Popeye's, both because it feels like more of a commitment (and thus requires more rationalisation) and the rewards are greater.

Gukbe, Saturday, 13 August 2011 22:19 (fourteen years ago)

Wendy's cuz they have burgars and a dollar menu. But Popeyes' chicken ain't bad, sides are good, in fact everything is pretty good at Popeyes, but I am poor.

leave me alone, i was only zinging (rip van wanko), Saturday, 13 August 2011 22:55 (fourteen years ago)

Recently bought a $5 shrimp box at Popeyes, shrimp was much better than LJS. Glad to be posting in ILE Fast Food Thread #349587598673

Popeyes chicken tastes like rubber.

Mr. Snrub, Saturday, 13 August 2011 23:03 (fourteen years ago)

why are these the two you rationalize eating at

dayo, Saturday, 13 August 2011 23:14 (fourteen years ago)

popeyes until wendys BRINGS BACK THE FUCKING SUPER BAR

king of torts (strongo hulkington's ghost dad), Saturday, 13 August 2011 23:16 (fourteen years ago)

though i wouldn't eat at popeyes tbh. this a purely polemical vote.

king of torts (strongo hulkington's ghost dad), Saturday, 13 August 2011 23:16 (fourteen years ago)

a few years ago a new chain popped up in new orleans (where popeyes originated and is totally dominant) called "chicken box." they alternated between two slogans: "tastes like ya mama's!" and "new orleans' #2 chicken!"

understanding that popeyes was too strong to fuck with, chicken box eschewed sides (except for pale, limp, salt-and-peppered fries which i loved) and even drinks (except for big shot, a local brand of very VERY sweet fruit soda) in favor of opening up stores in really crappy neighborhoods and serving, no joke, 5 pieces of dark meat (which is all that was available) for $1.98. in 2005. also they were lit up like operating rooms and decked out in corner store-style bulletproof glass. and open 24 hours.

the chicken was perfectly good if one ate it really fast. this is in sharp contrast to popeyes where the chicken improves with age (to a point).

given the fucked up nature of NO socioeconomic population distribution, the fact that all chicken boxes were in crappy neighborhoods meant that they all got flooded and none ever reopened (in fact there is a church's chicken in hollygrove that was never even gutted).

that's the closest anyone's ever come to even denting popeyes' stranglehold on this city. kfc has just given up.

wendy's is fucking gross.

adam, Saturday, 13 August 2011 23:17 (fourteen years ago)

Dude, the Super Bar was awful. xpost

L.P. Hovercraft (WmC), Saturday, 13 August 2011 23:18 (fourteen years ago)

look, i've picked my cause. the quality of the super bar is irrelevant compared to sticking to my convictions.

king of torts (strongo hulkington's ghost dad), Saturday, 13 August 2011 23:18 (fourteen years ago)

the dif between wendys and similar fast food burger joints is pretty superficial, I think: the square burger, the presence of chili on the menu, the greenhouse windows favored by whoever drew up the architectural standards issued to franchisees in 1991. but popeyes chicken is genuinely a lot less gross and evocative of headless featherless fatass dr. moreau experiments than kfc is, to me...the fact that they do clinically depressed looking lil bowls of red beans and rice is just a bonus IMO

A B C, Saturday, 13 August 2011 23:23 (fourteen years ago)

what other fast food joints offer baked potatoes?

dayo, Saturday, 13 August 2011 23:26 (fourteen years ago)

^^

leave me alone, i was only zinging (rip van wanko), Saturday, 13 August 2011 23:27 (fourteen years ago)

yeah but i can make a baked potato at home. on the other hand, i don't own a deep fat fryer, hence homemade french fries will almost always be a crushing disappointment.

(if anyone knows of a place where they deep fry a baked potato, holler.)

king of torts (strongo hulkington's ghost dad), Saturday, 13 August 2011 23:28 (fourteen years ago)

I'd give you directions to my house but it's getting late

dayo, Saturday, 13 August 2011 23:30 (fourteen years ago)

so many years i have resisted buying the deep fat fryer.

king of torts (strongo hulkington's ghost dad), Saturday, 13 August 2011 23:31 (fourteen years ago)

Strongo, are you familiar with the mighty Jo Jo Potato? Deep-fried potato quarters -- they're big enough to have a baked potato texture on the inside, french fry texture on the outside.

L.P. Hovercraft (WmC), Saturday, 13 August 2011 23:56 (fourteen years ago)

jess you know you don't need a deep fryer to deep fry right?

balls, Saturday, 13 August 2011 23:58 (fourteen years ago)

wmc: 0_o

b: no, i know. it's just...it's a dark road i am better off not going down considering my diet in general.

king of torts (strongo hulkington's ghost dad), Sunday, 14 August 2011 00:13 (fourteen years ago)

i will rep for wendy's spicy chicken sandwich, their frosties, and their baked potatoes. their burgers are probably better than mcd's/bk, but i never order them.

dance cook (get bent), Sunday, 14 August 2011 00:23 (fourteen years ago)

their salads are ok too, but if i want a salad i'm not gonna go to wendy's for one.

dance cook (get bent), Sunday, 14 August 2011 00:24 (fourteen years ago)

popeye's has disappointed me the last few times i've gone. they were better when they were cheaper.

