Emma can go first.

Graham (graham), Thursday, 22 August 2002 13:14 (twenty-three years ago)

I haven't got a hat!

N. (nickdastoor), Thursday, 22 August 2002 13:21 (twenty-three years ago)

Old hat?

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 22 August 2002 13:23 (twenty-three years ago)

I could have sworn N. was the beret wearing type.

I used to have this black hat that looked like the one Boy George had, which I persisted in wearing up til the early 90s. Yes, it is sad.

Nicole (Nicole), Thursday, 22 August 2002 13:25 (twenty-three years ago)

My pink jacket has a hood, does that count as a hat?

toraneko (toraneko), Thursday, 22 August 2002 13:26 (twenty-three years ago)

Which one?

Ellie (Ellie), Thursday, 22 August 2002 13:27 (twenty-three years ago)

Grey Gap 'bobble hat wihout a bobble' as worn by Kevin Rowland circa 1980 and muggers circa now.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Thursday, 22 August 2002 13:28 (twenty-three years ago)

i got a picture of my hat online. don't ask me why. do i just html it in? i know it wouldn't be 'describing' my hat, but i want to use this very rare opportunity to use my online hat picture.

g-kit (g-kit), Thursday, 22 August 2002 13:34 (twenty-three years ago)

i wear no hat, but my grandparents used to run a hat shop in boston and they would always, in the early 90's, send me those zebra-striped hats whose colors corresponded to the team being advertised and I would never wear them...

Aaron Grossman (aajjgg), Thursday, 22 August 2002 13:37 (twenty-three years ago)

What happened to me going first?

I have a few hats but now my hair is short they all look silly. I have a stripey sunhat from H&M. I have a pink crocheted thing like a tea cosy. I have a boring grey winter hat. I have a magnificent fluffy black Hooch hat with white bits which makes me look like a Bond girl according to my ex. I wouldn't want to eat any of them but if forced I would eat the grey one as it is least fluffy / big.

Emma, Thursday, 22 August 2002 13:38 (twenty-three years ago)

For the past decade I've worn a black velvet beret during fall and winter. Unfortunately, it's only just now beginning to look rather faded, and I haven't found a satisfactory replacement for any amount of money.

j.lu (j.lu), Thursday, 22 August 2002 13:45 (twenty-three years ago)

I went through a period of Michael Moore/Paul Heyman stylee "fat guy with baseball cap" fashion. I grew out of it, thankfully.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 22 August 2002 13:48 (twenty-three years ago)

aw, nobody wants to see my hat.

g-kit (g-kit), Thursday, 22 August 2002 13:52 (twenty-three years ago)

my hats are really dusty from neglect

Nicole (Nicole), Thursday, 22 August 2002 13:54 (twenty-three years ago)

Sorry about that, but it was supposed to be a grebt picture of a hat.

Nicole (Nicole), Thursday, 22 August 2002 13:56 (twenty-three years ago)

http://www.kittenrecords.co.uk/hat.jpg

cool, now i can just try anyway without being the first person to fuck up a picture of a hat. yay!

g-kit (g-kit), Thursday, 22 August 2002 13:58 (twenty-three years ago)

It is tweed. I am not sure if it suits me with a fringe. I wore it all the time two winters ago. It was cheap from H&M! I have no other hats. The Arsemonkey went through a phase of using dusters for headscarves. Clean ones of course. I have no other hats.

Sarah (starry), Thursday, 22 August 2002 13:58 (twenty-three years ago)

I've always wanted a hat but look ridiculous in any kind. I fancy trying a pork pie hat but don't know where to get one.
Emma reminds me I once wore a Hooch hat that belonged to a friend and a strange man stopped me and asked where I got it and did I like like it etc. Turned out he was Mr Hooch and had made that very hat (he said it was a one off sample)

Show us your hat g-kit!! Oh you did already (nu-ILX rocks!)

Simeon (Simeon), Thursday, 22 August 2002 13:59 (twenty-three years ago)

i NEED MORE HATS. currently i have a kind of black floppy felt thing with a wide brim and a brown corduroy train drivers cap. also there are 2 stripey woolly socklike hats from glastonbury, and a kind of bonnety black hat with a cute downward-turning brim. i need a hat for all the weddings i have coming up, and a big sunhat for camping! and oh i do'nt know. i never have the courage to wear them out anyway.

katie (katie), Thursday, 22 August 2002 14:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Does Alix still have that hat she found at Easter? She looked fantastic in it.

Let's not forget Katie's hat:

Graham (graham), Thursday, 22 August 2002 14:03 (twenty-three years ago)

ooo, i like the blue one lots.

g-kit (g-kit), Thursday, 22 August 2002 14:05 (twenty-three years ago)

There is the tigX0r headgear but that is more of a headgear than a hat. I shall let her reflect on her hat status when she enters the realm of the interweb for herself (not that I can't remember, oh no).

