top-grossing LIVE ACTION original movies of the 21st century

over half the votes in the original thread top-grossing 'original' (non-sequel/remake/adaptation) movies of the 21st century went to animated flicks, and since I accidentally left out Inception and felt dumb about that, here we go with a gratuitous re-poll. it was a lot of fun the first time, might as well go for a bonus round, etc.

the last 17 options are all new additions that were not in the last poll, along with Inception and Bridesmaids, which made enough money since the last poll was started to jump onto the list

once again, no sequels or adaptations (although historical/based on a true story stuff is fine if no particular book or article was used as source material)

It's not perfect by any means, but I honestly think Inception is the most entertaining of the ones I've seen.

Inevitable stupid samba mix (chap), Sunday, 10 July 2011 00:59 (thirteen years ago)

5 Adam Sandler movies
4 Will Ferrell movies
4 Vince Vaughn movies
4 Kevin James movies (!)

Locutus of Snorg (some dude), Sunday, 10 July 2011 01:01 (thirteen years ago)

uh this is pretty hard

call all destroyer, Sunday, 10 July 2011 01:06 (thirteen years ago)

i have it down to hangover/bridemaids/wedding crashers/talladega nights. i don't think there's a drama i would consider voting for.

call all destroyer, Sunday, 10 July 2011 01:11 (thirteen years ago)

amazingly even though i've seen at least a few minutes of virtually all of these (except for the 2 most recent ones and a couple really dire-looking ones like Wild Hogs and Bringing Down The House) i'm really at a loss for a clear favorite. maybe i will struggle to come up with a POX.

Locutus of Snorg (some dude), Sunday, 10 July 2011 01:13 (thirteen years ago)

ones i have probably watched the most but don't necessarily love: Wedding Crashers, Signs, Knocked Up, Elf

watched appreciatively and chin-strokingly but have no real attachment to: Inception, Inglourious Basterds

lol i got paid to review this shit: Paul Blart: Mall Cop, Click, Four Christmases

lol i paid to see this in the theater: Avatar, My Big Fat Greek Wedding, Gladiator

so fuckin overrated/played out: The Hangover, Meet The Parents, Superbad

Locutus of Snorg (some dude), Sunday, 10 July 2011 01:23 (thirteen years ago)

Superbad is a sight better than the other movies it's been lumped with, it doesn't deserve any kind of backlash.

SB OK (Noodle Vague), Sunday, 10 July 2011 14:09 (thirteen years ago)

superbad is amazeballs

bc it's shit but also just feels kind of minor-league next to the rest imho... though i guess 'blades of glory' is in there so.

would s*m*a*s*h 1994 (history mayne), Sunday, 10 July 2011 14:54 (thirteen years ago)

i'm kind of indifferent to IB but it made a ton of money and definitely seemed v successful at the time (especially compared to most recent Best Picture nominees). MUCH more surprised to see Four Christmases or Farenheit 9/11, etc.

bro, die (some dude), Sunday, 10 July 2011 15:00 (thirteen years ago)

Went with Elf, as that's the one I've seen more than once.

this poll is a lie

☂ (max), Sunday, 10 July 2011 18:01 (thirteen years ago)

never been to disneyworld or whatever but feel that pirates of the caribbean is probably not less original than many of these movies. presumably erin brockovich is based on a non-fiction bestseller. and im sure pearl harbour was a thing.

would s*m*a*s*h 1994 (history mayne), Sunday, 10 July 2011 18:04 (thirteen years ago)

yea but the pirates of the carribean like, didn't actually happen

Neanderthal, Sunday, 10 July 2011 18:06 (thirteen years ago)

that's what im saying. it's original. these other films stole from reality.

would s*m*a*s*h 1994 (history mayne), Sunday, 10 July 2011 18:07 (thirteen years ago)

and the ride, before the movies came out, was a pretty fun family thing where you rode in a boat in the water and watched pirates pillage, burn shit, shoot cannons and chase women around, kinda creepy imo

Neanderthal, Sunday, 10 July 2011 18:07 (thirteen years ago)

the first and second half of my sentences seem to be in conflict

Neanderthal, Sunday, 10 July 2011 18:07 (thirteen years ago)

Superbad or Erin Brockovich.

