there is also http://www.70000tons.com/artists.htm

Armand Schaubroeck Ratfucker, Wednesday, 17 August 2011 16:40 (fourteen years ago)

Iirc, it was the latter than the always awesome regular Rolling Metal contributor Adrien was on.

jon /via/ chi 2.0, Wednesday, 17 August 2011 16:52 (fourteen years ago)

the barge to hell 2012 line-up is supposedly heavier and more extreme than the 70000 tons of metal line-up, but the bth hasn't been announced so who knows who will be playing. I did read rumours Immortal and Darkthrone but that might just be speculation.
The 70000 tons looks to be power metal/folk metal judging by the bands announced so far. Dont like any of the bands on that bill tbh.
Maybe catering to different styles is a good thing but its crap for those booked on 70000 tons if they prefer the other line-up when its announced. Then again its still a cruise.

Armand Schaubroeck Ratfucker, Wednesday, 17 August 2011 16:59 (fourteen years ago)

I'm pretty sure I read about an indie cruise too somewhere a few months ago. Maybe these cruises will be the next thing?

Armand Schaubroeck Ratfucker, Wednesday, 17 August 2011 17:01 (fourteen years ago)

Anyone ever been on a real cruise? Always liked the idea of a cruise round the world.

Armand Schaubroeck Ratfucker, Wednesday, 17 August 2011 17:03 (fourteen years ago)

Weezer is doing a cruise too, iirc.

This is a pretty good recap of the 2011 70000 tons cruise.

jon /via/ chi 2.0, Wednesday, 17 August 2011 17:05 (fourteen years ago)

I've always wanted to go on a cruise around the world, or at least across the Atlantic, but it would have had to have been taken about 70 years ago to live up to my romantic ideal. The thought of spending 7 days stuck on a cruise ship doing the types of things they show in modern cruise ads are enough to give me pause though.

jon /via/ chi 2.0, Wednesday, 17 August 2011 17:06 (fourteen years ago)

Extreme metal cruises are almost as unbearably poignant as like dachshund enthusiast cruises. I like the idea that they exist, but the thought of being on one just kind of -- I dunno. Can you imagine waking up, stretching, and then going to eat pancakes for breakfast in a big hall full of people who have the same subcultural interests? It's like camp for adults. On a boat.

it was pleasant and delightful, just like (La Lechera), Wednesday, 17 August 2011 17:07 (fourteen years ago)

Much preferred to sitting next to a couple from suburban Ohio who can't stop talking about how "awesome" America's Got Talent is, tbrr.

jon /via/ chi 2.0, Wednesday, 17 August 2011 17:09 (fourteen years ago)

Oh god, indeed. I just don't really like traveling with groups, I guess.

it was pleasant and delightful, just like (La Lechera), Wednesday, 17 August 2011 17:10 (fourteen years ago)

You could get room service! ;)

Armand Schaubroeck Ratfucker, Wednesday, 17 August 2011 17:10 (fourteen years ago)

I'm just saying, I'm more likely to enjoy any travelling situation where I can bond with the bearded bro next to me about how fantastic YOB is.

jon /via/ chi 2.0, Wednesday, 17 August 2011 17:11 (fourteen years ago)

I did a cruise last year! Puerto Rico, Curacao, Aruba, Dominica, St. Thomas; it was fucking great and I recommend it to anyone and everyone.

DALEKS OF GOD (DJP), Wednesday, 17 August 2011 17:11 (fourteen years ago)

How was the metal, tho?

Cuius regio, eius radicchio (Michael White), Wednesday, 17 August 2011 17:12 (fourteen years ago)

A Supposedly Punk Thing I'll Never Do Again

Lee626, Wednesday, 17 August 2011 17:13 (fourteen years ago)

also tbrr there is like zero need to talk to anyone else if you don't really want to

also, since the cruise left from Puerto Rico, at least a third of the passengers were from the islands and no one I met had enough free time on their hands to talk about "America's Got Talent", so the scenario jon is talking about basically is never going to happen unless you initiate it yourself; basically everyone wants to know which onboard activities you've done and what you saw at the ports of call

DALEKS OF GOD (DJP), Wednesday, 17 August 2011 17:14 (fourteen years ago)

I would love to go on cruises. Alaska would be my first choice, while there are still glaciers to look at.

