shame Hitler. in fact that whole Hawaii season was the worst, not one person had any degree of likability and the token black guy, Tech, i think? was mugging for his "hope-i-get-to-be-an-MTV-VJ!" campaign all along. They should have fallen into a volcano.

Vic (Vic), Tuesday, 7 January 2003 22:24 (twenty-three years ago)

Ruthie was deeply tragic, but I still liked her. I hated Amaya early on, but ended up feeling sorry for her, largely because it was fairly obvious that she'd never been thrown into a situation where she was forced to deal with people who disliked her. (In the real world, she probably would have moved out as soon as she broke up with Colin.) Kaia (aka MARGARET) and Matt were Satanspawn incarnate and two of the most loathsome individuals to ever be on the Real World. Teck was MY BOY and took everything exactly as seriously as he should have (ie, not at all).

It hurts me in my heart that you wrote the phrase "Congrats to people like Tami". I can't think of a single redeeming feature for her (beyond her disinclination to continue whoring for BMP; BETH GET A CLUE). The LA cast in general was deeply, deeply repellent; I think Dom was the only person who I didn't want to see horribly murdered as the show went on.

As presented on the show (remember, we don't really KNOW these people), the ones I disliked the most would be the entire LA cast except Dom, Puck RWSF, Melissa RWM, Montana RWB, Stephen RWS, Nathan RWS, Kaia-Marge RWH, Matt RWH, Julie RWNO, Matt RWNO, Rachel RWB2NY, Vyle Kyle RWC, Cara RWC, Tonya RWC, Trishelle RWLV, and Brynn RWLV.

My faves would be Heather RWNY, Dom RWLA, Pam RWSF, Mohammed RWSF, Sharon RWL, Neil RWL, Cynthia RWM, Sarah RWM, Kameelah RWB, Genesis RWB, Lindsey RWS, Irene RWS, Teck RWH, Ruthie RWH, MElissa RWNO, Coral RWB2NY, Keri RWC, and Alton RWLV.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 7 January 2003 23:31 (twenty-three years ago)

(Holy shit, did I really post that? And I didn't have to look up cast lists, either... I AM SAD AND OBSESSED.)

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 7 January 2003 23:55 (twenty-three years ago)

Irulan is lucky that she's pretty, because otherwise people would be slapping her left and right. Actually, I think the most normal person is Ragemonster Arissa.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 10 January 2003 14:47 (twenty-three years ago)

You are OTM Dang. It's fine for Irulan's relationship to be open, but then why care what Alton is doing? And Arissa has serious issy-yous.

Nicole (Nicole), Friday, 10 January 2003 14:50 (twenty-three years ago)

She needs some anger management in the worst way, but the only oddness I see about her behavior is the magnitude; the emotions themselves seem justified. (Particularly when you think about the people she's reacting towards; could you keep yourself from flying into blinding rages if you lived with man-slut Alton, not-so-bad-girl Brynn, mecha-ho Trishelle, petulant-princess Steve, and man-bot Frank?)

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 10 January 2003 15:04 (twenty-three years ago)

I saw the episode of RWNY where they had to make the Dido/Outkast windowframes last night. That Nicole really came across badly, "point blank, period", dear oh dear. Also the Arista executives are really funny, they seem to be the ultimate in "think outside the box" office crap talk.

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 10 January 2003 15:16 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah, I agree I probably would also have a meltdown if I lived those lunys, but I think something is off with her where she needs counseling. I thought everybody took the team-building exercise far too seriously, but the part where she was crying because she was afraid to do the trust fall made me really worry for her. I think MTV should screen people a bit better, because she seems pretty fragile and the whole experience could be very damaging.

I should talk, I would have ended up decking Trashelle and Steve within the first week.

Nicole (Nicole), Friday, 10 January 2003 15:19 (twenty-three years ago)

I seriously think that the casting director for RWLV has a copy of the DSM-IV(r) to hand and only selected people who fit 90% or better of the criteria for Narcissitcic Personality Disorder

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Friday, 10 January 2003 15:21 (twenty-three years ago)

Nicole didn't fit into that house AT ALL, sadly. It's too bad, because I think in different circumstances she'd be really fun to hang out with.

Nicole and Mike screaming at each other in the street while Coral and Lori walked by with their heads down so they could do work = CLASSIC!

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 10 January 2003 15:21 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah and the argument was so funny "I'm not stoopid you're stoopid" "Stoopid? Don't disrespect me" "I will too cos you're stoopid and you disrespected me first" "don't you tell me I disrespected you and don't you call me stoopid, you disrespected me and you're stoopid". etc etc etc.

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 10 January 2003 15:23 (twenty-three years ago)

I missed the part of the trust exercise episode where she started crying about the trust fall. Really, all I remember about that episode is them being forced to say "YOU DIE!" to each other over and over... CLASSIC!

Arissa does have some issues, don't get me wrong, but I think her issues are addressable. Frank and Alton also seem like they could be pulled back from the brink. Brynn, Frank and Trishelle are pretty much gone and Irulan, as I said before, is pretty enough that she's going to be able to manipulate most people into doing what she wants.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 10 January 2003 15:25 (twenty-three years ago)

I would take a dump on trichelle.