dance cook (get bent), Sunday, 14 August 2011 00:25 (fourteen years ago)

as a shameless burger joint addict i will rep for wendy's as easily the best of the ubiquitous chains

not as big a fried chicken enthusiast but when i do go that way i go to popeye's, if only because the closest kfc is incredibly slow and incompetent

some dude, Sunday, 14 August 2011 00:31 (fourteen years ago)

i have to say that living in baltimore kind of ruined fast food fried chicken for me. not that there's some stellar local chain, but the little shithole places dotted across the city were like the perfect drunk food ever at 2 a.m.

also one time this ancient guy in a really dapper all-white suit made me sing along with him to t-pain's "i'm in love with a stripper," which was playing LOUD on a car outside the joint. i just can't imagine that happening at a kfc that closes at 10.

king of torts (strongo hulkington's ghost dad), Sunday, 14 August 2011 00:34 (fourteen years ago)

cheapo ghetto fried chicken really is the best fried chicken.

dance cook (get bent), Sunday, 14 August 2011 00:35 (fourteen years ago)

Popeyes requires more commitment, but more payoff. I pass two Wendys to get to it. And it doesn't sit well afterward. But man is it tasty. The biscuits, the chicken, the riceandbeans, everything.

Wendy's has salads and dollar chicken sandwiches and frosties and baked potatoes and chili for a cold wet November day. I give them points for the ketchup dispenser, not forcing me to bite open little packets. They offer a solarium and I can still find franchises with the tables that have the 1910 Cheers opening credits people on it.

So Wendy's. It's my adopted favorite.

About the only thing I look forward to in DFW (aside from getting out obv) is the popcorn shrimp at Popeyes. Since the Gulf spill I've thought the shrimp has had an extra oomph even.

would hit a super bar though

fwiw this is p much untrue; currently they're serving unsweetened ice tea which is actually awesome (popeyes sadly only serves their disgustingly sweetened ice tea)

i was moving today so i managed 2 drive-thru experiences, tried each of these. the popeyes po boy was good, but i was happy to get a huge hug of unsweetened ice tea in a drive through during a downpour.

I don't eat fast food burgers (besides Five Guys I guess), and Wendy's chicken is meh. Popeyes fries >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> and their biscuits, plus their spicy wings make this NO CONTEST whatsoever.

dayo, Sunday, 14 August 2011 12:03 (fourteen years ago)

wendy's is really killing the frozen drive-thru treat these days -- have you looked at their dessert menu lately? they've got like a billion variations on the frosty now, as a shake, as a parfait, as a root beer float, etc. this time of year when i need to indulge in some kind of cold snack to cope w/ the heat a few times a week they're a godsend.

some dude, Sunday, 14 August 2011 12:09 (fourteen years ago)

i used to dig wendy's, but now that five guys is everywhere i see no point in continued wendy's patronage. otoh popeyes is the cream of the crop when it comes to fast food fried chicken, especially since you can get spicy fried chicken. the red beans & rice, fries, biscuits, onion rings all own, and they have strawberry soda at many hood locations. wendy's does get mega points for the persistent 80s decor & vibe though

also one time this ancient guy in a really dapper all-white suit made me sing along with him to t-pain's "i'm in love with a stripper," which was playing LOUD on a car outside the joint. i just can't imagine that happening at a kfc that closes at 10.

It is good to see this quiz obeys the golden rule: what polls in August, stays in August.

Aimless, Wednesday, 31 August 2011 01:26 (fourteen years ago)

can't think of a single reason i'd ever go out of my way to eat at a wendy's, maybe besides their shakes. popeyes at least has their cajun fries and biscuits which are both awesome. oh fuck sudden nostalgia overload: when i was in fourth or fifth grade, i would go to the mall occasionally to play star wars card game tournaments at a comic book store and my dad would buy me cajun fries from popeyes every time after i was done. HAPPIER TIME, etc

i had to drive my dad to the airport today and on the way back stopped at a rest stop off the turnpike and had some popeyes, perhaps unconciously inspired by this thread. it was greasy and terrible. when i left the rest stop, there was a cat on the sidewalk. he seemed clean and not mangy so i thought he probably had a home nearby, but i couldn't tell because he didn't have a collar. on the drive home i kept worrying about the cat.

dud for poeyes.

guys popeyes has come to the UK and the fried chicken sandwich is a certified hit. people absolutely lose their shit over it. can somebody explain this to me?? who tf cares about popeyes chicken? how did they achieve this?

Tracer Hand, Thursday, 30 December 2021 15:33 (four years ago)

Years of good word of mouth, months/years of clamor for them to please do a sandwich, months of anticipation once they announce they'll do a sandwich (I assume, I never saw an ad campaign thanks to cable cutting and adblockers), scarcity of it taking forfuckingever to get one because they apparently only cook 2-3 at a time, and finally it's a pretty damn good sandwich. The last one I got was below par but that's one miss in about six swings.

Maybe it’s the exoticism of a New Orleans themed fast food restaurant for you guys over there.

Like Nando’s is probably ubiquitous and prosaic for you but it’s still exotic and new over here in the US.

Like Nando’s is probably ubiquitous and prosaic for you but it’s still exotic and new over here in the US.

The town where I live has so many really good Portuguese chicken places that when I went to London and was brought to Nando's by locals raving about it, I was just kind of baffled, like, "OK, it's nice that you tried."

I like Popeye's chicken, but not the chicken sandwich. Wendy's spicy chicken sandwich is better.
