I follow the daily updates of a charity lottery where they draw and post daily winners (we got an entry as a gift) and the odds are like 1000 to one of winning, yet people, like hordes and hordes of people, post complaints on every single announcement about how their town is being deliberately missed/ their turn should have come up by now etc... it's rather awful.

I cannot believe how many white people are willing to alienate very large groups by flooding those groups with racist posts! I mean flooding community groups with references to "welfare queens" and implying that black people don't hold jobs or own their own property.

How dumb is this when all it takes are one or two racist posts to drive away anyone sensitive to diversity (whether they are black or not).

Obvious schadenfreude, but I'm greatly enjoying watching FB's post-IPO stock tank like a brick-filled Titanic.

Someone on the news was comparing it to Amazon's initial stock plunge, and my initial thought was, "But...Amazon provides a service. Of course they bounced back." Which is basically when I realized that I don't know what Facebook does that would ever make me comfortable buying their stock (not to mention that I still believe that they're one well-marketed and mildly-superior alternative away from a slow collapse).

yeah tbh I was thinking that the other day when reading an article about how the tax office/govt here are a little narked at how companies like FB and Google avoid paying much tax in this country despite raking in billions.

It made me wonder, wheres all the money COME from? Is it purely ad revenue? I mean, mo one pays attention to internet ads and most people even block them. How in the hell is that makeing these companies so much money?

yeah i honestly can't make any sense of it either trayce. have you ever e.g. clicked a youtube enbed video ad out of anything other than accident? is it just one of these huge global financial lies? i mean, i know it sounds crazy but the crazy makes more sense.

lol do you not realise how many useless-at-the-internet people are on fb?! my mum is forever clicking on dodgy stuff, she's a prime example of the kinds of people who click on those ads all the time.

I think the *theory* behind Facebook's growth potential is this (I think somewhat nebulous) idea that facebook is taking over the internet, that everyone is going to be using facebook to log into everything and then be tracked by facebook who will have all kind of super personalized data on how to better market to them, and then it's that meme where step two is question marks and step three is PROFIT

Yeah, basically. Except for that thing where Facebook is kinda bad at Facebook (shit is just consistently broken) and the idea of it expanding is laughable and no one with any sense is ever gonna trust Facebook with any more of their e-life than what they already have their grubby paws on.
