We really need to have one! Who is up for one in September? What dates are good?

rosemary (rosemary), Friday, 23 August 2002 22:24 (twenty-three years ago)

me me!

uh, lots of nights are bad for me but i don't have my calendar in front of me

maura (maura), Friday, 23 August 2002 23:12 (twenty-three years ago)

I was make a naughty joke about "fapping" but feh, I can barely keep the saliva in my mouth, much less be witty.

Anyway, I'm game.

Michael Daddino, Friday, 23 August 2002 23:19 (twenty-three years ago)

would you do one in october too, when i am in town, somewhere between the 15th-19th? i would like that

gareth (gareth), Friday, 23 August 2002 23:28 (twenty-three years ago)

Me! Anytime. Yes, let's plan on a mid-October one at the same time.

felicity (felicity), Saturday, 24 August 2002 00:09 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh yes, an October one is definitely needed, but I would like one before as well.

Okay, do we want an after work meet or a weekend one?

rosemary (rosemary), Saturday, 24 August 2002 00:17 (twenty-three years ago)

I think a weekend get-together would be best for those of us that don't live in NYC, but wanna get together & schmooze. Of course, I think that contingent consists of me, me, and yrs truly.

But, yeah, I'm gamer.

David R. (popshots75`), Saturday, 24 August 2002 01:06 (twenty-three years ago)

It's possible that I could make it up to NYC for a weekend FAP, so add me to that contingent.

j.lu (j.lu), Saturday, 24 August 2002 01:15 (twenty-three years ago)

Maybe me if I don't run out of rent money and have to trek back to St. Lou.

bnw (bnw), Saturday, 24 August 2002 04:19 (twenty-three years ago)

i'm down. i'll be out of town from sept 13-15 but most other nights should work.

geeta (geeta), Saturday, 24 August 2002 17:34 (twenty-three years ago)

ok, so that leaves the weekends of September 7/8, 21/22, and 28/29. Why don't the out of towners weigh in with their preferences and pick one of those? Maybe we'd better do it sooner before bnw spends his rent money.

Otherwise, you can just come here and look for rosemary and me passed out in a gutter on any given night.

felicity (felicity), Sunday, 25 August 2002 17:04 (twenty-three years ago)

rosemary, maybe we should get some the pinefox T-shirts so they can recognize us.

felicity (felicity), Sunday, 25 August 2002 17:06 (twenty-three years ago)

Otherwise, you can just come here and look for rosemary and me passed out in a gutter on any given night.

Well jeez, NOW you tell us.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 25 August 2002 18:00 (twenty-three years ago)

felicity, ha ha ha ha.

I think the evening of the 21st might not be so hot for me, but whatever.

rosemary (rosemary), Sunday, 25 August 2002 18:35 (twenty-three years ago)

Cool--I'd like to do this. So far, any of those dates are ok for me...

Mary (Mary), Monday, 26 August 2002 00:33 (twenty-three years ago)

fyi, there is a benefit for wfmu at southpaw in brooklyn on the 21st ... esg is playing!

maura (maura), Monday, 26 August 2002 13:35 (twenty-three years ago)

Heh heh maura, why do you think the 21st is bad for me?

Unless we'd all like to go together!

rosemary (rosemary), Monday, 26 August 2002 13:49 (twenty-three years ago)

lest you forget maura, the wprb show is also on the 21st, or have you forgotten yr loyalties already?!?

...although it's in the early afternoon, so a meet-up in the evening might be doable.

Dave M. (rotten03), Monday, 26 August 2002 15:36 (twenty-three years ago)

i was actually thinking a week ago or so that ESG would be a good ... hmm... i was about to say "fancy a pint" but WTF people? this is New York! this is not for fancy people! it's "Want a Beer"!! WAB!!!

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Monday, 26 August 2002 16:11 (twenty-three years ago)

So THAT'S what FAP means! Hot damn! Now I can get back to work!

