The most useful things I learned in library school weren't theoretical. But I did actually use some of the skills I picked up in taking classes in online searching. Granted, that material could have been learned outside a degree program. If you are going to go into technical services, especially cataloging, there is a lot of detail-oriented training you need to pick up. If you are going to go into reference work, it's useful to be familiar with major information sources for several subjects, before going on the market as a librarian.
