It's Marvy, Nifty! The 60's Beach Movie thread!

So I just watched Beach Blanket Bingo and Ride Wild Surf. I planning on watching all of these movies. Yes they are silly but there's surf music and bikinis! Any recommendations of other American International Pictures I should seek out? Fabian, Miki Dora, Nancy Sinatra, Donna Loren, Frankie Avalon, Annette Funicello, and go go girls and boys. Even non-beach related movies like Ski Party or Fireball 500? What about Bruce Brown's Endless Summer or his other films? Even Drag movies cause they're groovy too!

If anything Tim Carey's performance is worth watching Beach Blanket Bingo for, he's crazy.

Muscle Beach Party was a good one because it has Little Stevie Wonder. Endless Summer is a classic. It's a Mad Mad Mad Mad World has a pretty funny surfnik character that's in a couple of scenes, plus it has some great period footage of the PCH.

Oh and a bunch of Monkees episodes have this vibe too. Plus their movie is a must-see classic. I guess that's straying pretty far out of the beach party genre, but it's all part of the same continuum.

And don't sleep on The Love Bug!

I haven't seen It's a Mad Mad Mad Mad World or The Love Bug, Thanks!

JacobSanders, Thursday, 14 July 2011 08:05 (fourteen years ago)

Haha, I guess I just recommended a bunch of movies that happen to have Buddy Hackett. The Love Bug has some really funny Disneyfied versions of San Francisco hippies though, and that overall kind of goofy, naive, fun, technicolor comic book feel that the AIP beach party movies have. As far as AIP goes, I personally feel that the safest policy is just to watch every movie that AIP ever released.

I agree.

Did Les Baxter score all of AIP films? I saw that he did a lot of the beach movies.

JacobSanders, Thursday, 14 July 2011 08:14 (fourteen years ago)

I don't know, but I have his Dunwich Horror soundtrack (also AIP) which is pretty cool.

I just watched Dunwich Horror last October and liked it. One of Sandra Dee's more risque movies, I think. Maybe most risque.

Wild Angels was another AIP film with a great soundtrack.

He's hilarious! I want to watch more movies with him.

Have you seen The World's Greatest Sinner, the movie he directed? It's pretty crazy. Zappa soundtrack. He's also great in The Killing of Chinese Bookie, and well, anything else he's in.

The Killing of A Chinese Bookie is the only movie I've seen him in before. I really want to see The World's Greatest Sinner after googling it.

Isn't Morey Amsterdam in one of the beach movies? Tim Carey in Paths of Glory and The Killing is off the charts.

nine months pass...

tcm had a spring break beach party and i recorded all of them, watching For Those Who Think Young and then Endless Summer, it's a Bikini World, Hot Rods To Hell, Girls on the Beach, and Barefoot Adventure!

JacobSanders, Friday, 20 April 2012 03:14 (thirteen years ago)

tell me if you like any of them. i watched half an hour out of a bunch and they were all really samey + washed out cheap looking

Mordy, Friday, 20 April 2012 03:17 (thirteen years ago)

it's a Bikini World has the Gentrys the Toys and the Castaways? playing! i guess they can seem samey but each one i have seen has either really great dance scenes, great bands or screwball comedy. i think Endless Summer is a different movie than most of these.

JacobSanders, Friday, 20 April 2012 03:28 (thirteen years ago)

There are a ton of these on Netflix Instant.

Also, to bring the thread full circle, Tim Carey's scenes in Head:
