stet can you code this poll so that voting "flour" instantly bans the user? thanks

they both have their uses

one dis leads to another (ian), Friday, 15 July 2011 18:37 (fourteen years ago)

things like spinach tortillas or roasted red pepper tortillas are abominations and ought to be destroyed.

one dis leads to another (ian), Friday, 15 July 2011 18:37 (fourteen years ago)

let the tortilla fit the filling imo

fajitas, for example, require a nice soft gummy tortilla de harina, maybe 9" in diameter. and what about burritos? you can't have no corn tortilla burrito, those've gotta be flour as well, but thinner, somewhat crispy (just barely), and more in the 15" diameter range. this is important.

for everything else though (tacos), yeah, go with corn. enchiladas especially.

del griffith, Friday, 15 July 2011 18:37 (fourteen years ago)

As an easy solution to both the problems of handling food in microgravity and preventing bread crumbs from escaping into delicate instruments, wheat flour tortillas have been used on many NASA Shuttle missions since 1985

is this a joke, fucking corn!

steady yachting (Pillbox), Friday, 15 July 2011 18:39 (fourteen years ago)

it is totally true that flour tortillas in the right context, especially handmade ones, can totally be great

the corn tortilla however is completely beyond reproach

a vote for flour is a vote against Big Corn - remember that

DEHUMANIZE YOURSELF AND FACE TO BLOODSHED (Princess TamTam), Friday, 15 July 2011 18:40 (fourteen years ago)

the flour tortillas i had in baja are among the most delicious things i have ever eaten. especially recomended is tacos el yaqui in rosarito

you haven't tried mum's vaguely pharmaceutical-tasting masa blobs then.

Philip Nunez, Friday, 15 July 2011 18:43 (fourteen years ago)

I don't think there'd be any situation where you'd have to make a real 'decision' between flour and corn, like their uses are so clear-cut that it's not a real vs.

iatee, Friday, 15 July 2011 18:45 (fourteen years ago)

god, masa. i'll never forget my first sope - no going back. gotta eat me a pupusa one of these days and really get in over my head.

del griffith, Friday, 15 July 2011 18:45 (fourteen years ago)

There are a bunch of amazing pupuserías around here. SO FREAKING GOOD. I sort of agree that it really depends on the use. I mean I love fajitas and you couldn't really do those with corn. I mean I guess you could but it doesn't seem right. Great, I'm hungry now.

(。◕‿‿◕。) (ENBB), Friday, 15 July 2011 18:47 (fourteen years ago)

On the other hand I could prob eat corn tortillas as a snack. I don't know!

if its a choice between handmade flour vs storebought corn, i'll go w/flour every time no matter what the use

DEHUMANIZE YOURSELF AND FACE TO BLOODSHED (Princess TamTam), Friday, 15 July 2011 18:50 (fourteen years ago)

oh for sure, storebought corn is usually plasticy shit

iatee, Friday, 15 July 2011 18:52 (fourteen years ago)

but if you held out your hands like morpheus w/ one handmade corn tortilla and one handmade flour tortilla in each and said "pick wisely" I would take the corn tortilla

if you're gonna throw one of the two on a griddle, butter it, roll it up and go at it on its own, you're gonna wanna choose a corn tortilla every time, and the reason for this is because they are delectable in and of themselves whereas flour tortillas are merely edible vessels.

del griffith, Friday, 15 July 2011 18:59 (fourteen years ago)

that would be pretty dope if charon's boat was actually a flour tortilla

this thread = now i am very very hungry

steady yachting (Pillbox), Friday, 15 July 2011 19:12 (fourteen years ago)

i can get pretty fresh store-bought corn tortillas, but you could even just dampen some paper towels and interlace them with the tortillas in the microwave.

A True White Kid that can Jump (Granny Dainger), Friday, 15 July 2011 19:12 (fourteen years ago)

I bought some microwave tortilla warmers a few years ago that work great, esp on small taco-size corn tortillas.

Josef K-Doe (WmC), Friday, 15 July 2011 19:13 (fourteen years ago)

no microwave here. i'll totally steam them though!

to me, corn tortillas are like peaches- when good, they are like, AWESOME. but when they're bad, they are really bad, but also a little heartbreaking, because you know how good they _can_ be.

corn tortillas if they're fresh and warm. rancid corn tortillas are horrible and stink up whatever environment they're in.

flour tortillas are harder to get wrong, except for the gumminess factor.

spent a summer in honduras and started out eating corn tortillas with such zeal but got so sick of it now they are basically revolting

i cooked & ate bean burritos flour tortilla every day for almost half of last semester & didnt get sick of them, but they are much more innocuous (not a fault)

Interestingly, the origin of the taco arabe allegedly stems from Lebanese immigrants in Mexico. Though of course Mexico overwhelmingly goes corn. Tex-Mex largely gets the tortilla de harina, though I guess they often do wheat in Durango.

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 21 July 2011 00:53 (fourteen years ago)

Has any one here eaten a white flour tortilla chip? Ever? No? That's because white flour tortillas would make some pretty goddamn lousy chips. Take this as a lesson and grow wise. Maize tortillas schmeck sehr gut, ja.
