I rewatched this for the first time in years... the best scene is certainly Danvers' tour of Rebecca's room w/ the new missus.

Oh, hell no. Whatever critic wrote that it's the most flawed of Hitchcock's great movies is right. The boathouse scene quoted in the first post is pretty well-staged -- it's 12 minutes long -- but the dialogue is the most unconvincing (censorship of Maxim's murder of R, as in the novel).

When Anderson says the sea's sound is "so soothing," she strikes this robotic pose that's the one time she goes a little too far, I think. You can tell Hitchcock likes her, George Sanders, and likely Rebecca more than the two leads.

Robin Wood is right to bring up Kim Novak re Fontaine... her awkwardness fits beautifully with the role:

Film is problematic as being a little too much Selznick and not all Hitchcock but once you make adjustment for that, as I finally did recently, there are all sorts of good things in it. Not going to call it perfect though.