The Edge of Gloryhole (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Sunday, 10 July 2011 18:11 (thirteen years ago)

Voted for Ricky Bobby.

EZ Snappin, Sunday, 10 July 2011 18:12 (thirteen years ago)

IB is a string of scenes ranging from crappy to amazing (opening scene is the best) that don't really hang together as a movie.

Inevitable stupid samba mix (chap), Sunday, 10 July 2011 20:51 (thirteen years ago)

I've seen 33 of these films.

resonate with awesomeness (jel --), Sunday, 10 July 2011 21:04 (thirteen years ago)

Tempted to vote Gladiator just to spite people because I think it's a great piece of melodramatic entertainment that gets overly hated on by people taking it too seriously. Also tempted to vote Knocked Up to spite Morbs (I did enjoy it).

Brockovich and Pearl Harbor are based on real events but there was no book or anything used as the basis for the screenplays. Pirates was an existing title/'intellectual property' even if the plot/characters were pretty much invented for the movie.

did they change the pirates of the caribbean ride at disneyland after the movies came out?

i saw aaron eckhart on letterman or something one time? maybe he was just high. he seemed sooooo actor-y, like super-hyper and nothing he was saying was making any sense. it's too bad he's not that chilled-out biker with a heart of gold in real life.

haha i know what you mean by actor-y and i hate when you find out someone you think's cool is like that

Intellectual property that should be Hollywood movies:

Funyuns
The House on the Rock
Chicago Metra
Flowbee
McGruff the Crime Dog
Winkers pants
Hot Topic
K-Mart's Mr. Bluelight
The Rio Hair Naturalizer System
Wacky Packages (esp. Drowny)
Chip Clips
Mr. Whipple
Valley of the Dolls (a film that follows the brilliant novel more closely and gives us the Showgirls-esque masterpiece we deserve)

P.S. Signs was M's worst until this Airbender shit.

P.P.S. The Break-Up is the 2nd best film on this list, Enchanted 3rd.

i bet you anchorman's dvd sales are off the charts tho

J0rdan S., Thursday, 14 July 2011 16:42 (thirteen years ago)

anchorman really ended up being a kinda cult hit, it makes sense that the movies that followed it did better in theatres

oh i guess j0rdan got there first...

A cave dool approaches! (Lamp), Thursday, 14 July 2011 16:43 (thirteen years ago)

that movie is prob the most quoted movie of the past 15 years but the thing w/ a movie like that is ppl need to see it a few times to catch all the great lines etc & also anchorman was just a huge word of mouth movie

i remember practically everyone i knew who saw it in theaters (granted we were 16 or w/e) didn't like it all + didn't really get it & then a year or so later everyone was collectively like "wtf were we thinking..."

J0rdan S., Thursday, 14 July 2011 16:44 (thirteen years ago)

aaron eckhart is neil labute's greatest creation

this list is wow bad, of the movies on it i've seen there's not one i'd call good w/o major qualification.

i'm stuck between bridesmaids and superbad, probably gonna go superbad

anchorman, that is

horseshoe, Thursday, 14 July 2011 16:46 (thirteen years ago)

A cave dool approaches! (Lamp), Thursday, 14 July 2011 16:47 (thirteen years ago)

i think im going w/ bridesmaids but superbad a strong contender

also inglorious besterds

those are probably the only 3 movies i genuinely liked on the list

maybe inception too and the bat-man movie

some dude, Friday, 15 July 2011 01:13 (thirteen years ago)

avatar's problem is that while it lived up to and imo exceeded its billing as a visual landmark, all of its pleasures were tied up in those visuals, so it has exactly zero merits as a film to re-watch at home, unless you're a billionaire w/ a 3D IMAX in your house

― J0rdan S., Thursday, July 14, 2011 12:19 PM (8 hours ago) Bookmark

imo Avatar didn't look that special, if nobody told me how much more it cost than every other sci-fi opus i never would've guessed and there were like two or three bits of imagery the entire movie that i thought were especially memorable or novel. if anything i was surprised that the plotting was at least average and it didn't totally feel like a video game cut scene.

some dude, Friday, 15 July 2011 01:16 (thirteen years ago)
