BTW, this will be the last single year poll going back in time. I'll be grouping years in the future since the output of horror films will begin to diminish. I'll probably divide up the 60's and 50's with 3 polls each and then do one or two polls for the 40's, 30's and 20's.

Darin, Tuesday, 19 July 2011 06:15 (thirteen years ago)

A lot of wtf entries here:

Multiple Maniacs
Eugenie… the Story of Her Journey Into Perversion
Even Dwarfs Started Small
Valerie and Her Week of Wonders

The latter's prolly the best movie on the list. But I'm going for The Wizard of Gore because it features one of my all-time favorite endings. And because I want to hype the remarkable 2007 remake starring Crispin Glover. See it, y'all!

Runner up: the very well-named Bizarre

Kevin John Bozelka, Tuesday, 19 July 2011 06:25 (thirteen years ago)

And poor Crawford stuck in freakshows like Trog. Sadness.

Kevin John Bozelka, Tuesday, 19 July 2011 06:25 (thirteen years ago)

want to vote for Girly, prob should vote for Wizard of Gore, Even Dwarfs Started Small is kinda great but (yawn here i go again) not horror imo

I dream of vodka sandwich (jjjusten), Tuesday, 19 July 2011 06:32 (thirteen years ago)

Honestly, I don't think I've seen any of these, so I was putting my complete trust into IMDB regarding what may and may not be "horror".

Darin, Tuesday, 19 July 2011 06:40 (thirteen years ago)

Entertaining Mr Sloane is great but it ain't a horror movie in any way shape or form.

dave lool (Noodle Vague), Tuesday, 19 July 2011 07:10 (thirteen years ago)

Valerie And Her Week Of Wonders by a country mile.

модный хипстер (ShariVari), Tuesday, 19 July 2011 07:32 (thirteen years ago)

Yeah, Dwarves is the best movie here (of the ones I've seen) but not even close to being horror. I think I'd have to vote The Bird with the Crystal Plumage. Valerie is a beautiful movie with a great soundtrack, but eh, I dunno. That version of Dorian Gray is actually pretty cool. I've only seen 8 of these, so I won't actually vote.

lizard tails, a self-regenerating food source for survival (wk), Tuesday, 19 July 2011 07:53 (thirteen years ago)

although I don't recognise any of these, can i just say that 1970 had the best title names for horror movies

Summer Slam! (Ste), Tuesday, 19 July 2011 09:40 (thirteen years ago)

No voting unless we've seen more than 8? I'd be pleasantly surprised if I'd seen more than 8 or more for half the polls.

Valerie and Her Week of Wonders, but I would have gone for Portabella's Cuadecuc, Vampir if I had a chance.

Jedmond, Tuesday, 19 July 2011 10:18 (thirteen years ago)

Crystal Plumage is good early Argento, and features a nice Morricone score, if memory serves. The Herzog isn't horror at all (unless you think little people are innately scary).

Equinox was made by a teenaged Dennis Muren, future Industrial Light and Magic wizard, Oscar winner and Walk Of Fame star recipient; and it "stars" the dude who went on to play Herb Tarlek on "WKRP in Cincinnati." It was later purchased by some b-movie studio and recut with new footage and plot elements for the drive-in circuit. It's an interesting precursor to "Evil Dead" and suchlike, and you can tell that Muren had a future in effects. There's a nice Criterion edition, and it's available for instant watch on Hulu.

BIG HOOBA aka the stankdriver (Phil D.), Tuesday, 19 July 2011 11:41 (thirteen years ago)

Yeah, but it's pretty much only interesting for the reasons you mentioned, no? That is, it's not very good.

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 19 July 2011 11:42 (thirteen years ago)

Well, yeah.

BIG HOOBA aka the stankdriver (Phil D.), Tuesday, 19 July 2011 11:44 (thirteen years ago)

I mean I'll probably actually vote for The Bird with Crystal Plumage. Its plot makes the perfect bridge between Hitchcock and DePalma.

Adding my voice to the chorus of Even Dwarfs Started Small being nowhere near a horror. Great film, though.

It's probably going to be Valerie for me, but the pull of Wizard of Gore is strong.

oh I don't know, I haven't been paying very close attention to these threads. I thought maybe it was for hardcore horror fans only or something. I've only seen that many because there are so many not-really-horror movies here like campy AIP stuff that I love (Dunwich Horror, Scream and Scream Again), hippy stuff (I drink yr blood), John Waters (Multiple Maniacs), random art films (Dwarves, Valerie), euro-sleaze (Dorian Gray, Nude Vampire) etc.

what an inauspicious beginning for one of the greatest decades for horror films

Any one can have ketchup for their food, I don't care any more (Edward III), Tuesday, 19 July 2011 20:27 (thirteen years ago)

couldn't bring myself to vote against Girly

CharlieS, Tuesday, 19 July 2011 21:17 (thirteen years ago)

I haven't seen any of these except the nude vampire. which was just being played muted at a bar I was at. but I remember thinking the colors looked cool.

original bgm, Thursday, 21 July 2011 14:45 (thirteen years ago)

can't imagine anything here is more fun/crazy/obsessively tedious than Even Dwarves Started Small but it's not exactly a horror film

No Broehner (Shakey Mo Collier), Thursday, 21 July 2011 15:14 (thirteen years ago)

gonna go with Wizard of Gore

never seen the Glover remake, sounds interesting

I dream of vodka sandwich (jjjusten), Saturday, 30 July 2011 23:07 (thirteen years ago)

Interesting, WIki cites it as referenced by Of Montreal, Broadcast and Espers, and connects it to "A Company of Wolves." How hip.

Josh in Chicago, Sunday, 31 July 2011 00:07 (thirteen years ago)

i like 'valerie' more than all but like 2 or 3 horror movies i've ever seen, but it's not really a horror movie.
