i'm going out to dinner this eve on charterhouse st and i'm looking for a pub beforehand and (maybe) afterwards, so i could do with one that won't be horribly busy at 6pm on a friday. any suggestions? fancyapint.com seems keen on the Fox & Anchor although this may be for their food by the looks of things...

Betsey Trotwood on Farringdon Road is like ghost town since the new Wetherspoons (evil! steeler of bags!) opened. Still bravely playing the latest pop choons all the same..

the jerusalem tavern in clerkenwell (SHH KEEP IT A SECRET) is v nice and has barrels! of beer! behind the bar and some lovely organic beers - a bit full of meeeeeedja types when we went in there tho. and DON'T lean against the railings outside - they're covered in anti climb paint which rubs off all over you.

The Jerusalem is nice but has always been completely jampacked after work whenever I've been, and particularly on a Friday. It tends to be a little emptier after 8 or so. Also their beer is loopyjuice, danger now.

Last time I went past the Fox & Anchor it was closed for a refurb, but that was several weeks ago now so I imagine it will be open again. From the outside it looked amazing and I keep meaning to go back.

The full pub is an occupational hazard of the area. I went to the Barley Mow (Smithfield end of Long Lane) a few Fridays back and that was decidedly empty, and (whilst not brilliant) acceptable enough. Try the Hope, too. I like that place a lot.

It's summer, everywhere around here's a little quieter than usual.

Yes I'm gearing up for another pitched battle with Tadcaster's finest, not to mention the product of that other Eden, Aying.
