at some point i inherited these from my mother. i almost want to buy a vcr just to watch the 120 minutes episode and the nkotb special. not the complete set of tapes, because i know damn well i taped robocop, a bunch of old ninja turtles episodes, and a public enemy "rockumentary" at some point between the years 1990 and 1996.

Kind of want to vote for the Hulkington family home movies, 1988 to 1994. I heard '92 was a high point.

jon /via/ chi 2.0, Tuesday, 5 July 2011 03:33 (thirteen years ago)

'90 was when my mom fell in with the dziga vertov people. avoid.

you're asking me to choose between your graduation ceremony, the thing, and close encounters of the third kind? these kind of choices make a man go mad.

i think the 120 minutes episode was hosted by henry rollins if that sways anybody's vote

God, I have so many home-taped VHSs--a quick estimate would be 160 tapes, with an average of three-plus movies each = 500 films. I used them a lot at school for showing specific clips, till they finally gave us YouTube access a year ago; I still watch one myself occasionally.

I'd need to know if your high-school graduation involved pig's blood and/or Spicoli singing "Wooly Bully" to be sure, but the best is probably Close Encounters or The Manchurian Candidate or Bringing Up Baby or The Lady Eve. I'll vote for The Verdict, though, the one I've seen the most. It's heavy-handed at times, especially Newman's summation, but I watch it at least once a year anyway.

clemenza, Tuesday, 5 July 2011 08:04 (thirteen years ago)

VHS was a fun format, you could tell when a movie was loved just by how awful the video quality was. I recall one terribly worn out copy of Short Circuit I had taped off of TV. I think I still have that stupid thing, too.

pretty similar to my own set of taped-from-tv vhs cassettes, right down to the 'old 120 minutes episode.' though i think mine featured JULIANA HATFIELD.

i voted for 'great pumpkin.'

(The Other) J.D. (J.D.), Wednesday, 6 July 2011 06:02 (thirteen years ago)

your family has pretty good taste in what they chose to tape. my family's equivalent would be 1990s now-forgotten blockbusters, John Wayne movies (some good, some not-so-good lol Dad) plus 1990s kiddie-oriented stuff like xuxa and barney (my youngest sister was 7 at the beginning of the 1990s).

i think i picked to kill a mockingbird.

I love it. I guess it's sort of patchy but when it's funny it's REALLY funny. "Oh I hated the colonel with his wee beady eyes and that smug look on his face" etc. Also, I used to know the kid who played Heed.

\(^o\) (/o^)/ (ENBB), Wednesday, 6 July 2011 13:16 (thirteen years ago)

that said, the parents have a decent selection of John Ford movies (mainly b/c of the John Wayne collection, plus Dad also likes Henry Fonda). it is odd to see a tape of the man who shot liberty valance sitting alongside another tape of patriot games, though.

one could write an entire academic treatise on Pauly Shore during the 1990s vs. Carrot Top during the 2000s and what the popularity of each during those time periods said about the country-at-large.

dunno if this is a DEFINITIVE answer, but this is from the wikipedia page for the show:

Mohammed is the lead singer and songwriter for Midnight Voices, a band well known throughout the San Francisco Bay area, though he supports himself doing makeovers at The Body Shop and working at his father's dance club, The Upper Room, where he occasionally reads poetry.[17]