Chris V. (Chris V), Friday, 10 January 2003 15:26 (twenty-three years ago)

It's Trashelle. It's more fitting, anyway. I don't understand how anyone can only have two brain cells and be able to survive. Looks, I guess, but she's not that pretty.

Nicole (Nicole), Friday, 10 January 2003 15:34 (twenty-three years ago)

yeah, dan you are right it was LT. i bow down to your mtv knowledge! ;-)

ron (ron), Friday, 10 January 2003 15:36 (twenty-three years ago)

Has there ever been a bigger whore on the RW? Cara was close.

Chris V. (Chris V), Friday, 10 January 2003 15:40 (twenty-three years ago)

I would say Trashelle any day because she's so stupid about it. She goes around having tons of unprotected sex and then seems surprised that she might be pregnant?

Nicole (Nicole), Friday, 10 January 2003 15:46 (twenty-three years ago)

(My second Frank should have been Steve.)

On the Real World? I don't think anyone can really challenge Trishelle or Cara among the women, but among the MEN you have Syrus, Teck, Dave RWNO, and Alton (aargh why are all the black men hoes). If you go to Road Rules, though, you get to put THE ALMIGHTY JISELA into play!

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 10 January 2003 15:58 (twenty-three years ago)

Alton uses the sensitive guy approach. and it works.

Chris V. (Chris V), Friday, 10 January 2003 16:00 (twenty-three years ago)

OH shit, I TOTALLY forgot about Amaya! She only had the two random hookups, but there was the whole BLISTER CONTROVERSY!

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 10 January 2003 16:02 (twenty-three years ago)

amaya was a walking blister. last time i saw a set of lips like that they had a hook in them.

Chris V. (Chris V), Friday, 10 January 2003 16:03 (twenty-three years ago)

Her face was so shiny! Tone down the makeup, girl.

Nicole (Nicole), Friday, 10 January 2003 16:03 (twenty-three years ago)

Poor Amaya. I really didn't expect to have much sympathy for her at the start of that season, but having to deal with evil Justin (who was HILARIOUS; I wish he hadn't left), Kaia-bot and Matt IN ADDITION TO Colin The World's Worst Ex is too much. No wonder she ended up bonding with Ruthie.

The Melissa-Julie fued continues on MTV's website, BTW.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 10 January 2003 16:18 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm beginning to think from all these descriptions that both shows were created by those people who enjoyed doing those random experiments on others on campus for their psychology classes.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 10 January 2003 16:22 (twenty-three years ago)

That sounds about right.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 10 January 2003 16:23 (twenty-three years ago)

Bunim-Murray, yes.

"Trashelle" is great name. Does anyone remember how she totally ho-ed down with that guy on the last RW/RR challenge, from RR...the very last RR, what was his name? And he was involved with another RR chick too. Which may bring up a point: are we just subconsciously playing into men=stud, women = slut dichotomy here, since would we think these girls' behavior was so repulsive if indeed they were all men or um, black men ?

I'm forgetting, who did Cara sleep around with? And wasn't there a lesbian who was pretty slutty too, or am I thinking of somethin else?

Vic (Vic), Friday, 10 January 2003 18:04 (twenty-three years ago)

Cara slept with Todd of "Big Head Todd" fame. Whoopee chalk that one up in the record books.

Chris V. (Chris V), Friday, 10 January 2003 18:07 (twenty-three years ago)

Trashelle hooked up with Eric RRCC. ("Trashelle", BTW, is the officially PlanetSucks nickname for Trishelle and is where I got MElissa from. They also think Kaia-Marge is an android and call her KA-1a.)

Cara also got it on in a lavatory bathroom with a visiting friend and tried to put moves on another ex, who said, "NONONONONO!"

I think I missed all of Aneesa's sluttiness.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 10 January 2003 19:04 (twenty-three years ago)

I had a coworker who was friends with Cara, who she said insists that she didn't sleep with many guys at all, and the show was manipulated to make her look like a slut.

Incidentally watching "The Real World" is like seeing Eisenstein's Film Form in action. The varieties of montage to achieve different effects is staggering. Good use is made of the Kushelov effect whereby cutting from some event to "Real World" cast members with blank looks on their faces alternately invokes fright, contempt, disbelief, awe, etc.

Amateurist (amateurist), Friday, 10 January 2003 19:30 (twenty-three years ago)

Looking back on it, I don't think Cara was as active as we were led to believe, BUT she did basically tell the camera, "Now that I'm single, I'm going to try to sleep with as many people as I can." There's nothing wrong with this, mind you, but no one put those words into her mouth but herself and they definitely colored the motives of her actions for everyone watching.

ALSO, she told Kyle that she was upset that he was interested in Keri and not her and, the way the show displays it, made some passive-aggressive plays for him behind Keri's back while Kyle and Keri were still mildly involved. This doesn't help you dodge the "slut" tag.

So, while I can definitely see how she didn't "seal the deal" with as many people as it seemed, that doesn't mean she wasn't acting slutty.

