generic indie film scores

you know what I'm talking about. acoustic guitars/marimbas/pianos playing muted staccato patterns. no drums, maybe some gentle hand percussion. no synths, in fact nothing amplified or electric. things might get a little sprightly during montages, but tempos slow down if we're watching someone be sad and/or do something pathetic.

I hear this in a movie, I am prone to start hating the movie.

Didn't like 'Submarine' then?

The multi-talented F.R. David (Billy Dods), Wednesday, 13 July 2011 20:19 (thirteen years ago)

not familiar with it.

"Cyrus" was the most recent thing I saw featuring this type of score

I'm trying to find examples on youtube but the kinds of scenes that get youtube'd don't really feature this stuff. it's used in establishing shots, in montages showing people at work/around the house/driving around/doing their routines etc.

The way to fix this--and I know PTT will agree--is to hand over all indie-film soundtracks to Yo La Tengo.

Or Slayer.

are we talking about like mothersbaugh's stuff for wes anderson movies? I like that, though i guess it's been co-opted a bit to signify "indie quirk".

sufjan Stevens fits here, right? an abomination

It's better than just having a bunch of dumb indie songs from the recent past in yr movie, though

It sucks bcz on the one hand I am all for film scores breaking out from James Horner titanic generic orchestra bombast, but jeez at least have some respect for music if not your audience

wes anderson uses a ton of pop songs, other film scores, etc. whatever Mark Mothersbaugh has done for him hasn't registered with me. Sufjan Stevens sings and uses drums and electric guitars and shit, doesn't he? (Do people actually use him for film scores?)

the kind of movies that use this stuff tend to be vehicles that don't want to spend money on people like Mothersbaugh and Stevens anyway. which is why they hire some anonymous hack to pen some plaintive plucked-violin-strings pieces.

Was reznor's sndtrk for the Facebook movie indie-sounding much? I remember it being kind of nice.

re-watched Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind while I was sick this weekend and uh yeah I guess Jon Brion is to blame...? (It's a great movie, but the score is EXACTLY what I'm talking about, Beck cover tune aside)
