the tell-tale tv set

ok, so this is weird. i was sitting in my den, when i barely heard a faint beeping. i figured it was coming from another room or from outside, so i slowly moved toward the window, then toward the door. but the beeping grew fainter, not louder, to the point where i figured it had ceased altogether. then i sat back down. and heard it again. beep beep beep beep. very faint. i see what happens when i move a few feet to the right. gets quieter, almost imperceptible. few feet to the left. same thing. what the hell. i figure i've either got ghost sounds in my inner ear, or am going mad, or am a protagonist in a poe story, or some combination of all three. i think--maybe it's one of the electronics. so i successively move closer to the dvd player, the computer, the tv, etc. no dice. the sound gets quieter-to-inaudible, and then becomes audible again when i sit back down. argh! finally i just start unplugging shit like a madman. turns out the beeping is real--it's coming from my television set, but for some reason only an expert in acoustics might be able to explain, it's loudest at the center of the room, several feet from the set. so that's weird. it's also weird that a tv set should be emitting a very quiet beeping for no apparent reason. that concludes events in the life of amateurist part 4,560.