All of this pales when placed next to Keri telling off Kyle near the end of the season, though. That was one of my favorite television moments of all time.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 10 January 2003 19:38 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm making no claims for or against Cara's alleged sluttiness as I saw exactly two episodes of this show. What was the Keri-Kyle confrontation you mention?

Amateurist (amateurist), Friday, 10 January 2003 19:41 (twenty-three years ago)

After their relationship fizzled, Kyle kept trying to push up on Keri, who wanted nothing to do with him. At some point near the end of the season, after he spent some wildly-contrived time with his younger brother on-camera, she called him out basically for being a muff-tease android who only went on the show so that people would know who he was for his eventual acting/political career. Kyle got mad and tried to respond and she completely mocked him and told him to go do what he did best, which was playing with his balls. It was STELLAR.

Dan alludes to something I've observed in my scant viewing of the last few seasons: do many of these "friends" that the cast members bring over for visits seem a bit unlikely? Is it simply that the presence of the camera impedes their usual rapport, or are these all people of such incredible drive and self-absorption that "friendship" is more like "business partner"?

Amateurist (amateurist), Friday, 10 January 2003 19:48 (twenty-three years ago)

only went on the show so that people would know who he was for his eventual acting/political career

What were her reasons? What are anyone's reasons?

Amateurist (amateurist), Friday, 10 January 2003 19:50 (twenty-three years ago)

There's probably a good deal of "phony friendship" in the later seasons. Earlier seasons, like where Glenn and his band take over the LA house to the intense annoyance of the other roommates, seemed a lot more genuine.

I wanted to go on The Real World because I fell in love with the places they were staying, but I never had access to a videocamera so that I could do an audition tape.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 10 January 2003 19:52 (twenty-three years ago)

Also, there's the "I want to be on TV!"-factor, but lately that seems to have become "I want to use this to springboard my career in media!" which I find perplexing. The only ones I can think of who have successfully done this are Lindsey RWS (Atlanta DJ, but she was interested in that before, anyway) and Teck RWH (via VJ jobs and a "Van Wilder" role).

Alton is a playa. Threesome action in Australia. One of these cast members is sure to have an STD.

I DO NOT UNDERSTAND IRULAN AT ALL.

She has a boyfriend and feels no shame in calling him up and telling him how wonderful he is and how much he loves her etc, but Alton (who is SINGLE) can't talk to any other girls?

YOU DO NOT GET TO CONTROL SOMEONE ELSE'S BEHAVIOR IF YOU ARE NOT REALLY IN A RELATIONSHIP WITH THEM, YOU PSYCHOTIC COW.

is Brynn still on the show. They have taken the drama off her since she got a boyfriend.

Chris V. (Chris V), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 17:01 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah, it's kind of like "Brynn? There's a girl named Brynn who lives in this house?"

Being familiar with Real World cast members in time for The Challenge is the only reason to watch the Real World at this point.

Murgatroid, Thursday, 14 November 2013 22:01 (twelve years ago)

What I'm saying is, do any of you watch The Challenge?

Murgatroid, Thursday, 14 November 2013 22:01 (twelve years ago)

haha I haven't watched in several years, have they banned the classic-era ppl who are pushing or over 40 yet?

smoking, drinking, cracking and showing the MIDDLE FINGER (DJP), Thursday, 14 November 2013 22:02 (twelve years ago)

Do you consider Trishelle "classic-era"? Anyway, she was on the most recent season but she left in a hissy fit in the middle (CLASSIC TRISHELLE).

Murgatroid, Thursday, 14 November 2013 22:13 (twelve years ago)

Las Vegas 1 is right after what I consider to be "classic era" (basically, seasons 1-10, though I could see an argument for 1-15 since so many of the challenge stalwarts came from 11-15)

Have you seen any of the seasons with TJ Lavin as the host? He's so chill!

Murgatroid, Thursday, 14 November 2013 22:21 (twelve years ago)

I mostly remember Johnny Mosely smiling at the idiocy until a fight breaks out, at which point he gets really concerned

I'm sure I've seen TJ though

smoking, drinking, cracking and showing the MIDDLE FINGER (DJP), Thursday, 14 November 2013 22:22 (twelve years ago)

TJ is pretty chill, until he witnesses something stupid (which is fairly regularly, y'know) and then he unleashes his barely-contained smirk.

Murgatroid, Thursday, 14 November 2013 22:24 (twelve years ago)

haha so the exact opposite of Johnny

smoking, drinking, cracking and showing the MIDDLE FINGER (DJP), Thursday, 14 November 2013 22:29 (twelve years ago)

I mean, during the reunion show, one of the contestants from the New Orleans season (I think) got up from his seat to literally smack a girl in the face and if I remember correctly, TJ barely moved an inch (though someone else got up to stop the fight).

Murgatroid, Thursday, 14 November 2013 22:31 (twelve years ago)

Wait wait wait, I just remembered. It's Johnny Moseley who hosts the after-shows/reunion eps now, so it's him who didn't get up to stop the fight. Or maybe he did. I don't remember, I don't really find him all that memorable or likeable. TJ's way better.
