Turning pro: Classic or Dud?

I've been offered a spot in a professional church choir in Boston. I'm very excited but also a little nervous; there are onl 18 singers in the group and if I make any mistakes, it will stick out BADLY. On the plus side, I might get to do some solo work, depending on what concerts we're doing this year and what the other three basses are looking for as far as singing is concerned.

What have your experiences been with getting paid to do a beloved hobby? Has it been positive or negative? Would you do it again? Are you still doing it? Most importanty, do you feel the same passion for the hobby now that it's bringing in a paycheck?

How fortunate!

In my case, getting paid to listen to music and talk about it = classic. I say give it a shot and see what happens! You won't know until it's been attempted.

Happened to me: I was producing a fanzine about comics and it gradually started making money, then I was hired (with my mag) on a pro basis and I made the most money I ever had, up to then. It was fantastic, though my new boss was an arsehole - there are often things to put up with as downsides to the money. Still, few of us are lucky enough to make a living (it's not clear to me whether your singing will do that) doing something we would do for fun, so grab it with both hands is my advice, for what that's worth.

Sadly, it wouldn't be "a living" unless said living was done in a cardboard box. Still, it's a step in the right direction...

What a letdown, I thought Dan was finally selling his body to the night.

Congratulations Dan! I wouldn't worry too much about making mistakes - they wouldn't have offered it to you if they didn't think you were capable of the job.

five years pass...

Looking back on this now, I am amused I that I was so terrified/intimidated by this group.