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 26 August 2002 16:22 (twenty-three years ago)

dave i'm gonna try and make both! hopefully this time i won't get hit in the head by an acorn.

maura (maura), Monday, 26 August 2002 16:58 (twenty-three years ago)

i will bring you a hat.

btw, in canada, it's 'HASE', as in 'Have A Stubbie, Eh?'

Dave M. (rotten03), Monday, 26 August 2002 17:19 (twenty-three years ago)

Ok, September 21 sounds a little too controversial, so let's ask j.lu, dave raposa, maura, bnw and anyone else coming from out of town which they prefer: September 7 or September 28 . . .

Although I'm tempted to propose a Labor Day extravaganza where we watch the Red Sox v. Yankees in a bar on Monday and got to the Interpol show on September 3!

felicity (felicity), Monday, 26 August 2002 20:23 (twenty-three years ago)

What's WPRB?

Mary (Mary), Monday, 26 August 2002 22:42 (twenty-three years ago)

I'll be on the Outer Banks all of Labor Day week, so Sept. 7 wouldn't work for me.

j.lu (j.lu), Monday, 26 August 2002 23:01 (twenty-three years ago)

I believe we have critical mass for a September 21 meet-up before the WFMU benefit. Then, we will can reconvene in Mid-October to entertain gareth and alan t when they come here.

I could possibly accommodate someone who needs a place to stay on Sept. 21, so please email me.

felicity (felicity), Tuesday, 27 August 2002 00:50 (twenty-three years ago)

The Styrenes are playing the FMU show, too. "Jaguar Ride"!

I fancy a Bloody Mary from O'Connors. Or we could go to Jackies Fifth Amendment.

Benjamin, Tuesday, 27 August 2002 19:34 (twenty-three years ago)

My sources say that tickets will be sold at Other Music.

It's within walking distance of Chip Shop, isn't it? Mushy peas, num num.

rosemary (rosemary), Tuesday, 27 August 2002 23:01 (twenty-three years ago)

Well????

(felicity, they hate us.)

rosemary (rosemary), Thursday, 29 August 2002 13:23 (twenty-three years ago)

Ben that is a FANTASTIC domain name.

I have been making Bloody Marys recently. COR they are SUBSTANTIAL!

Sarah (starry), Thursday, 29 August 2002 13:27 (twenty-three years ago)

Bloody Marys are useful tipples. Consume with vigor.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 29 August 2002 13:31 (twenty-three years ago)

"fancy a BM" doesn't quite ring right tho.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Thursday, 29 August 2002 13:39 (twenty-three years ago)

But they have tomato juice! Icky.

rosemary (rosemary), Thursday, 29 August 2002 13:46 (twenty-three years ago)

No no, yummy!! I am amazed at how when I am out and about I can drink pitchers full of Bloody Marys but at home I can only just drink a glass! Mmmmm bluddy marys. BLUD BLUD BLUD.

Sarah (starry), Thursday, 29 August 2002 13:51 (twenty-three years ago)

But they have tomato juice! Icky.

You are confusing the joys of Bloody Marys with the horror that is Clamato.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 29 August 2002 13:58 (twenty-three years ago)

Clamato bloody marys are the PITS, if I'd wanted drinkable shrimp cocktail I'd have just gagged myself from the get and saved $5. gross! O'Connor's bloody marys are superb, at least if you order them during daylight hours when the old man is working there. He takes great pride in them - his exact shaking technique is a SECRET - he turns his BACK to you when he does it!

(ulterior motive: talk up O'Connor's as it is 2 blocks from my house)

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Thursday, 29 August 2002 14:27 (twenty-three years ago)

(Sarah, shh, it's from a John Berryman POME!)

In fact, that chip shop will deliver to O'Connors.

There's also a new bar that opened next to my house last night. In an old soda shop. It's called Soda. Colorless, Smith Streety sort of place, with terrible music.

Benjamin, Thursday, 29 August 2002 16:38 (twenty-three years ago)

count me in.

M Matos (M Matos), Thursday, 29 August 2002 20:37 (twenty-three years ago)

Now I want fish and chips (and pie and mushy peas and curry sauce).

