kinda feel like the nature of sitcoms changes so dramatically every decade that this doesn't really work. i.e.:

50s - the foibles of suburban family life
60s - wacky 'concept' show
70s - urban realism
80s - the foibles of suburban family life
90s - smug 20-somethings hanging out and eating cereal
00s - no idea
