Movies/shows where actors reference their real lives and it's actually funny

I was thinking about the line in the Expendables when they did the Schwarzenegger cameo..."he wants to be President". That got a laugh out of everyone. However I think in most cases this sort of thing is real groan worthy.

You know, like this thing with Katy Perry in the Smurfs movie

Cary Grant referring to Archie Leach in His Girl Friday.

Explain for those of us with no intention of seeing the Smurfs movie.

wait, you don't read every single thread on ILE???

apparently Katy Perry voices Smurfette and one of her lines is "I kissed a Smurf and I liked it"

You mean actors/actresses not playing themselves, right? I was thinking of Elliot Gould in Nashville, or Dean Martin in Kiss Me, Stupid.

clemenza, Friday, 29 July 2011 17:05 (fourteen years ago)

yeah. so most of the Simpsons stuff wouldn't work.

I'm almost positive there was a truly great thread about this, from a couple of years ago? For the life of me don't know how to find it, but it was next level.

Are you thinking of this one?

Oops.

tv shows within tv shows: an ocd thread for jaymc and nabisco

if, Friday, 29 July 2011 17:17 (fourteen years ago)

kinda thinking Two and a Half Men might be a good example of this, I don't really like the show, but the way they cartoonishly exaggerate Sheen's debauchery is funnier when you consider that Sheen himself is basically all that and more

frogbs, Friday, 29 July 2011 17:17 (fourteen years ago)

I guess Tristram Shandy wouldn't count, even though they're playing versions of themselves.

Gukbe, Friday, 29 July 2011 17:19 (fourteen years ago)

don't Damon & Affleck talk about sharing whores in that Kevin Smith movie? I laughed bcz I have no doubt it's true.

you call it trollin' i call it steamrollin' (Dr Morbius), Friday, 29 July 2011 17:19 (fourteen years ago)

xxxp - yeah...i think that thread was basically what i was looking for (had i known it existed)

frogbs, Friday, 29 July 2011 17:19 (fourteen years ago)

and no doubt Kevin Smith is the worst at this

In Steel, there's a scene wherein the titular character (played by noted American basketball player/amateur sheriff/rapper/movie genie Shaquille O'Neal) and his sidekick are trapped in a room and in order to get out, Steel has to throw something at a button on a wall that's ten feet up and 15 feet away. When informed of this, Steel exclaims in worry, "You know I can't make those!"

Mucho! Macho! Honcho!: Turn Off The Dark (C. Grisso/McCain), Friday, 29 July 2011 17:34 (fourteen years ago)

He (Shaq) makes a very very very similar joke in one of the umpteen Scary Movie sequels, during a scene with Dr. Phil. I know that doesn't count for this thread since he plays himself, but really funny that he's milked this in multiple places.

xp I remember that one! It's dumb "4th-wall breaking" but I like it

frogbs, Friday, 29 July 2011 17:43 (fourteen years ago)

obviously the whole "Jerry" plot on Seinfeld is this but really "next level"

frogbs, Friday, 29 July 2011 17:44 (fourteen years ago)

xxxxxxxxxxxxxxp IF, yes! That's the one! Nabisco and Jaymc killing it

I for one am (Le Bateau Ivre), Friday, 29 July 2011 17:49 (fourteen years ago)

yeah that thread is pretty good. forgot about the Janitor from Scrubs having that small role that J.D. discovered. one of the few actually clever moments on that show.
