James Joseph "Whitey" Bulger, Jr. (born September 3, 1929) was the leader of the Winter Hill Gang, a group of local criminals based in South Boston, Massachusetts. He served as an informant for the Federal Bureau of Investigation in a controversial arrangement that allowed him to continue with his criminal activities. The disclosure in 1997 by the Boston Globe of the involvement of federal agents with Bulger brought great embarassment to the law enforcement agency.
On August 19, 1999, Bulger became the 458th person added to the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) Ten Most Wanted Fugitives list. He was wanted for racketeering (under the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act (RICO)), 19 counts of murder, extortion, money laundering, conspiracy and narcotics distribution. On June 22, 2011, after sixteen years on the run, he was arrested at his apartment in Santa Monica, California, along with his girlfriend Catherine Greig. He was 81 years old at the time of his arrest, and in apparent poor health. [1][2][3]

LOL digby: In all seriousness, it is terribly ironic that Bulger was referenced by the Pakistanis as evidence that it's entirely possible for a notorious criminal to hide in plain sight and, lo and behold, it turns out he was doing just that.

One family has a lot of money, the other family doesn’t. But you know what? We’re very similar. Our fathers were murdered because the FBI protected Whitey Bulger. David Wheeler is like me and my brothers. He grew up without a dad because the FBI protected a murdering scumbag like Whitey Bulger. I started the "Black Mass" book when the trial was on...and only recently picked it up again.
Searching for gangster movies, I found this doc, which is one of the best tv crime shows I've seen.
It had stuff in it I didn't know...like thwarted shipments to the IRA (stupid!)...shocked at the amount of violence, and in such "entertaining" fashion - public killings, a house full of decomposing bodies....MUST SEE TV.
What is this? "I'm so pretty I can get away with this shit"???
Fascinating stuff! Read the book too!

Saw the Joe Berlinger documentary tonight. Very dense, not what I expected--I thought it would be Bulger's story, which I know next to nothing about, but there's about five minutes of that and the rest is all about the trial. (I see so many books about Bulger in True Crime sections, maybe they just assume everyone knows his story.) It became obvious pretty quickly that The Departed, even though it's a remake of a Hong Kong film, took a lot from Bulger's story. Anyway, okay, but for me never especially compelling.
