John slattery for best supporting actor? i dunno he's one of the bad things about mad men imo.

FNL winning writing and Margo Martindale winning Best Supporting Actress has made it worthwhile

Gukbe, Monday, 19 September 2011 01:34 (thirteen years ago)

it's that kind of "nominate anyone involved with it" show at this point isn't it

run jaymc & jam-master jaymc (some dude), Monday, 19 September 2011 01:34 (thirteen years ago)

definitely very happy for Martindale, she killed it on Justified and i've been a fan of hers since The Riches

it's so goofy that Cloris Leachman was nominated for 'guest performance in a comedy series' -- she was in 22 out of 24 episodes of Raising Hope

It's fitting that every TV series ever has used a version of this song for a mawkish montage that they're using it for this segment.

Still, RIP Andy Whitfield.

.50pm: HF: I liked Louis CK before but now I love him for refusing to applaud the man who beat him in his category, best lead actor in a comedy series, and for looking genuinely disappointed at the (totally wrong) outcome.

it was cute that for his clip in the nominee reel they used the scene of Louie trying to play a cop and being unable to conceal his contempt for the whole idea of acting, but seriously it's not like the award the guy deserves to win is for ACTING anyway

run jaymc & jam-master jaymc (some dude), Monday, 19 September 2011 02:32 (thirteen years ago)

When Louis lost I just saw him turn to Pamela Adlon who was making a joke or something. Didn't notice was pissed off.

a: that is correct

anorange (abanana), Monday, 19 September 2011 03:00 (thirteen years ago)

Should've figured that the "They laugh at yewww" hillbilly mom from the Eastwood-boxing-deathfest would become a TV star.

incredibly middlebrow (Dr Morbius), Monday, 19 September 2011 11:42 (thirteen years ago)

Because her acting was too layered to be fully comprehended within the limitations of a feature film?

Gukbe, Monday, 19 September 2011 15:10 (thirteen years ago)

within the limitations of a camouflaged 1930s boxing B-picture, perhaps.

I did think her (Alexander Payne) segment in Paris j'etaime was one of that film's few assets.

incredibly middlebrow (Dr Morbius), Monday, 19 September 2011 15:25 (thirteen years ago)

btw jon i know you're WRITTEN ME OFF or whatever but your post about the modern family joke was a tad sean penn

Geez guys I wasn't like offended that he didn't take tolerance seriously or whatever, just thought it kinda undercut a decent point with a completely lame, tired punchline.

Modern Family will never be comlpete garbage as long as Ty Burrell is in the cast. Straight up funniest physical comedian on TV right now.

jon /via/ chi 2.0, Monday, 19 September 2011 16:47 (thirteen years ago)

have you guys seen "The Musical Man" episode? that's probably the funniest thing I've seen on television this year

i watch MF and occasionally enjoy it but if it disappeared tomorrow i'd never think of it again tbh

run jaymc & jam-master jaymc (some dude), Monday, 19 September 2011 16:49 (thirteen years ago)

yeah, there are good performances and some good episodes but it relies too often on cliches and laziness. to their credit, though, they cut back on the forced sentimentality that closed every episode of the first season.

Gukbe, Monday, 19 September 2011 16:52 (thirteen years ago)

is ty burrell the goofy dad character? they go to that well waaaaay too often maybe bcuz its one of the only characters they can successfully write for idk

tbh my problem with you is more that you have to be in like full-on snark mode 100% of the time and clown anyone that ever makes any kind of remotely earnest comment

jon /via/ chi 2.0, Monday, 19 September 2011 16:56 (thirteen years ago)

yeah i'm the worst, deal with it i guess

sorry i implied that you sometimes take things a little too seriously and lack a sense of humor, don't know where i ever got that idea but i was clearly in the wrong.

yes, yes you do

sick yr finger up his butt (DJP), Monday, 19 September 2011 17:38 (thirteen years ago)

Ha, just kidding, they also gave top acting awards to two CBS sitcoms, and there is possibly nothing less funny than CBS sitcoms.

michael assbender (Eric H.), Monday, 19 September 2011 17:38 (thirteen years ago)

Its required by law if a show wins more than three Emmys in a single year, iirc. Enjoy your Downton Abbey too, tbh.

jon /via/ chi 2.0, Monday, 19 September 2011 17:39 (thirteen years ago)

I'm pretty sure Melissa McCarthy won because she was so great in Bridesmaids and not because of her sitcom.

I still need to see that.

Johnny Fever, Monday, 19 September 2011 17:57 (thirteen years ago)

btw i was confused about Luther being nominated for mini-series -- obv a 6-episode British series is not as serialized as an American show, but it wasn't a one-off, there was a 2nd series/season. do the Emmys always categorize those kinds of shows that way?

run jaymc & jam-master jaymc (some dude), Monday, 19 September 2011 18:00 (thirteen years ago)

Obsessed is not as fun as it could have been.

¯\(°_o)/¯ (Nicole), Monday, 19 September 2011 18:00 (thirteen years ago)

I'm pretty sure Melissa McCarthy won because she was so great in Bridesmaids and not because of her sitcom.

LOL that this is widely presumed to be an Emmy win to preliminarily make-up for an impending Oscar snub.

michael assbender (Eric H.), Monday, 19 September 2011 18:01 (thirteen years ago)

Bring back Yes, Dear!

Johnny Fever, Monday, 19 September 2011 18:03 (thirteen years ago)

The new Sherlock was also nominated in the miniseries category, I think they just have no idea how to handle British shows.

jon /via/ chi 2.0, Monday, 19 September 2011 18:04 (thirteen years ago)

fwiw Mike & Molly has a lot of emo/self-help stuff about the characters struggling with their weight and meeting in an Overeaters Anonymous group. obv that's not to say there aren't fat jokes or that it's a super great show but that is the framework in which those jokes exist (mostly w/ the main characters being self-deprecating or other jerky characters being mean about their weight).

incredibly middlebrow (Dr Morbius), Monday, 19 September 2011 18:39 (thirteen years ago)

Anything less than 6 episodes is considered a mini-series, apparently (Downton Abbey was transmitted in 4 70-odd minute chunks). Luther is the outlier, though, it makes no sense. It's also strange because Downton Abbey could conceivably win next year as well.

Gukbe, Monday, 19 September 2011 20:51 (thirteen years ago)

"two-time nominee for best miniseries" would be pretty hilarious
