What part of London should i move to

my new place of work will be on Bloomsbury Street, am looking to put a ceiling of about £500 a month on rent, is it do-able?

Leigh, Thursday, 22 August 2002 13:52 (twenty-three years ago)

Well its doable but you won't be living all that near to where you work. Its on a lot of decent bus routes though - and tube so you could feasibly live anywhere. And its a bit of a renters market at the moment.

Unless of course you want to live on your own in which case it could be a bit tight. I'd suggest north of the river.

Pete (Pete), Thursday, 22 August 2002 13:57 (twenty-three years ago)

west is best.

jel -- (jel), Thursday, 22 August 2002 15:22 (twenty-three years ago)

You can find a big room in a shared flat in EC1 or WC1 for under £500, no problem. Just try to do it before the UCL/SOAS massive descend.

suzy (suzy), Thursday, 22 August 2002 17:10 (twenty-three years ago)

You will be working five minutes from my job (with UCL). As Suzy says, a good sized room not too far away; if you want more, you'll be a decent tube journey away - say half a decent-sized house well into East London.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Thursday, 22 August 2002 17:16 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm moving to Muswell Hill in September -- please tell me nice things about it and reassure me I'm not living in essentially a different part of the world.

It was a very last minute desparate decision. Still, I have a roof terrace now. Handy for the six days of the year it can be used.

Clive, Thursday, 22 August 2002 18:42 (twenty-three years ago)

Well, whether it's a different part of the world rather depends on where you live now. It is no farther from central London than where I'm moving soonish, in Leytonstone.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Thursday, 22 August 2002 18:48 (twenty-three years ago)

muswell hill is ok, theres no tube though, but its really quite nice

decent sized rooms in flatshares in WC1/EC1 for under £500??? pushing it surely? more like £600

gareth (gareth), Thursday, 22 August 2002 18:53 (twenty-three years ago)

Well, I live in Belfast at the minute so it's a mild change of scenery.

Initially the no tube aspect didn't seem to be a problem as there's a ton of bus routes, but more investigation reveals they don't go anywhere useful. No problems getting to Brent Cross shopping centre, however.

Clive, Thursday, 22 August 2002 19:21 (twenty-three years ago)

Pete 'The Busman' Baran lives not too far away from Muswell Hill and will no doubt be able to put you right on buses from there.

RickyT (RickyT), Thursday, 22 August 2002 23:35 (twenty-three years ago)

I currently live in Edinburgh, so i'm no stranger to a high cost of living(on the other hand i'm aware London will be much more expensive). There was a chance of a room in a house in Slough but i now realise what a nightmarish commute that would be especially as i'm going to start at 7am on some days. I've been give conflicting reports as to whether or not the Civil Service gives help with the move, i guess i'll just have to wait and see

Leigh, Friday, 23 August 2002 07:35 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh no Muswell Hill! I saw Fran from Travis buying the Sunday papers in Smiths there once when I went to the hairdressers! And I think Martin Kemp lives there too.

Emma, Friday, 23 August 2002 08:03 (twenty-three years ago)

with a ceiling of £500 and work as central as bloomsbury street, you can pretty much choose where you want (although i think the WC1/EC1 thing is going to be too pricey)

it depends what you're looking for, how central you want to be, what kind of house you want, all that stuff - but, if you can get somewhere in north london on the northern, piccadilly or victoria lines i think that pretty good. arsenal is a superb place to live *nostalgia attack*, tufnell park is sought after and seems nice, kentish towns good but quite rough'n'ready, ditto holloway. its all what you're looking for really!

gareth (gareth), Friday, 23 August 2002 08:09 (twenty-three years ago)

Jonnie and Disco Dave are moving to Muswell Hill too, next month. Dave will be going to UCL too and he's already checked that there's a bus route that takes him straight there.

chris (chris), Friday, 23 August 2002 08:09 (twenty-three years ago)

There are loads of buses from Muswell Hill. I've got to say I don't like it there very much even though my hairdresser is lovely. Hi Demi! It is full of poncey rub shops (by rub shops I don't mean massage parlours btw).

Emma, Friday, 23 August 2002 08:33 (twenty-three years ago)

I dunno, perhaps 'Pilates' is a euphemism for massage parlour up that way.

RickyT (RickyT), Friday, 23 August 2002 08:35 (twenty-three years ago)

isn't it three wheel buggy land?

chris (chris), Friday, 23 August 2002 08:36 (twenty-three years ago)

Pretty much. The pilates studio is in Crouch End not Muswell Hill though they probably have them there too. Actually the pilates studio is only a couple of doors down from the brothel. Hmm.

Emma, Friday, 23 August 2002 08:51 (twenty-three years ago)

the brothels are called Saunas round these parts.

Leigh, Friday, 23 August 2002 08:58 (twenty-three years ago)

I quite like Muswell Hill - you'll be arriving just in time for the grand re-opening of Sainsburys, Clive. I live down the road. You can get 134 and other buses to Highgate and tube it from there. Only about 6 mins on bus. 134 goes all way to Tottenham Court Road an' all.

it's got a nice ratty cinema that does OAP coffee mornings aswell.

nickie (nickie), Friday, 23 August 2002 09:15 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah when I was there I noticed a lot of boys with Trendy Mohawk Haircuts and the like. Still, you can't win them all.

Clive, Friday, 23 August 2002 09:38 (twenty-three years ago)

Parts of north London ppl never seem to move to (I know not why)

Enfield
Edmonton
Southgate
Woodside Park
Bounds Green
Totteridge
North Finchley

MarkH, Friday, 23 August 2002 09:43 (twenty-three years ago)

My dad lived in Muswell Hill in the mid 60s, claimed to have known the Davis bros..

Leigh, Friday, 23 August 2002 09:49 (twenty-three years ago)

My aunt lives in Muswell Hill. The house at the end of her road is called Fairport and used to be owned by Fairport Convention. Also, my cousins used to spy on Ray Davies through holes in his garden fence.

MarkH, Friday, 23 August 2002 10:04 (twenty-three years ago)

Hey - I've got two friends that just moved to Southgate! Both bought houses there!

marianna, Friday, 23 August 2002 10:16 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah my brother has just bought a house near Southgate. I cannot believe my little brother is on the dreaded housing ladder and I am still flat sharing with Pete (no offence Pete ha ha).

Emma, Friday, 23 August 2002 10:34 (twenty-three years ago)

You should check out the Camden area as it's just north of Bloomsbury (walkable distance), very central, and has a vibrant sort of atmosphere. Plus, it's not too pricey!

Philippe, Friday, 23 August 2002 11:19 (twenty-three years ago)

Offence taken.

Camden smells. Live off the Cally Road. Walkable still and you can beat up Dave Q whenever he passes.

Pete (Pete), Friday, 23 August 2002 11:22 (twenty-three years ago)

hmm, a little birdie told me that a guitarist from a very well known band lives just off the cally road..

leigh, Friday, 23 August 2002 11:53 (twenty-three years ago)

Leigh: the Brazen Hussies?

Tim (Tim), Friday, 23 August 2002 11:59 (twenty-three years ago)

a wee bit better know than that, recently toured iberia, melissa and i went to see them...

Leigh, Friday, 23 August 2002 12:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The Clientele?

RickyT (RickyT), Friday, 23 August 2002 12:14 (twenty-three years ago)

The Royal Family and the Poor?

Tim (Tim), Friday, 23 August 2002 12:19 (twenty-three years ago)

Kicker? Saloon?

katie (katie), Friday, 23 August 2002 12:20 (twenty-three years ago)

my friend stayed with saloon the other day, i thought they were in new cross. but then, i know very little about such things

gareth (gareth), Friday, 23 August 2002 12:21 (twenty-three years ago)

The Pines live South of the river, which is good enough for me. Apparently they moved there to be nearer to Roots Manuva, who moved there to be nearer Saloon.

Tim (Tim), Friday, 23 August 2002 12:22 (twenty-three years ago)

heh, the 'loon probably are in New Cross. but they get around!

katie (katie), Friday, 23 August 2002 12:23 (twenty-three years ago)

I moved out of musewell hill in june, Perry Fennick (Billy Mitchell) can often be seen out and about aswell as michelle collins and lots of other great' people- i kinda figure it's a well known soap star hideaway'....and the sainsbury's was meant to be re-opening in june, a bleedin' conspiracy!

chrisb (chrisb), Saturday, 24 August 2002 00:12 (twenty-three years ago)

charltonlido (gareth), Tuesday, 28 October 2003 10:11 (twenty-two years ago)

no more housemates until essential maintenance carried out on various things - and we will miss charlton ;-).

suzy (suzy), Tuesday, 28 October 2003 10:13 (twenty-two years ago)

But but but stevem is not a trustie cycle courier!!

Mark C (Mark C), Tuesday, 28 October 2003 10:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Neither am I. What's your point?

suzy (suzy), Tuesday, 28 October 2003 10:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Hey! I have never, nor will I ever be, a CYCLE COURIER!

kate (kate), Tuesday, 28 October 2003 10:27 (twenty-two years ago)

I just have a deep-seated loathing of cycle couriers. My problem.

Mark C (Mark C), Tuesday, 28 October 2003 10:32 (twenty-two years ago)

So do I, which is why I resent the implication! ;-)

kate (kate), Tuesday, 28 October 2003 10:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Just checking, Mark. Because you couldn't hate the whole being-a-trusta thing, could you, now ;-)?

suzy (suzy), Tuesday, 28 October 2003 10:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Trustas of ILX unite and take over! If we could just get out of bed...

kate (kate), Tuesday, 28 October 2003 10:37 (twenty-two years ago)

But Kate, you are out of bed.

Steve should try all permutations of N1 apart from the Lair of the Dirtqueen.

suzy (suzy), Tuesday, 28 October 2003 10:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, if you find a council flat just off Hoxton Street for under £400 a month, RUN AWAY, RUN AWAY NOW!!!

kate (kate), Tuesday, 28 October 2003 10:43 (twenty-two years ago)

...also, kids, if the landlady is bonkersmadposh and has that attractive overbite/errant-as-if-punched teeth thing going, plus huge collection of Trek bumf, you've stumbled upon La Reine de Merde. Idiot, macrame-loving, petulant, dimwitted, useless relic of Empire...

(he wants a room, Kate, not the whole shebang)

suzy (suzy), Tuesday, 28 October 2003 10:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Sorry, I meant just the room for £400. The key to avoiding landlady mentalists is AVOID ANY WHO LISTEN TO RADIO 4!!! If you go to view your flat and The Archers are on, RUN AWAY RUN AWAY NOW NOW NOW!!!

kate (kate), Tuesday, 28 October 2003 10:52 (twenty-two years ago)

(Oops, sorry, Ed!)

kate (kate), Tuesday, 28 October 2003 10:55 (twenty-two years ago)

I quite enjoyed Gotham, personally.

As to London, I like Bethnal Green/Mile End/Bow. Lived here since 1998, on & off - reasonable value rent (well under £400pcm), good shops, great transport, walkable to London's Trendy Hoxton, Museum of Childhood just around the corner etcetc.

Check out www.moveflat.com, v good flatshare site.

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Tuesday, 28 October 2003 11:04 (twenty-two years ago)

hahahahahaha, stevem designed the logo to that site!

charltonlido (gareth), Tuesday, 28 October 2003 11:14 (twenty-two years ago)

my logo was replaced with the current one, alas - i am still using that site tho as it's very good (and features generally cheaper places than i've seen on findaproperty.co.uk)

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 28 October 2003 11:16 (twenty-two years ago)

The flat next door to ours - in a converted department storie in New Cross - will be available v soon but I think it's best suited for a couple. It's one bed and £700 p/m.