So, O'Connors, then Southpaw on the 21st?

Ned, there is no joy in tomato juice.

rosemary (rosemary), Thursday, 29 August 2002 20:44 (twenty-three years ago)

I would stop by again for this one, but I probably won't be anywhere near NY then. Wah!

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Thursday, 29 August 2002 22:44 (twenty-three years ago)

I like Bloody Mary's and have never been to O'Connors--so, yes!

Mary (Mary), Friday, 30 August 2002 03:06 (twenty-three years ago)

i want you all to promise not to bloody mary

boxcubed (boxcubed), Friday, 30 August 2002 03:23 (twenty-three years ago)

I LOVE fish & chips

M Matos (M Matos), Friday, 30 August 2002 11:17 (twenty-three years ago)

Cor, that chip shop sells Speckled Hen, nummy! And they have gravy = it is civilised.

Deep fried TWINKIE?!? ----------------------------!!!!

Sarah (starry), Friday, 30 August 2002 11:27 (twenty-three years ago)

Yay, M. Matos is in. Sounds like we have a good plan -- now all we need is a time to meet at O'Connor's that will give us plenty of time to have our fried foods delivered before the show. What time does the WFMU thing start? Do we want a lazy-afternoon-type booze-up thing where people can stop by or peel off or whatever?

felicity (felicity), Friday, 30 August 2002 14:41 (twenty-three years ago)

I think O'Connor's/ Chip Shop should be an afternoon thing, and people could stop by whenever they can. Then those who are going to the concert can all go together later.

rosemary (rosemary), Friday, 30 August 2002 14:49 (twenty-three years ago)

the plans as they stand so far sound fine to me.

hey, are any of you nyc ilxers going to the nina hagen/ari up show on sunday (sept 8)? i will be there!! that is reason enuff to go!! uh yeah!! ph34r m3!! anyway if any of you all are going too, lemme know and we should go drink before the show n stuff.

geeta (geeta), Friday, 30 August 2002 18:48 (twenty-three years ago)

Hey Geeta,

I don't think I will be venturing to Webster Hall, but I was thinking of going to the Hagan Shiva night at the Slipper Room on Orchard St.--it's Sept. 5 & 6--I'll probably go on the 5th. Let me know if you''re into attending this Hagan show too--

Mary (Mary), Friday, 30 August 2002 22:38 (twenty-three years ago)

B-but for those of us who don't live in Brooklyn and want to attend both Fish & Chips and WFMU benefit, maybe is better to coordinately those two activities--

Mary (Mary), Friday, 30 August 2002 22:41 (twenty-three years ago)

the slipper room rulez! yeah, i might be down. send me an email.

geeta (geeta), Friday, 30 August 2002 23:02 (twenty-three years ago)

(I guess I picked a good time to leave Park Slope as the F sucks compared to the D for those going to Flatbush Ave. I don't live in NYC anymore so I am posting purely out of jealousy! ;-) I hope everyone has a good time at der bar!)

Aaron Grossman (aajjgg), Wednesday, 4 September 2002 03:25 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah, I used to live in Fort Greene so always took the D over the Manhattan Bridge...It sucks that it is out of service. My friend said that it is taking them longer to repair the Manhattan Bridge than it did to build it.

Mary (Mary), Wednesday, 4 September 2002 23:10 (twenty-three years ago)

Aaron the F STILL sucks for going to Flatbush. it's all about the Q and the W now.... which are cool but nowhere as SNEAKY as the B and the D were....

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Thursday, 5 September 2002 00:04 (twenty-three years ago)

Besides the time issue, I would always run into annoying characters on the F, like those motherfuckers who thought they were so funny blocking the doors at 4am when everyone was ready to sleep. The D was always professional.

