i can't sleep

its 2.30 am, i'm at my parents, i can't sleep. it is amazing how worrying actually stops you from sleeping! i was up here 2 weeks ago, and didn't get to sleep until 7am. i'm worrying about the future, i don't think i'm making a success of living in london in the way i'd hoped. lots of things have gone wrong at the same time and i worry myself sick about how i'm going to change them. its exhausting!!! i want to go to sleep, i really do!

gareth, if yr on AIM you should come on now and we'll love you back to health.

chrisb (chrisb), Friday, 23 August 2002 23:46 (twenty-three years ago)

i'm not on AIM, and with this old computer, that is really straining under the weight of soulseek downloads aty the minute, i'm not sure i could do it anyway!

gareth (gareth), Saturday, 24 August 2002 00:10 (twenty-three years ago)

AIM is the wonderdrug

di smith (lucylurex), Saturday, 24 August 2002 02:31 (twenty-three years ago)

Gareth: worrying about what will happen is something I do at times. I'm OK for the next two years but after that I don't know really.

And not only for me but for my brother as well.

I can only hope evrything goes well for you.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Saturday, 24 August 2002 07:22 (twenty-three years ago)

my job type stuff is ok, its living situation and, to a lesser extent, personal relationships that are not right. i have tried hard, but it seems i am wanting in certain respects...

gareth (gareth), Saturday, 24 August 2002 21:03 (twenty-three years ago)

Ah, fear not Gareth...I think we've all had those moments. We'll do our best to cheer ya up if you feel a bit blase by the time of yer trip here.

I can't sleep. We are getting up in 6 hours to drive to LA and I have been burning CDs. Now my stomach hurts. I tried lying down but my brain is going at a hundred miles an hour.

I do hope you are all well.

El Tomboto, Tuesday, 25 September 2007 10:48 (eighteen years ago)

Since I'm in my last weeks of my pregnancy, I am now even more prone to sleeplessness (is that even a word?). On top of that Ophelia wakes up because of her cold. I can't look in the mirror in the mirror without nearly collapsing, I look ghastly due to sleep deprivation.

nathalie, Tuesday, 25 September 2007 11:52 (eighteen years ago)

Tracer Hand, Tuesday, 25 September 2007 11:54 (eighteen years ago)

xpost This is also a problem that arises when you're pregnant: imploding brain mass. :-(

nathalie, Tuesday, 25 September 2007 11:55 (eighteen years ago)

anatol_merklich, Tuesday, 25 September 2007 11:56 (eighteen years ago)

i was just thinking about you nathalie, wondering how you were doing. good luck with everything:)

estela, Tuesday, 25 September 2007 11:58 (eighteen years ago)

Doing okay, I guess. :-) Our colleague just delivered her baby (which was due around the same time) which resulted in a mild panic attack on my side. heh.

Xpost Fuck you! :-) Did I tell you guys I ordered 384 rolls of toilet paper? I think this baby is sucking all the brains out of my head! Thank god I could cancel the order. :-)

nathalie, Tuesday, 25 September 2007 12:00 (eighteen years ago)

Did I tell you guys I ordered 384 rolls of toilet paper?

I'm sure I'd have remembered if you had!

Why could I not sleep last night?

1. I was worried about remembering an appointment at 3 p.m. (not like I wouldn't wake up on time wtf)
2. I had Randy Newman's "Simon Smith and His Amazing Dancing Bear" in my head on repeat, and that shit is not exactly a soporific

I go through this all the time. I know it sounds like some superficial "philosophical" BS but as you get older it is harder to be as strident in your convictions because you realize there is so much more to be learned. I dunno if that helps or not.

anyways, 5am here.

btw I think it's bullshit that eligibility rolls over every year around here. I've been summoned three times in the last three years, but I was talking to a friend in Brooklyn who said they can only be summoned once every four years.

Anyway, still awake. I hope the coffee is better this year than it was last year.

three years pass...

My sleep has changed quite a bit recently: about half the week, I wake up somewhere between 4 and 6am, and my brain is just on and racing and I'm unlikely to fall back asleep (although I sometimes I don't feel as tired as I'd expect to for the rest of the day). I wonder if my in-bed screen habit is having a cumulative effect on staying asleep (falling asleep hasn't been a problem for me thankfully for quite some time). Or are my sleep needs just changing with age?

I know that the general rule of thumb is not to look at screens 1-2 hours before trying to sleep, but I've also been trying various ways of not getting up in the middle of the night to go to the bathroom, including limiting my liquid intake after 4pm, to little avail. Being on a screen keeps me stay awake a little longer so that I'm able to make one last pit stop to try to help get through the night -- which has only ~kinda~ worked, so maybe I should just scrap this strategy? IDK!

More water can also help you stay asleep (and even regain it after nocturia), not that my hydration levels are exemplary.
