NY crowd: what's being planned?
Anyone: thoughts? Is the world safer than it was, etc.

I am going to be in New Zealand and, I trust, dead asleep at that point. This was in part intentional. I did not want to be in the US at all on the anniversary -- I did not want to deal with the inevitable jingoism disguised as remembrance that too much of the day will take up. There will be news retrospectives with 'deep,' 'serious' music, soft focus interviews of survivors who probably just want to go away and be left alone, idiot messages from BushCo and more. Fuck it -- for that day alone, I want out. The private grief of thousands turned into implicitly patriotic spectacle does not thrill me in the slightest.

personally i think the whole dueling gettysburg address thing in ny is disgusting -- not only because of the politicking (basically there are gonna be two readings of it, one by each party, because few democrats were invited to the governor-sponsored reading) but because is this society that bereft of originality? bleh.

I'm glad I'm not going to be anywhere near a tv.
It's going to be horrendous on so many levels.

Although the media right now says they're going to take a low-key approach to the whole matter I really dread what is likely to happen in Washington to observe the event--plenty of flag-waving and saber-rattling speeches by the Bush administration officials who are dead set on going to war with Iraq, no doubt. Count me among those who will keep the TV turned off.
