of these I can really only understand the appeal of islam, facebook and camping

I can see the appeal to all of these except for golf and dubstep. I can't decide how to vote though because those two are equally despicable.

The only thing here I like:
Glee - appealing for camp value and to drama nerds

Things I think are appealing in theory even though I'm not personally into them:
minecraft - retro gaming + open playground environment
nascar - fast cars, duh
anime - cartoons full of weirdo adult subject matter

Things that aren't appealing to me but I can get why they're appealing to others:
islam - virgins
lady gaga - outrageous persona + dumb pop music
facebook - for nosy busybodies and stalkers
camping - man vs. nature

things i love:

things i can deal with:
- islam
- anime

things i don't understand or know nothing about:
- nascar
- minecraft (i had never heard of this until this poll btw, am i retarded?)

As a dedicated camper, I can assure you that man vs. nature plays no part in its appeal for me.

I rather like most aspects of nature, although some parts I could do without, such as cold wind-driven rain and biting insects. Just spending time in places where the works of humans are very few and very minor is pleasant to me, so long as I can stay somewhat dry, warm and fed while having that experience.

well yeah, I was trying to sum them all up in a short, glib way. but trying to stay dry, warm, and fed in the wild for an extended period of time is kind of an exercise in man vs. nature isn't it? Not in an antagonistic Herzogian way or anything.

Well I can get with the idea of the cars themselves, and with things like F1 or rally, but nascar seems so boring in comparison.

facebook - pix of yrself taken by other people
golf - frustration/reward gaming sweet spot, a sport fattays can play w/bonus appealing social signifiers, being outside w/ones bros is nice
glee - lol n00bs
camping - being outside w/ones bros is nice, communing w/nature is deep

camping and facebook and the only of these things i personally enjoy, tho i could see getting into golf or minecraft

go to a live event and you'll 'get' it - its just a big loud party with fast cars and shit

dubstep seems easy to grasp - big beat + wobbles for drunk white people to enjoy

minecraft - unfamiliar with

nascar - pit crew efficiency is a wondrous thing unto itself, but beyond that it is just cars driving in circles

camping - this is my winner - i genuinely find the entire phenomenon of camping completely incomprehensible. i mean when you ~romanticise~ it it sounds nice but you're never gonna get away from the awful things about sleeping in a tent - just the sheer level of discomfort involved, why would you do that to yourself? i don't get it at all. if you ever catch me sleeping in a tent it will be because the actual apocalypse has occurred and there are no more buildings in the world.

also bonus points because so many otherwise sane people i know seem to be okay with (and even actively into) camping - i know no "nascar" or "minecraft" fans

minecraft is a really low-budget garage computer game that was so simple and addictive it netted the guy who made it millions within months, which is why its such a big thing.

sometimes you gotta sleep in a tent if you want to go on epic travels to magical places and stuff. it sucks but it's the truth.

Camping is as comfortable as you make it.

It does get romanticized quite a bit, this is true, but there's just something therapeutic/magical (lol) about staring at a camp-fire, talking with friends.

Aw man, part of the fun is knowing you're only gonna get like 4-5 hours of sleep at night and that you get to take an equal size nap the next day cos there's nothing else to do.

minecraft: i seem to lack the crafting-addict gene but it had a neat look and a neat mechanic and at no point did you look down "iron sights" at guys in camo, so no problem

islam: good architecture

nascar: never watched it but people can get so snotty about how dumb it is which is much worse than anything involving cars going fast could ever be

golf: you can play by yourself or competitively and drive a small vehicle over interesting terrain while drinking so that's cool but fuck the giant meticulously-manicured fenced-in golf courses sprawling over nine zillion city blocks that apparently weren't being used for anything important and thus could have been public parks, maybe even with little plastic holes in the ground every now and then if it's so important to you

glee: <3 j. lynch but nothing else in the two episodes of this i've seen was remotely standable

camping: friends, stars, food that tastes like smoke, drugs if you're feeling it, the respiratory noise of a lit coleman lantern, the satisfaction of killing all the mosquitos in your tent and keeping the flap zipped, the disoriented wakeup: probably the best thing on this list
