Are any of those really synonyms for "montage"?

omnium-gatherum for the all-win

If those words are all synonyms for "montage", I'd love to see MW's definition of "synonym"! And how could they include "stew" and "gumbo" and "salad" and "smorgasbord" but not "casserole"? And they got room for redundancies like "hodgepodge/hotchpotch" and "miscellany/miscellanea" but overlook some real heavyweights like "assemblage" and "cornucopia"?

I think "medley" is the only real synonym up there, the only one that really implies the necessary sequentialism. But if we're just voting for a favourite, then "omnium-gatherum" it is.

It could be set up like thesaurus.com, where they have subentries for similar words and all the synonyms for those too. Which can actually be useful if the initial word you looked up was imprecise and one of those entries better captures your meaning.

But of course there is the bigger question of whether it is possible to have a 'true' synonym, for every word has a differing etymology or connotation, even if only slight.

i think you're right, i'm pretty sure that's how it's set up

+ good point

Ack. Belief in perfect synonyms is naive. I once had a co-worker who'd grouse about people who'd tell him to look words up instead of "just telling me what it means". Hey, I just learned what a dieresis is!

omnium-gatherum is great, but i gotta go with jambalaya, as i want that word to mean as many different things as possible

I will need about 7 months to decide indeed, how did you know?