Aaron Grossman (aajjgg), Thursday, 5 September 2002 01:37 (twenty-three years ago)

hey I live near O'Connors & SouthPaw, but how we supposed to take this FAP seriously
when the greBtest event in music history! is taking place same time in NYC:

TOKION MAGAZINE AND SOUNDLAB PRESENT SOUND CLASH: FREE CONCERT AT THE EAST RIVER PARK AMPITHEATRE ON SEPTEMBER 21ST 2pm-6pm

Press contact: Adam Glickman/Ken Miller 212-358-9965 / letters@kneehigh.com

Tokion Magazine celebrates the 50th Anniversary of the Jamaican soundsystem with the "Sound Clash" project. The project explores how the early Jamaican sound systems created a musical renaissance from which all elements of Hip Hop and DJ culture can directly trace their roots.

Sound Clash launches with a free concert on September 21st at the East River Park Amphitheater (immortalized as the location for the finale in the hip-hop classic Wild Style*). The event Master of Ceremonies will be Talib Kweli from New York hip-hop outfit Black Star. There will be performances by legends U-Roy, commonly regarded as the father of dancehall music and the first person ever to rap (or toast) over a record, and Kool Herc, the father of hip-hop and the first person ever to use two turntables to produce an extended break-beat. One of the highlights of the show will be a sound clash (or DJ battle) between two legendary sound systems: Sir Coxsone¹s Downbeat
and King Jammy¹s Super Sound. As founder of Studio One (the label that gave the world Bob Marley, the Skatelites, and Jackie Mittoo), and Jamaica¹s most successful soundsystem from the Œ50s, Coxsone Dodd is credited with creating Ska music. The younger King Jammy, on the other hand, was a disciple of King Tubby, founder of Dub music and engineer for Dodd¹s classic rival Duke Reid. In the '80s King Jammy would go on to form one of Jamaica's most successful studios, and in direct contrast to Studio One, would bring computer technology to reggae, giving rise to the Dancehall style.

The "Sound Clash" project continues as a special feature in the November issue of Tokion, a 30-minute documentary to be released in December, and a limited edition red, yellow, and green Tokion/Nike shoe that will surely be snatched up by true fans and supporters of this movement (gag!). Enthusiasm for the project is quickly spreading through New York as well as Kingston where plans are already under way for a much larger concert to take place this winter.

Location: East River Park Amphitheater South of Grand Street and East of the FDR.

Paul (scifisoul), Sunday, 8 September 2002 16:08 (twenty-three years ago)

doors for SouthPaw/ESG aren't til 7:30 so I guess 5pm - 8pm at O'Connors still works out OK.

someone -w- skills please post the SoundClass flyer here (so much better than text above)

Paul (scifisoul), Sunday, 8 September 2002 16:17 (twenty-three years ago)

http://www.tokionusa.com/site/index.html

thanks to Andy Battaglia for the tipoff

Paul (scifisoul), Sunday, 8 September 2002 16:21 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh no!! Maybe we need to meet en masse at the East River Park for an infusion of Jamaican dub, then travel across the river to O'Connors then fish & chips then ESG to make it the greatest ILM meet evah!

Mary (Mary), Sunday, 8 September 2002 21:06 (twenty-three years ago)

Hmmm, so who's going where and when?

Outdoor concerts make me ill, so it's just O'Connor's and Southpaw for me.

rosemary (rosemary), Tuesday, 17 September 2002 01:47 (twenty-three years ago)

Yo. I have no plans on attending any of the concerting shenanigans, but I'm game for escaping CT for a little non-keyboard interacting and consumption. Please post/repost any & all plans (including alternate plans, fake plans, codewords, fake codewords, and diagrams with little Billy Keane jumping over fences and playing with dogs).

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 17 September 2002 04:10 (twenty-three years ago)

Josh (Josh), Tuesday, 17 September 2002 17:28 (twenty-three years ago)

has everyone who's going to SouthPaw bought tickets online yet?
be surprised if it doesn't sell out

I'm up for all 3 - outdoor soundclash (weather permitting?), O'Connors (great local dive bar) and ESG @ SouthPaw

Paul (scifisoul), Tuesday, 17 September 2002 17:42 (twenty-three years ago)

Tickets are sold out at Other Music, and as of yesterday there were some tickets left at Ticketweb.

rosemary (rosemary), Tuesday, 17 September 2002 21:05 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh no! I just had to buy tickets online cause of the OM sell out... I'll be at O'Connor's between 5 & 6.

