Could you be in a long-term relationship with a publican?

Awkward hours, elements of threat to personal safety, everyone in the village owes them money, and on top of all that the breweries are probably screwing them for every penny they make anyway.

Who'd be a publican's other half?

I voted no without reading the original post because I assumed "publican" was "'publican" as in republican. So feel free to - 1 from "I wouldn't"

gyac otm btw, hellish job imo, but partic in rural areas where it's almost a community resource/public service

who shivs a git (darraghmac), Sunday, 17 July 2011 16:31 (thirteen years ago)

It's totally a public service in rural areas. GF's grandmother has a combination pub and funeral home in the back end of nowhere, Offaly and it's the centre of the community. It's a tough life but has managed to support a pretty huge family for generations. Of the careers open to you if you live in a small rural village, there are lots of worse ones.

definitely, especially as they were also undertakers.

gyac, Sunday, 17 July 2011 16:40 (thirteen years ago)

went out with a girl whose father owned a pub/hotel the back end of achill. Hotel was seasonal, with nightclub attached, pub was as you describe- every day, ten am start to get it ready, and close at midnight (or whenever on the weekends) - and hardly ever 'busy'

Hardly worth running it as a going concern, iirc, and completely unsellable as an asset.

Considering the hours, you'd need to view it as a vocation imo.

who shivs a git (darraghmac), Monday, 18 July 2011 23:31 (thirteen years ago)

my sister and i had a girlhood dream that we would inherit a pub or a farm and then drink it and then later when we were old we would live together in a little wooden cottage and make moonshine and have people on. our role models were the old sisters in the waltons who mixed up batches of papa's recipe and the old men in the muppets.

estela, Tuesday, 19 July 2011 00:05 (thirteen years ago)

i think that would be very nice, but not publican as such, to be strict about it

who shivs a git (darraghmac), Tuesday, 19 July 2011 00:55 (thirteen years ago)

it was a longwinded i wouldn't, because only a fool publican would marry into an outfit like that and i wouldn't marry a fool.

estela, Tuesday, 19 July 2011 01:17 (thirteen years ago)

i nearly married into an outfit like that ;_;

real horrorshow goroveeting, droogs

thinking of the 3 married pub landlords I've been on friendly-ish terms with, 2 of them had permanently exhausted-looking wives, and 1 I never met the wife of because she never came to the pub and therefore I believe pretty much never saw her husband

now this latter lifestyle may well have some advantages, but still, gives me pause from what otherwise seems like a fairly pleasant idea

the ascent of nyan (a passing spacecadet), Tuesday, 19 July 2011 11:18 (thirteen years ago)

This is disappointing. I thought it was going to be a thread about tell tale signs that you might be in a relationship with a publican. For example:

* Your partner shouts 'TIME PLEASE' late every evening
* There are lots of people you don't know in your house, and they're all drinking

As for the parody thread, I'd suggest:

* Your partner comes home every night with fish in his beak

etc

In antiquity, publicans (Greek τελώνης telōnēs; Latin publicanus (singular); publicani (plural)) were public contractors, in which role they often supplied the Roman legions and military, managed the collection of port duties, and oversaw public building projects. In addition, they served as tax collectors for the Republic (and later the Roman Empire), bidding on contracts (from the Senate in Rome) for the collection of various types of taxes. Importantly, this role as tax collectors was not emphasized until late into the history of the Republic (c. 1st century BC). The publicans were usually of the class of equites.

Treeship, Tuesday, 17 May 2016 23:46 (nine years ago)

dating an equite would be a leg up for me and my family. i'd be all about it.

I think one of the defining characteristics of a thread starter is whether or not they are overjoyed by promisingly incomprehensible digressions from the OP or whether they well you know...

I'm former btw and am agog to see what the fuck any of that means so please do elaborate and continue xp