Sarah (starry), Thursday, 22 August 2002 14:10 (twenty-three years ago)

I don't wear hats for obvious reasons.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 22 August 2002 14:45 (twenty-three years ago)

I'd like to be able to wear one of those Prussian helmets with a big spike on top - so I'd better start listening to all that Dark Ambient Neo-Classical/Neo-Folk stuff.
What are the most ridiculous but common Twat-Hats? My nominations are those white baseball caps that Ferrety Schemies all over Scotland like to wear, and those woolly things often with long strings down the sides as worn by 'I'm Tibetan, Me' types, or that kid in the 'About A Boy' film.
Coolest hats? The type that Frank Sinatra wears on his '20 Greatest Hits' cover, and those elongated 'stovepipe' things like stretched top hats that you see in Dickens adaptations.

Ray M (rdmanston), Thursday, 22 August 2002 14:51 (twenty-three years ago)

Katie's hat = BEST HAT EVAH

Chupa-Cabras (vicc13), Thursday, 22 August 2002 15:19 (twenty-three years ago)

Look, I'm fed up with this recent flurry of deeply personal questions, I refuse to describe my hat!

jel -- (jel), Thursday, 22 August 2002 15:25 (twenty-three years ago)

Anna to thread!

I have a hat: I bought it for holidays because I burn easily. It is one of those soft cricket hats you see the West Indies wearing a lot, except it's black. I bought it in Jamaica. It looks rub, obv.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Thursday, 22 August 2002 17:19 (twenty-three years ago)

I have a Rhythm Nation 1814 tour cap and a Hudson Hawk wrap party cap, neither of which fit my big fat head properly anymore. I only wear them when I go out to the desert. And every year when I return to the East Coast for Xmas I buy a blue wooly hat from an army navy store. Only to discover that I already have one or more tucked away in the pockets of my winter coat.

Arthur (Arthur), Thursday, 22 August 2002 20:59 (twenty-three years ago)

i have an orange nylon baseball cap with a white foam front with a painting of a shark and very plainly written beneath is the word "Shark"

i also have a purple nylon baseball cap with a picture of donald duck's head ala the pictures they started old disney shorts with

arthur, i want your hudson hawk hat!!!!

boxcubed (boxcubed), Thursday, 22 August 2002 21:06 (twenty-three years ago)

I have a baseball hat and the front looks like this:

http://www.ballparksandroadtrips.com/roadtrip/stats/july/knoxvil.gif

i also have a fisherman's hat that i wear to keep the sun out of my eyes and my hair out of other peoples'. hats can also make very useful props.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Thursday, 22 August 2002 22:29 (twenty-three years ago)

I'd be happy to give you my Hudson Hawk hat, boxcubed. It's a bit dusty, but I'm sure if you send it to the cleaners--do they dry clean baseball caps?--it'll be good as new. E-mail me if you're interested. I think I can get by with just my Rhythm Nation cap.

Arthur (Arthur), Friday, 23 August 2002 00:42 (twenty-three years ago)

i have several fluffy retro kangols. my fave one is white.

di smith (lucylurex), Friday, 23 August 2002 02:31 (twenty-three years ago)

I have three hats. One is a blue and white knitted one with earflaps that ties up under the chin. One is a grey flexfit cap. The other is a brand new one, it's one of those ones that like a cap but sort of squashed down, I think they are called 'cheesecutters'. It is black.

rainy, Friday, 23 August 2002 04:01 (twenty-three years ago)

I have two hats. One is a very wide brimmed, collapsable khaki affair with a chinstrap which I took to Jordan with me last year to protect me from the sun. I only wore it one day, when I was in the desert.

The other hat is a Davy Crockett one with a gen-yoo-ine raccon tail which I bought in a shop opposite the Alamo. When I returned from Texas I actually wore it around Oxford for a few days, until my landlord kindly pointed out that I was liable to get paint thrown over me by animal rights protestors. Since then I only wore it on one occasion, when I was meeting some people in a pub whom I'd only communicated with by e-mail previously, so I'd be easily recognisable, one of whom was sometime ILx poster Lo-fi Space Cadet. On that occasion I walked into the pub with the hat stuffed into my coat pocket (taking care to ensure that the tail wasn't poking out), and donned it once seated at the bar. It was only then that I noticed a work colleague seated a few stools down, who understandably laughed his head off and also reminded me of the event a few months later in his comments in my leaving card.

MarkH, Friday, 23 August 2002 09:14 (twenty-three years ago)

I am so going to buy more hats this weekend. This thread is like hat porn.

Ellie (Ellie), Friday, 23 August 2002 09:17 (twenty-three years ago)

mainly old, faded baseball hats, especially my Animal one which has been all sorts of places with me. Then there's the green fleece hooch cossack style one, the camoflage cricket hat bought while stoned at Reading, and loads of others. I lost my lovely Billabong wooly skull cap hat at ATP though *sobs*

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Friday, 23 August 2002 09:24 (twenty-three years ago)

Haha Martin I was going to make a joke about how "String 'em up" Skidmore should have a black cap... you got there before me.

Tim (Tim), Friday, 23 August 2002 10:07 (twenty-three years ago)

My tuque is black & grey & light blue & is lined with thinsulate. It is more functional than stylish & I like it.

(Overheard: "But, Mom, I'll look stupid wearing a hat." "You'll look even stupider when your ears freeze off.")

Miss Laura, Friday, 23 August 2002 10:15 (twenty-three years ago)

I've got one of those 'bucket' hats. If you just rest it on top of your head and squash it a bit at the front, in your shadow it looks like a pork pie hat. Hey presto! You are one of the Temptations. But only until the sun goes down...

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Friday, 23 August 2002 10:47 (twenty-three years ago)

Tracer, what the heck kind of baseball hat is that? Mine has been personally autographed by the best journeyman righthanded mopup specialist in baseball, Al Levine.

felicity (felicity), Friday, 23 August 2002 11:21 (twenty-three years ago)

five years pass...

is anyone wearing a hat?

braveclub, Thursday, 15 November 2007 11:28 (eighteen years ago)

Earlier on. But not now.

Tom D., Thursday, 15 November 2007 11:30 (eighteen years ago)

A black Kickers woollen number. very smart must say.

Ste, Thursday, 15 November 2007 11:35 (eighteen years ago)

I have the best hat! It is blueish green and has an embroidered bird on it. It's very 40s looking and much more awesome than it sounds. If I remember I will take a pic tonight and post here. I love my hat. In fact, I love it so much that I have two of the same one.

Weird camera phone taken this morning of me in my favortite (ok, only) hat mentioned above! I finally broke it out. I love my hat!

ENBB, Thursday, 29 November 2007 14:59 (eighteen years ago)

Great picture!

I have two hats - one retro late 60s to early 80s Baltimore Orioles baseball cap, and a solid grey knit "skully".

I would LOVE to wear more - I think a hat can be a great addition to a man's wardrobe - but, as I have a HUGE head (size 8 with short hair), I don't make enough money to afford a nicely made hat.

B.L.A.M., Thursday, 29 November 2007 15:25 (eighteen years ago)

I am in the same boat BLAM, huge head and big hair. I have one wide brimmed leather hat and a series of knitted hats for winter (ably knitted by my girlfriend in the main), todays is charcoal grey and teal, I have a felted orange one with earflaps and an orange brown and brown one, I am considering sending the gf to milenary school so she can block out some exciting broad brimmed hats.

Ed, Thursday, 29 November 2007 19:57 (eighteen years ago)

nine years pass...

I have two basic styles of hat, both utilitarian.

I wear baseball-style caps, of uniform color, usually beige, navy blue or black, preferably nylon, without a logo or having a very small unobtrusive one. The cap is to keep the rain off my glasses, the sun out of my eyes, and keeps my bald head protected from the weather.

I also wear shapeless stocking caps, of uniform color, wool or fleece, without a logo or having a very small unobtrusive one. These caps keep my poor, naked head warm when it is cold.

I wear one or the other of these styles of hat about 90% of my time spent outdoors. I do not wear hats indoors.

I fear this information only confirms that my hats, like my posting style, are vmic.

a little too mature to be cute (Aimless), Monday, 16 January 2017 21:52 (nine years ago)

my stocking cap isn't shapeless, it's shaped like a stocking cap

j., Monday, 16 January 2017 22:09 (nine years ago)

(marvels at j's shapely stocking cap)

a little too mature to be cute (Aimless), Monday, 16 January 2017 22:17 (nine years ago)

A brown leather Ecuadorean Stetson I got off ebay 5 years ago. A bit battered but it's got a wire shaping the rim. I like it.

Also a wide brimmed brown suede floppy hat that at its best looks very 1969.
At its worst it flies off my head in the wind..

Stevolende, Monday, 16 January 2017 23:38 (nine years ago)

"13. I have no idea what this fancy hat is"

great article

illegal economic migration (Tracer Hand), Tuesday, 17 January 2017 08:28 (nine years ago)

I have prob knitted over 200 hats. Love making'em, rarely wear'em.

nathom, Tuesday, 17 January 2017 21:10 (nine years ago)

i wear a faded black cleveland baseball cap outside when it is above 50 degrees

i wear either a black or a gray knit hat outside when it is below 50 degrees

marcos, Tuesday, 17 January 2017 21:16 (nine years ago)

i kind of want a really chunky knit hippie hat for winter though