If anyone would like to meet in NY for the Tokion-sponsored gig, then travel together to Brooklyn, e-mail me...

Mary (Mary), Wednesday, 18 September 2002 00:02 (twenty-three years ago)

I may be going to that but not sure.... will deffo be @ O'Connor's however.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Thursday, 19 September 2002 03:21 (twenty-three years ago)

Just saw this thread. I might drop by O'Connors... I live nearby. 5 is the time, yes?

Yancey (ystrickler), Friday, 20 September 2002 15:02 (twenty-three years ago)

so bitter that i can't join you. get drunk for me.

Dave M. (rotten03), Friday, 20 September 2002 16:28 (twenty-three years ago)

Okay shall we meet at O'Connors from 4 to 7ish? Like what felicity said? I will be going to the concert at 7:30, don't know about the rest of you.

For all the new people I have never met, I will be the brunette girl in glasses and pink sneakers (and jeans and a shirt).

rosemary (rosemary), Saturday, 21 September 2002 01:56 (twenty-three years ago)

I won't be there, kids. Yeah, I'm bummed. Stupid homework. If you're drinking something sweet & wimpy, think of me.

David R. (popshots75`), Saturday, 21 September 2002 04:27 (twenty-three years ago)

Homework is a pretty lame excuse, Dave "mofo" Popshots.

bnw (bnw), Saturday, 21 September 2002 06:39 (twenty-three years ago)

Do your homework in the bar!

rosemary (rosemary), Saturday, 21 September 2002 14:48 (twenty-three years ago)

yeah cmon dave I bet everyone can help you finish it real quicklike even

Josh (Josh), Saturday, 21 September 2002 14:53 (twenty-three years ago)

"Do my homework in the bar." I can barely muster enough self-control to get my homework done @ home! You crazy kids.

Speaking of work - back I go. Regale me w/ stories of ILX goodness, if you'd like.

David R. (popshots75`), Sunday, 22 September 2002 13:29 (twenty-three years ago)

we did your homework for you anyway. geeta and M. Matos had some whiskey sours on your behalf and a good time was had by all. More on this later.

felicity (felicity), Sunday, 22 September 2002 15:29 (twenty-three years ago)

That was fun! I can't wait for October!

ESG and Outhud were rilly rilly good. And Maura and I know all the same people, it makes my head HURT.

rosemary (rosemary), Sunday, 22 September 2002 16:46 (twenty-three years ago)

1) We invented the ILX drinking game (as if we needed one)
2) Mary had a cathartic moment where she called P Diddy "commercial"
3) Ben watched his beloved MetroStars get ruthlessly eliminated from any further competition this season
4) Andy let us know that the SoundClash did not come off very well
5) Rosemary skedaddled to ESG quicklike while geeta and Mary wisely took advantage of the cheapo drinks at O'Connors
6) chips were ordered!! with vinegar etc!!!! they were delish, especially with the curry sauce, and fortified us for several more rounds.
7) it was good to see peeps - Michelangelo, Paul, bnw, especially the new (for me) faces - Mary, Felicity Redwell....

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Sunday, 22 September 2002 18:44 (twenty-three years ago)

I learned from Tracer and Matos about the inimitable value of the new Streets record...my curiosity is piqued...though as such gentleman also endorse a certain wily American wannabe rapper, I'm not sure if I can trust their judgment...

While I went into Southpaw with Paul and his lovely (non-poster) wife, geeta and Matos absconded "to play video games" but returned much fortified with the eating of Mexican food, wtf??

ESG's super bass heavy sound was off the hook! If I closed my eyes I could pretend I was at a house party in the Bronx circa '80s, but when I opened them I realized I was in a sea of musically correct FMU listeners...

While ESG wasn't playing, the real party was outside Southpaw on the street; the more social of the ILM posters seemed to know everyone out there...

