It looks absolutely amazing, in a "pits of hell" kind of way.

I'm looking at it on googlemaps, and it's surrounded by these really odd green folds, and I'm trying to work out if they're deep valleys or really steep hills. Guessing valleys because there appear to be resevoirs at the bottom of them?
― Aphex Twin … in my vagina? (Karen D. Tregaskin), Tuesday, 16 August 2011 14:28 (fourteen years ago)
anyway, as to why they don't just flood the mines ... mind you, i'm not an engineer so i don't know if what i am saying makes sense or not. but i'm thinking that either the fires are just too deep to be accurately reached/targeted, there are safety concerns regarding any nearby towns that are still inhabited, that there's still a lot of coal underneath the ground and flooding the mine may make it forever inaccessible.
― Friedrich das Wunderhahn hat den traurigen Clownporn sehr gern (Eisbaer), Tuesday, 16 August 2011 14:29 (fourteen years ago)
Is the resevoir Aphex Twin?
― I love obscure members of the Athrotheiria mammal genus and... (Latham Green), Tuesday, 16 August 2011 14:30 (fourteen years ago)
THEY CAN'T REACH IT NOW, EITHER. Plus the fires are poisoning the air and water!

― I love obscure members of the Athrotheiria mammal genus and... (Latham Green), Tuesday, 16 August 2011 14:40 (fourteen years ago)
I went through there twice on the bus (susquehanna trailways) earlier this year on the way to shamokin and back, and the bus does actually go right through the middle of the town. Also spent an afternoon in nearby Ashland
It was summer and while you could see bits of the steam coming out the ground the fact it was so hot and sunny meant that visually it didn't look like very much. I think if you are going to go it would be better to go in winter, or at least in the evenings
When i went to Ashland, i'd planned to walk the 2 miles to Centralia but I found Ashland itself to be a fascinating place to explore and didn't make it to Centralia

Wow, if you go on google Streetview on Highway 61, right by the intersection with "Highway 54 Destroyed" you can see smoke hanging in the air between Ashland and Centralia. Gonna take a look at the town itself if Streetview goes into it?
― Aphex Twin … in my vagina? (Karen D. Tregaskin), Tuesday, 16 August 2011 15:06 (fourteen years ago)
this region is also populated by a huge number of extravagant eastern european churches, both orthodox and ukrainian catholic
― colby, Tuesday, 16 August 2011 15:10 (fourteen years ago)
Bah, Centralia itself on Streetview is too rainy and foggy to tell what's fog and what's puffs of black smoke.

The U.S. state of Arizona has more places with the word "Hell" in their names than any other state of the United States.[1] In 1994, the U.S. Geological Survey listed 60 such place names. In comparison, Utah has only 46 such places, and California only 45.

The town is the inspiration for the 1991 cult film Nothing But Trouble, written by Dan Aykroyd.

xp
i think the video game 'story' was a lot different to the movie, ie there was no underground burning town as far as i can remember in the game. but the movie distinctly had a town that had underground fires. plus lots of other weird shit.
― Summer Slam! (Ste), Tuesday, 16 August 2011 22:50 (fourteen years ago)
looking at this on streetview now, it's pissing down with rain which makes it look even more creepy.
― Summer Slam! (Ste), Tuesday, 16 August 2011 22:51 (fourteen years ago)
ahhhhh
I never saw the movie!! I didn't realize there were so many difference. The game did have a lot of steam/fog stuff that looks similar but that's interesting.

I don't think there are enough open areas below ground to actually flood! It's kind of a barely-burning solid vein of coal that occasionally burns out enough to collapse an area or creates enough gases to pop open a crack where more oxygen can get in. I guess if you maybe shoved the entire town underwater for a week...
― mh, Wednesday, 17 August 2011 13:59 (fourteen years ago)
