What is the best / worst present you have ever given / received? And why do men think that a cuddly toy is a good present for a girl?

Worst present - a book on woodcarving written in German with no pictures. I was aged seven at the time.

Because men are idiots, Emma. Hello! It's true though, they are bad gift givers and think that stuff that is soft and cuddly and immature is good for women. My boyfriend bought me three packs of cigarettes as a gift last night - way better than cuddly toys or flowers.

The best present I ever received was probably...hmmm. My mom bought me a big snowglobe that plays music, it's got all the Alice in Wonderland characters. It doesn't seem like a great gift but it was very out of the blue, she knew that it was one of my favorites and saw it and spent a lot on it. Otherwise I was given the New Art Riot EP by my parents - I was shocked, I still can't figure out how they remembered from years ago that I was wanting it. Basically both showed a lot of thought. Oh, and my sister making me Pokemon PJs was very cute.

The worst present I ever received was...well. Okay, let me preface this by saying it wasn't a bad present, it was the accompanying attitude that made it a bad present. In theory, a fancy massager is a great present for me, and I loved it at first. Until I started asking then-boyfriend to use it on me. "I bought you that so I'd never have to rub your back again", he says, without a drop of irony or sarcasm or humor. He was serious. It was the most unromantic and cruel Christmas gift possible, in light of that. Not only that but how the hell do you rub your own back with those things?! You'll put it out further trying to contort!

The best present I ever gave was easily the Derek Jeter autograph I got for my grandmother. She was so happy I thought she was going to cry. Except now she and my cousin, who is brain damaged and can't remember things, fight over whose autograph it is, he says I gave it to HIM which is just clearly untrue.

The worst present I ever gave was a Palm Pilot to aforementioned massage ex. Not because it was a bad present but because it still pisses me off that I spent that money on it.

Best - um, maybe the great boots my mum got me for Xmas. I love them. I love my telly too. Worst - Pete gave me a book for my birthday last year called something like 'The Conquest of Ugliness'. Cheers mate. Also cuddly toys. An ex just posted me a cuddly koala clutching a boomerang (I do hope he doesn't read this). Arrrggghhh.

Best I gave was (to the koala boy) 2 tickets to see Villa play. He loves Villa and was skint. I had never been to a footie match. The bastard then took his brother to the match (oh you can't have girls in the Holt End Emma they wouldn't be allowed and anyway you'll just embarrass me). Ungrateful sod. Worst - probably some crappy old tie or socks to my dad or grandpa.

I'm not that much of a cuddly toy person, but I luv my Bagpuss. He has just the right amount of squish.

Madchen, Thursday, 9 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

That book was ironic. I still can't walk straight you know.

Pete, Thursday, 9 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I are being male and I'm the best present buyer in the whole world. Ask my associates if you don't believe me.

DG, Thursday, 9 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

We should *turn Japanese* and give cash.

nathalie (nathalie), Thursday, 9 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Best: CD:UK denim back-pocket style ring-bound pad.

Worst: A pint of Napoleon Brandy.

Michael Jones, Thursday, 9 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I am being male also, just like DG (well, similar anyway). And I am FANTASTIC PRESENT GIVER and modest also. Mind you, when I was all your ages I was quite fantastically rubbish, and still shudder at some of the things I gave some ppl.

I get things almost weekly from Adam. A new shirt or a little tchotke or a little drawing of a rabbit or a silver bracelet with a green stone. These are the best, out of nowhere things

The worst is of course any book i have not asked for. Most people see me read often and eccleticly and assume i will read anything. reading a book on neon art and next reading russian poetry makes people think i will read a dry history of the Lindbergh Kidnapping or a history of pub signs.

My friend always gives me the strangest books. Always rather sexual. Maybe she's hinting at something? In return I give her obscure CDs hoping she will get picture ("Stop giving me books!") Alas it's a vicious circle.

thirteen years pass...

not sure if anyone's discussing this on another thread but what are your go-to xmas gifts this year?
here's a few suggestions of objects of desire (emphasis entertainment):

Simon Reynolds - Shock And Awe book (preferred UK edition -hardcover- is waaay more flash, though US paperback is probably easier to thumb thru)
Various - NOW! 95 (2CD) pop n awe!
Soundbreaking DVD (PBS music docu/series)
