apparently this novel has blown up like crack in the 80s, but 'interestingly' ilx has yet to express an opinion

the guy in it seems like a real jag

He is, that's the point (of the book, anyway)...

The bit about the book that annoyed me was the usual thing of "the girl is a wonderful goddess, with human flaws that make her even more loveable" which I see in fillums all too often so no doubt it will be the same here.

Having said that, the book is pretty damn good for what it is. I did read "Starter for Ten" which was gorblimey bad but entertaining all the same.

Righto, all the literate ILXors now turn up and go "lol he liked the book".....

Thread inspired by the piece on the Today programme on Radio 4 this morning? Was weirdly synchronous if not!

ime if yr reading a book on the tube, its either this or the girl w/ the dragon tattoo

just sayin, Monday, 15 August 2011 08:31 (fourteen years ago)

oh they filmed that one already?

Again, another girl who is a etc. but at least this time you do feel like the guy is in totally over his head with her.

Whole chunks of that book were "yes, that happened to me but that's not what I did" eyebrow raising.

yeah. kind of a puff-piece!

people are complaining about anne hathaway being too pretty for this, but im not sure i 'get' david fincher's converse strategy of making rooney mara look awful for his 'dragon girl' film.

I'm embarrassed not to have read this so far, for a whole host of reasons, but there is never book three to complete the BUY THREE BOOKS FOR THE PRICE OF TWO offers where One Day usually features.

As a published writer who likes to support others like me in their effort to make a living, I really only ever buy books that are out of copyright/print from charity bookshops! Obviously, I get sent tons of titles for work but for something modern and mass produced, written by a friend or colleague, I'll buy it from the most local bookshop I can.

That's fair enough. I don't know the dude.

I did buy it new, btw.

I have not read this but I thought the objection was more to her wavering British accent in the trailer (warning: contains spoilers if you care about that kind of thing):

Not only has she found herself with a dead-end job in a Mexican restaurant,

Aaah this is the one that was filmed in my local Cuban restaurant.

the trailer is really corny

yeah. seems to give away a lot of plot too. and her accent is shit, though i can never suspend disbelief even when accents are apparently good. couldn't watch 'mildred pierce'.
