I've been to quite a few of these. I think I'll vote for Bosnia as it was a real surprise how awesome it was.

I like Macedonia's flag vs Montenegrians being the statistically the tallest people in the world.

Poland's a wonderful country. I try to go at least once a year.

Budapest and Sarajevo are the best capitals.

I've only been to Czech Republic and Hungary (plus various former Soviet republics), but Budapest was definitely a highpoint

Having said that I've not been to Prague or Berlin.

Out of these I've only been to what was East Germany but I'm German and Croatian in heritage. Since I fly the German flag in nearly all other instances I'm going with Croatia this time.

I lived 5 years in Prague and traveled to most countries on this list - and pretty much loved all of them since I'm a sucker for these parts of the world. I'm pretty sure the Czech Rep. is objectively far from being the "best" but you know sentimental reasons and all that so it'll get my vote

Croatia or East Germany for me, the former for coast the latter for culture and general awesomeness. Slovenia is absolutely beautiful, I've heard Bosnia is as well.

Never been to any of these places; gonna vote Romania on the grounds of Ionesco, Cioran and Gheorghe Hagi.

Can't help but vote for the thread that I took over: Albanians

xxp - yes - been dying to go back to Slovenia - would make for a perfect 10 day holiday this summer with a bit of Alpine scenery and some seaside as well - but I find it is still sadly and absurdly difficult to motivate people to spend holiday in post-communist countries...

licorice oratorio (baaderonixx), Wednesday, 3 August 2011 09:40 (fourteen years ago)

East Germany might be the obvious choice but I'm going with it.

CHILLIN' WILL SHAKESPEARE (King Boy Pato), Wednesday, 3 August 2011 09:40 (fourteen years ago)

Who's been through the curtain, ie been to these countries when it was still in place? During a highschool exchange trip we went from Hamburg to West-Berlin, by bus. Of course the mood in the bus was way more "oh we're in communist territories" than the atmosphere of the countryside itself exuded.
At the border, every passport was to be handed over to customs. A very stern looking officer then entered the bus to hand back the passports to each one of us individually. There was absolute silence. In my memory he looked straight through me. I secretly took a picture of the surroundings (on which nothing significant can be seen), man I felt excited..

Spend 10 days in Slovenia a few weeks back. Hiking in the Julian Alps was fantastic, Soča valley is beautiful. Also checked out the seaside (there's 20 km of it!) but went back to the mountains on the same day: camp sites were horrible (for tents) and it was way too busy for us. Piran looked really nice though.

I remember when I was a kid, we took a daytrip to look at the barbed wire on the border between West Germany and Czechoslovakia. Somewhere near Passau iirc.
