Do allergy sufferers get less sympathy than they deserve?

(Oh boy, exciting evening.) I feel that I lose a lot of time to exhaustion that is allergy related, yet I find that many allergic types are overly skeptical about the extent to which allergies can drain a person's energy. And no I don't think it's depression, damn it, because there are times when I would go out and do things that I really want to do, except that I am feeling too run down from my allergies. Or tonight, for example, if I were feeling a bit more energetic I would at least get some more focused reading done, but instead I sit yawning in front of my PC.

yes.

my allergies aren't that bad any more, but they can still make it difficult for me to concentrate when they're their worst, of course right when courses begin every year.

this is an interesting question. At an intellectual level I appreciate that allergies are real ailments that affect people in real ways. But at a gut level I still kind of think that allergy sufferers are all malingering attention seekers. So yes, from me at least, allergy sufferers get less sympathy than they deserve.

When my allergies went away, I got fatter. Life is full of trade-offs.

I am an allergy sufferer. I feel I deserve more sympathy in general, but not for my allergies, just generally. This may not answer your question.

I'm interested that you say it's actually other people with allergies that you find are sceptics? Or did I misunderstand this? I'm an allergic asthmatic, but on the whole to things I can easily avoid: horses, for example (never take a job as a gaucho), and cat-dog combo (T's kitten was knocked from a third floor window by the curtains, and was so offended it moved in the the gay couple on the ground floor: I am not allergic to the ridiculous dog Nacho, who abides), and tartrazine (never drink anything yellow).

The kitten turned into some kind of Rachman-style landlord?

Have you not heard of Nicholas van Hoogkitten?

The one and only Sheriff Catman. (that was specially for Pete)

It was a stupid typo. It should have been "non-allergic types." Sorry for the mix up. Posting first thing in the morning, or before I go to bed is generally a mistake.

dude that was a perfect opportunity to blame the allergies

Josh (Josh), Friday, 23 August 2002 14:21 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm astonished anyone who doesn't suffer from allergies could think of sufferers as malingerers. The streaming eyes, red nose, tight throat, blotches, rashes, swellings, sneezes and such are pretty obvious to the naked eye, and while the inner knackeredness or discomfort might not be so easily transmittable, it's pretty hard to argue with the symptoms.

Show me a skeptic and I'll kick his arse.

blow snot on him, it would be more perspicuous

The thing is, I don't have many visible symptoms. Thanks to a combination of desensitization therapy (which I've been getting more on than off since I was about five years old), an antihystamine, a decongestant, a mucous thinner, a cortisone nasal spray, and nasal irrigation, I have managed to get rid of most of the symptoms, except for a tendency toward congestion and mild sinus discomfort for at least three quarters of the year, and extreme exhaustion during certain peaks in my allergy seasons. But if I let any aspect of this treatment program slide, I notice it.

ten years pass...

I've just watched a 2 and a half hour film (The Master, if you must know) in the company of two furry bags of poison and I tell you it's like having my brain replaced by a frustrated mollusc who keeps trying to dig itself out via my eyes and nose.
