For the ones that got cut off:

"It's raw and mean-spirited, with too many of the Smurf word substitutions more naughty than nice ("Who Smurfed?" or "Where the Smurf are we?"). That's Smurfed up." Nell Minow, Chicago Sun-Times

"Director Raja Gosnell also made "Scooby-Doo" and "Beverly Hills Chihuahua." At least for families, this is a bit smurfing better than those." Joe Neumaier, NY Daily News

"Even Neil Patrick Harris, who has proved he can save just about any sinking ship (see prime-time awards shows such as the Emmys or Tonys), cannot make this boat float." Betsy Sharkey, LA Times

"...the adults who take [the kids] to see the movie won't feel too good about themselves, or their existences, or the state of life on the planet, as the lights go up." Glenn Kenny, MSN Movies

"Pop singer Katy Perry's Smurfette faces award questions about being a rare female smurf, and blurts out, "I kissed a Smurf and I liked it."" Roger Moore, Orlando Sentinel

Are the Smurfs still a thing among children today? I always liked the Snorks so much better. The Smurfs were just weird.

Saw the preview for this when I took my kids to "Pooh," looks absolutely wretched.

Those CGI Smurfs are terrifying. This looks to be the horror movie of the year.

Seriously they might as well make Shirt Tales movie -- are any young children today even aware of the Smurfs? The Smurfs weren't in syndication when I was a little kid (might have been a regional thing). I dunno, maybe Boomerang shows episodes or something.

I just watched as much of the trailer as I could take--"I think I just smurfed in my mouth" is an actual line in this movie. Gross.

I find it hard to believe that the phrase "not your papa's Papa Smurf" or some variation thereof was never used. Get on the ball, Tinseltown!

My Boyfriend Could Be A Spanish Man (R Baez), Saturday, 30 July 2011 01:40 (fourteen years ago)

And no Papa Johns "Papa Smurf" special or something like that. What's the deal?

My Boyfriend Could Be A Spanish Man (R Baez), Saturday, 30 July 2011 01:42 (fourteen years ago)

what's amazing to me about this movie is that they didn't realize that the whole charm of the smurfs was that they had their own little world. Having them in a real world city should be saved for like, smurfs 5.

Matt Armstrong, Saturday, 30 July 2011 01:55 (fourteen years ago)

so there aren't any mushroom houses?

Beverly Hills Chihuahua was great btw. the first one that is. the sequel was pretty weak.

my theory about these things is that these terrible kids' flicks could be about anything, but like any other genre in Hollywood, it helps to have an established brand to get the thing greenlit. even if the kids have never seen the o.g. Smurfs or Alvin & The Chipmunks or Garfield or whatever, the studio execs know what it is and the parents buying the tickets know what it is so they're good to go.

It's almost as if they're craftily marketing it to people who lived through the 80s and have children

if nothing else this movie did finally prompt someone to reprint peyo's original comics, which are great.
