yes sort of, in that I work in a library. But, as previously mentioned, qualified librarians are very touchy about anyone but qualified librians calling themselves a librarian.

Rosemary, "Library Science" is probably an unfortunate term. I have an MLS and I certainly don't see it as being anywhere close to being an academic achievement comparable to becoming a doctor or lawyer, or for that matter, getting an MA in, say, History. I never really saw it as other than a glorified trade school, a necessary step in joining the librarian guild.

The most useful things I learned in library school weren't theoretical. But I did actually use some of the skills I picked up in taking classes in online searching. Granted, that material could have been learned outside a degree program. If you are going to go into technical services, especially cataloging, there is a lot of detail-oriented training you need to pick up. If you are going to go into reference work, it's useful to be familiar with major information sources for several subjects, before going on the market as a librarian.

Incidentally, a large number of library patrons seem to find it very hard to re-shelve books where they belong. What does it take to shelve a book correctly? Evidently, whatever it is, much of the public doesn't have it. I don't consider it a science myself.