After leading Matos to the out of service F train, we shared a surprisingly expensive though scenic cab ride home together, in which topics discussed included Greil Marcus's wonderful essays for Interview magazine...

The spirit of ILM lives beyond the internet... It was great to be meet one and all--and to see geeta again--I look forward to future "FAP"s...

Mary (Mary), Sunday, 22 September 2002 19:34 (twenty-three years ago)

tell more about ESG!!

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Sunday, 22 September 2002 20:02 (twenty-three years ago)

ESG = Emerald Sapphire and Gold

Mary (Mary), Sunday, 22 September 2002 20:07 (twenty-three years ago)

tell more about ESG!!

You chose not to go = YOU SUFFER. Ha.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 22 September 2002 20:21 (twenty-three years ago)

B-but Ned, many did indeed want to go, but the event was sold out...

Mary (Mary), Sunday, 22 September 2002 20:33 (twenty-three years ago)

Minor details. That's when you contact the band and urge them to play for all, to give the kids some music so they can revolt against the Man.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 22 September 2002 20:37 (twenty-three years ago)

Tracer brought up 1986 in an attempt to trash-talk the Angels. oops.

On a serious note, it was wonderful to meet everyone. Gareth/Alang/nabisoFest should be swell.

felicity (felicity), Sunday, 22 September 2002 20:37 (twenty-three years ago)

*quietly hopeful voice* Bostonfest too, yes?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 22 September 2002 20:38 (twenty-three years ago)

it is a metaphysical certainty that Bostonfest will be swell, with or without [ :( ] me

felicity (felicity), Sunday, 22 September 2002 20:45 (twenty-three years ago)

But it must be with or I'll weep! As I have a tendency to do anyway.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 22 September 2002 20:47 (twenty-three years ago)

I think I'm going to go to Boston just to see everyone = T-stalk is sold out but I got peeps to see in that town anyway = I wanna hook up with the ILX Krew = details to come = see y'all at Gareth/Alan G/Nabiscofest also

M Matos (M Matos), Sunday, 22 September 2002 21:26 (twenty-three years ago)

Yay! Goodness shall be Had.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 22 September 2002 21:34 (twenty-three years ago)

those were some good times. the NYC ilxers are awesome. we need to drink together more often. (and yo daver, if you ever need someone to drink whiskey sours for you in your absence, i'm happy to oblige.)

also ESG was the bomb (tracer you shoulda been there, man!)

geeta (geeta), Sunday, 22 September 2002 21:56 (twenty-three years ago)

WHISKEY sours? Man, I was thinking of AMARETTO sours! You cats are way too harDCore for my tender vittles.

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 23 September 2002 04:21 (twenty-three years ago)

hey it was awesome to run into all of you at esg!!

maura (maura), Monday, 23 September 2002 16:09 (twenty-three years ago)

Emerald Sapphire Gold.... you know I don't like that bling bling stuff

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Monday, 23 September 2002 16:41 (twenty-three years ago)

most fun FAP I've been to so far - great meeting all the friendly ilXors! (Mary - thanks for biggin' up Tracy)
Gareth & anyone else who'll be here, keep us posted on October visit. Autumn's best time to visit NY.

ESG are amazing & joyous! if you get a chance, go see 'em

Andy & Michaelangelo left the SoundClash ('Sound Class') early, so they must have missed King Jammy's system rockin' it! among many, standout track for me was Shabba - "Love Punanny Bad". U-Roy great too! outdoor concert in the sun & shade along breezy East River with this selection of music = pure niceness

Paul (scifisoul), Monday, 23 September 2002 17:20 (twenty-three years ago)

one year passes...
I'm heading back to Southpaw tonight. Any recs for a before-hand bar/restaurant on 5th ave? O'Connors was great -- did they serve the fish and chips or were they ordered from elsewhere? How is the Lighthouse?

Mary (Mary), Saturday, 6 March 2004 19:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Is this where the chips were from?

Mary (Mary), Saturday, 6 March 2004 19:45 (twenty-one years ago)
