paraphrase of a quote i read in an interview with gary snyder, which he attributed to someone whose name i can't remember. agree/disagree? or is everything too precious?

That's a genuinely appalling quote. "Worth doing poorly"?

"Well, that was worth it. I have gained great satisfaction out of doing a completely cack handed job"

Hmm

well, i have more respect for people that do things poorly than i do for people who do nothing because they fear it won't be good enough. sadly, i tend towards the latter. HOWEVER, this only holds in situations where DOING is not detrimental to something or someone. what i mean is that i'm generally not in favor of CRAP. you should make one good thing rather than 1000 crap things. oh, fek, i fear i'm not making sense.

this world is so filled with garbage from people manufacturing crappy crap in the name of CHEAP. OK, what i first said goes for arts and such, the second goes for general principle of living, outside of creativity. or something.

but you shouldn't aim low on purpose!

here's a quote from one of my favorite movies, actually i can't remember if it was Driver 23 or The Atlas Moth. Dan Cleveland is a musician, trying to get his career off the ground. These are documentaries about his struggles etc. At one point he says something to the effect of "I've been at this so long, I'm not going to let something like not having enough talent, not being good enough - I'm not going to let that stop me!" and, see, i respect him greatly for this attitude.

"If there's a task that must be done,

Don't turn your tail and run,

Don't pout, don't sob,

Just do a half-assed job!"

'If a thing is worth doing, it's worth paying someone else to do it.'

Hmmm, maybe that should be on the 'Use Other Facts' thread.

DAMNIT, beaten to the Sherry Bobbins quote...foiled again!

petra jane (petra jane), Friday, 23 August 2002 09:56 (twenty-three years ago)

I think it was Chesterton who said that. No idea what it really means.

Once I got a Salada tea bag that said "If you don't try you can't fail." A sarcastic tea bag!

felicity (felicity), Friday, 23 August 2002 11:28 (twenty-three years ago)

I had a junior school teacher who used to always tell us "there's no such word as can't". *shiver*

jel -- (jel), Friday, 23 August 2002 16:20 (twenty-three years ago)

jel, your teacher sounds like a cun't.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 23 August 2002 16:26 (twenty-three years ago)

yeah, and it was usually when you were half way up a climbing frame and the whole pointlessness of climbing frames hit you and you'd say "I can't go any further", when what you meant is "I won't get any further coz this is stupid" (but of course you can't say that! ha)

jel -- (jel), Friday, 23 August 2002 16:31 (twenty-three years ago)

i think the idea was that sometimes it's better to do things and not worry about the outcome. on long exams, i erase too much and end up not having enough time.

youn, Friday, 23 August 2002 16:37 (twenty-three years ago)

five years pass...

There are probably a lot of things which, if done poorly, would make things worse.

I suppose cooking could be an example. If you make something really badly then you give yourself a bad time trying to eat it, and you also waste valuable ingredients.

I have read William Burroughs saying this, or a paraphrase therof.

"If a thing's worth doing, it's worth doin' badly baby"

Trayce, Tuesday, 18 March 2008 10:44 (eighteen years ago)

didn't Burroughs say something to the order of "if you can't raise the quality of the product, lower the quality of the consumer"

hate this attitude particularly when applied to nonessential activity

So I am guessing you won't be a big fan of The Turner Prize?

calzino, Monday, 8 May 2017 15:58 (nine years ago)

Maybe it's something for artists to tell themselves in order to get past initial fear of failure or mediocrity. I know that's for myself I've made a bunch of failed attempts to even finish writing a single song and have been left with many many fragments due to my inability to accept less than great, even though I'll probably never even get to pretty good if I don't let myself finish some lousy ones.

the last famous person you were surprised to discover was actually (man alive), Monday, 8 May 2017 16:37 (nine years ago)

I used to be like that, but, fuck it, life's too short - churn the stuff out, good, bad and indifferent.

Punnet of the Grapes (Tom D.), Monday, 8 May 2017 16:51 (nine years ago)

"I've been at this so long, I'm not going to let something like not having enough talent, not being good enough - I'm not going to let that stop me!"

If pursuing his music gives him satisfaction, even though he hasn't much talent for it, I think it's fine that he pursues it as a pastime.

otoh, his expecting anyone else to pay him, praise him, listen to him, or actively encourage him to pursue his music in any way, even though he hasn't much talent, just makes him a whiney pain in the ass to the people he keeps bugging to support his 'musical career' and they are permitted to beat him about the face and head with an open hand.
