Where to start?

NY crowd: what's being planned?

Anyone: thoughts? Is the world safer than it was, etc.

Alan (Alan), Thursday, 22 August 2002 12:44 (twenty-three years ago)

Aren't they urging people to stay away from Ground Zero because of fears of overcrowding?

N. (nickdastoor), Thursday, 22 August 2002 13:21 (twenty-three years ago)

Have the been any serious warnings of another attack yet?

Graham (graham), Thursday, 22 August 2002 13:26 (twenty-three years ago)

Nothing serious, but one never knows (which is of course the whole point). I would say that al-Qaeda doesn't seem to be one for doing things on anniversaries, but that's about it. The Stratfor elves are thinking that apparently the US has done more to disrupt the group than they've let on, which would also make sense if true -- but of course, no guarantees.

I am going to be in New Zealand and, I trust, dead asleep at that point. This was in part intentional. I did not want to be in the US at all on the anniversary -- I did not want to deal with the inevitable jingoism disguised as remembrance that too much of the day will take up. There will be news retrospectives with 'deep,' 'serious' music, soft focus interviews of survivors who probably just want to go away and be left alone, idiot messages from BushCo and more. Fuck it -- for that day alone, I want out. The private grief of thousands turned into implicitly patriotic spectacle does not thrill me in the slightest.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 22 August 2002 14:20 (twenty-three years ago)

September is a great month for anniversaries... Black September, the Munich Olympics, the Sabra & Chatila massacres, 11-9. Great.

DV (dirtyvicar), Thursday, 22 August 2002 14:42 (twenty-three years ago)

plus Yeats' 'September 1913' and Elizabeth Bowen's 'The Last September'

the pinefox, Thursday, 22 August 2002 14:50 (twenty-three years ago)

Hell no September is a good month, especially when compared to August. My friend's birthday and the republic proclamation on the same day

Chupa-Cabras (vicc13), Thursday, 22 August 2002 15:33 (twenty-three years ago)

there are lots of events going on around the US. bell-tollings, rededications of parks, memorial services. i had to research some of them for work.

personally i think the whole dueling gettysburg address thing in ny is disgusting -- not only because of the politicking (basically there are gonna be two readings of it, one by each party, because few democrats were invited to the governor-sponsored reading) but because is this society that bereft of originality? bleh.

maura (maura), Thursday, 22 August 2002 15:37 (twenty-three years ago)

if "this society" = official political culture --> yes

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Thursday, 22 August 2002 16:41 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm gonna get the f*ck out of Dodge. On 8:48 AM, September 11, 2002, I'll be walking on a beach in Montauk, 117.6 miles away from the ghosts.

Michael Daddino, Thursday, 22 August 2002 16:42 (twenty-three years ago)

Its difficult not to feel paranoid in downtown Manhattan. Especially near any tourist attraction. With the sheer amount of people moving around, I can't help but think how easy and impossible to detect it would be for someone to just drop a shopping bag somewhere. Of course I think the same when I hear a plane fly over.

As far as the media whoring the event out, surprise surprise. I just hope they'll be classy enough not to rerun the footage constanty.

bnw (bnw), Thursday, 22 August 2002 17:43 (twenty-three years ago)

A vain hope, I suspect.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 22 August 2002 17:46 (twenty-three years ago)

I'll be in america over that time. an american friend of mine said "lucky you."

RJG (RJG), Thursday, 22 August 2002 18:35 (twenty-three years ago)

What Ned said. I will definitely keep the TV off all day long. Apparently all the networks are vying for the best exclusives--Guiliani, widows, Bush, etc! Not planned in relation to the date, but that night I will be attending the Sakamoto/Morenelbaum 2 extravaganza. Oh, and beware of all the books that are coming down the pike--perfectly timed to cash in on the anniversary--WTC--ploitation....

Mary (Mary), Thursday, 22 August 2002 21:07 (twenty-three years ago)

I will be blowing off work and drinking high gravity malt liquor while playing High Rise Live very loud.

brg30 (brg30), Thursday, 22 August 2002 23:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I think ADBUSTERS should make Sept. 11 "Turn Off the TV Day", or whatever they call it, so that everyone who partcipates can kill two birds with one stone... not that killing birds is better than watching TV...

Aaron Grossman (aajjgg), Friday, 23 August 2002 01:47 (twenty-three years ago)

Working in NYC that day, a block from the Chrysler Building (lucky me). Unless Chimpco sets foot in town and there's a protest going on.

Tadeusz Suchodolski (llamasfur), Friday, 23 August 2002 05:27 (twenty-three years ago)

I'll hopefully be working, Vicky however, is flying that day.

chris (chris), Friday, 23 August 2002 08:21 (twenty-three years ago)

I don't think a mytravel charter flight to Cyprus is going to be targetted, however I am slightly worried that even a threat or false alarm is going to mess up the airspace.

I'm glad I'm not going to be anywhere near a tv.

It's going to be horrendous on so many levels.

Vicky (Vicky), Friday, 23 August 2002 08:58 (twenty-three years ago)

that's what I meant, oops.

chris (chris), Friday, 23 August 2002 09:09 (twenty-three years ago)

Not only will I be working that day, my commute will take me right past the Pentagon.

Although the media right now says they're going to take a low-key approach to the whole matter I really dread what is likely to happen in Washington to observe the event--plenty of flag-waving and saber-rattling speeches by the Bush administration officials who are dead set on going to war with Iraq, no doubt. Count me among those who will keep the TV turned off.

j.lu (j.lu), Friday, 23 August 2002 12:07 (twenty-three years ago)
