Lady at work brings those things in sometimes - Penguins and stuff. Sure I've seen a Trio or two.

Not sure about the Blue Riband though.

I persist in calling them Chimpy Chompies which iirc was one of the amusing names suggested in the "we're renaming them!" advert.

Miss the most: *proper* original thick and syrupy Lucozade, as opposed to the watery gruel that replaced it about a decade ago. The real stuff was fucking dope and essential 24hr garage purchase when I was pulling all-nighters at lol university.

that mustardless plate (Bill A), Tuesday, 19 July 2011 21:41 (fourteen years ago)

the indian and continental shop round the corner from us sells Saudi-produced Vimto cordial and it's in the proper old-fashioned glass bottle and is as thick and syrupy as it was when i was a kid.

costs a small fortune tho

Yeah, NV, yr right that Vimto has been watered down too. Likely some EU law concerning max sugar content per ml or whatevs? Ruined a couple of great brands though.

They dont call em Snickers bars in the UK anymore? I'm quite sure they do here still. I say "quite sure" cos I don't eat sweets so I'm embarrased to admit I have no idea.

Bloompsday (Trayce), Wednesday, 20 July 2011 10:01 (fourteen years ago)

Was joking. They're still called Snickers, but the packaging now says "More Nuts" because apparently there's more nuts.

think I've seen Brannigan's mustard crisps fairly recently, I think they still exist but were bought by McCoy's and are now in a less papery bag with a smaller butcher

then again I didn't really like them (they captured the things I like least about mustard) so I dunno

have def eaten an Irn Bru bar this year. shd poss not be proud of this, am supposed to be an adult.

The concept of an Irn Bru BAR is blowing my mind.

Bloompsday (Trayce), Wednesday, 20 July 2011 10:20 (fourteen years ago)

Hm. The internet says you can't buy them any more but you can buy "brew"-flavoured Wham bars. The packaging doesn't look familiar so maybe I just found a box of Irn Bru bars which had been on a newsagent shelf for a very long time.

Anyway I dunno if you have Wham bars in Aus but the Bru ones were similar chewy tooth-destroying things.

Sometimes I still get cravings for spearmint Mojos (chew things in a variety of flavours, similar to Fruit Salads I guess) despite probably not having had one since about 1987.

did they have those in the UK though?

because if we extend this to Ireland, I need to mention lemon Cornettoes.

Great stuff, tasted completely artificial and over the top when it first came out. In the late 80's it was changed to be slightly more subtle.

Servants of the SBankh (snoball), Thursday, 21 July 2011 17:07 (fourteen years ago)

A Lemon Cornetto sounds NICE. Refreshing. Though yeah I can't remember ever having one.

kraudive, Thursday, 21 July 2011 17:08 (fourteen years ago)

xp See also: pear drops when they tasted entirely of chemicals, before they were changed to, you know, taste more like pears.

kraudive, Thursday, 21 July 2011 17:10 (fourteen years ago)

gyac, Thursday, 21 July 2011 17:16 (fourteen years ago)

Oh I see. I thought you were saying they were as worst as Toffypops. (Which I don't remember)

kraudive, Thursday, 21 July 2011 17:24 (fourteen years ago)

There used to be a Tutti Frutti Cornetto as well iirc

Number None, Thursday, 21 July 2011 17:28 (fourteen years ago)

Always got these in the same place as those fish & chips biscuits (a shop called 'Alfie's Bargains' iirc, also sold fake Mars Bars):
http://profile.ak.fbcdn.net/hprofile-ak-snc4/41567_127537490614641_7383_n.jpg

kinder, Thursday, 21 July 2011 17:41 (fourteen years ago)

there were two types of fish and chips crisps. there were the superior biscuity ones, which were supposed to be a kind of fishy salt and vinegar i guess although i swear they did do other flavours occasionally, e.g. chicken, altho still fish shaped. the other type had these greasy, 3d latticework fish, and were unpleasant. i tried to find some photo evidence of these to back up my unsatisfactory description but failed. however, in the process i was reminded of smokey bacon piglets, so the overall effort was a success.

Roberto Spiralli, Thursday, 21 July 2011 17:52 (fourteen years ago)

when cornettos first came out we sang the advert tune with revised lyrics:

Just one Cornetto
Geev eet to me
You greedy bastard
They're 50p

graveshitwave (Noodle Vague), Thursday, 21 July 2011 17:58 (fourteen years ago)

Toffypops were great! King of the biscuits you used to occasionally get at school. Getting a toffypop rather those pink cardboard abominations (or worse, a fig roll) was a cause for celebration.

That Cornetto lyric revision was a Little and Large sketch iirc. Except 'you must be joking' rather than greedy bastard (we used to sing that too)

ailsa, Thursday, 21 July 2011 18:05 (fourteen years ago)

In fact, I think the extortionate cost was 40p.

ailsa, Thursday, 21 July 2011 18:06 (fourteen years ago)

40p was a lot of money back when a bag of Snaps was 2 and a half p

graveshitwave (Noodle Vague), Thursday, 21 July 2011 18:12 (fourteen years ago)

variation from my childhood, early 1990s:

just one cornetto
give it to me
not fucking likely

Not discontinued but I never see them any more: the sandwich van which visits my work recently started having Roysters t-bone steak crisps, which I had not seen in at least a decade, but then they stopped again and now I have cravings

no other crisp is quite so... powdery

I mean I can't really think of a single positive-sounding thing to say about them but sometimes they're just what you need, y'know?

the ascent of nyan (a passing spacecadet), Thursday, 21 July 2011 20:14 (fourteen years ago)

cost 40p

.. and yet, they had to re-record it as "Just One Espresso" for Radio1 because of advertising.
