I got one in Venice Beach when I was 16. The scar still haunts me. Oh well, at least it wasn't an alien head tattoo or something.

So I had three piercings in my left ear: two in the lobe, and one up top in the cartilage. The cartilage one never healed, and one day two years after I had it done, I woke up with a gigantic throbbing. I had a ring in it, and somehow the cartilage had gotten so infected that it crawled up OVER AND AROUND the fucking ring, basically encasing it in swollen purple grossness. I went to a health center, where the nurse aspirated the shit out of it, and foul stinking liquid poured out of my ear and into my shoulder, and we took turns cutting the hoop with a pair of pliers and removing the ring in like 4 pieces. Never put it back in, never will pierce anything again.

I honestly have very little problem with one earring. Those ear plugs make me shudder. The other day there was this guy who had GIGANTIC ones. I think you could use it as a basket ball hoop and play a game. What the fuck is up with that? (I am obviously a very boring middle class woman, I know.)

BTW I have a *pistol* to make ear piercings. Anyone want to be a victim? I have never done it.

You should never get anything pierced with a gun. That's a recipe for disaster and situations just like Remy's.

LoL I just realized that I have 11 holes in my ears. I had two in the cartilage on each ear, three in one lobe and two in the other. I also have my tragus and conch done on my right ear. Those two and one of the extra holes plus the normal reg ones are the only ones I wear earrings in anymore though.

xx-post Not all piercings are disasters. Most of the 11 I mentioned are mostly closed up to the point where you can't even tell I ever had them.

If he ever does get anything done make sure it's at a reputable place and not at a piercing pagoda in the mall or anything.

As far as the 'left/right ear = gay' thing goes I remember reading (in some folklore journal I think) that there was no consistency. They mapped the l/r throughout the UK, and towns just a couple of miles apart had a different answer, as did kids a few years apart within the same community. I think left was the most common though, probably because of historic negativity associated with left.

I had earrings (plain steel hoops) for a little over a decade - roughly '94 or '95 (can't remember exactly) till about 2006-2007. Took 'em out one day, still have 'em in a jewelry box somewhere.

i had coupla hoops for several months in '92. a gf pierced them using the time-honored alcohol, ice, and a sewing needle method. looked pretty good iirc and even healed up just fine, but don't think i could quite pull them off in my old age

Actually I don't know why i said generally; I can't think of a single instance where a hoop earning didn't detract from a man's appearance.

Though that's not to say that, as a child of the 90's, I didn't think it was pretty much the coolest thing you could have. How badly the 8 year old me yearning for at least one earring.