A "musique actuelle" cruise would be cool -- buncha laptop jockeys and improvisors trying to play along with the drone of the engines.

L.P. Hovercraft (WmC), Wednesday, 17 August 2011 17:16 (fourteen years ago)

Haha, I was just projecting based on my irl experiences with fellow day trip travellers during our honeymoon. Being trapped on a bus with some of those people for hours at a time was the only downside to an otherwise wonderful week in Costa Rica.

jon /via/ chi 2.0, Wednesday, 17 August 2011 17:16 (fourteen years ago)

i have never taken a cruise but i have hung out in a timeshare and it was AWESOME

high five gettin oldsters!

I dream of vodka sandwich (jjjusten), Wednesday, 17 August 2011 17:16 (fourteen years ago)

we had a bad tour bus full of complainers in Aruba, but in fairness we didn't really need the tour guide to show us Aruba's new Home Depot so I understood where the frustration came from

other than that, we were too psyched to be in awesome places to let something as trivial and unimportant as other people ruin it

DALEKS OF GOD (DJP), Wednesday, 17 August 2011 17:19 (fourteen years ago)

dan what onboard activities are there?

Armand Schaubroeck Ratfucker, Wednesday, 17 August 2011 17:21 (fourteen years ago)

I'm not saying it ruined our experience at all! I'm just saying the experience would have been elevated from ridiculously awesome to super-extra ridiculously awesome if I'd have had like-minded people to bond with.

jon /via/ chi 2.0, Wednesday, 17 August 2011 17:21 (fourteen years ago)

btw what is your idea of hell a cruise with people talking about americas got talent/cruise with bands/an ILXors cruise ?

Armand Schaubroeck Ratfucker, Wednesday, 17 August 2011 17:22 (fourteen years ago)

If you are asking about those options I would rank as follows, from best to worst idea of a good time:

1) ILXors cruise
2) bands cruise
3) America's Got Talent cruise (personal hell)

jon /via/ chi 2.0, Wednesday, 17 August 2011 17:24 (fourteen years ago)

I'm just a real loner, I guess. Traveling with a group at all makes me kinda queasy.
However, ILXor cruise sounds tolerable because of high concentration of loners and decent ppl.

it was pleasant and delightful, just like (La Lechera), Wednesday, 17 August 2011 17:27 (fourteen years ago)

oh god http://www.boyziimencruise.com/

Armand Schaubroeck Ratfucker, Wednesday, 17 August 2011 17:27 (fourteen years ago)

It really is becoming a thing

There are all sorts of themed cruises out there on the high seas: right-wing cruises, left-wing cruises, alumni cruises, jazz cruises. This December there’s a Rock Legends Cruise, featuring George Thorogood and ZZ Top. Last month, Carnival hosted a Boyz II Men “love cruise.” Lynyrd Skynyrd’s Simple Man Cruise took place in January. Kid Rock does cruises through Carnival, too; the next one starts April 7.

Armand Schaubroeck Ratfucker, Wednesday, 17 August 2011 17:28 (fourteen years ago)

imagine a cruise with right wing or left wing nutters?

Armand Schaubroeck Ratfucker, Wednesday, 17 August 2011 17:29 (fourteen years ago)

dan what onboard activities are there?

It depends on the ship/cruise line afaik; we were on a Royal Caribbean boat with a movie theater and a stage, so every day they had several movie showings and after dinner every night there was some type of show (comedians, singers, bands... varied every night, with different levels of success). There was a bar practically around every corner as well as two adult pools, a kiddie pool, two sit-down restaurants, one eternal buffet, a video arcade, a nightclub, a half basketball court, a climbing wall, a library, a casino, a shopping mall and a pool hall. In addition to the amenities, they would have little mini shows/activities constantly, stuff like dancing lessons, karaoke sessions, newlywed game-type shows, informational sessions about the next port of call, random sporting competitions (the water polo tournament and the Caribbean dance competition were the two big winners in my book, esp since there were a ton of young adults from the Caribbean on the cruise who just owned the dancing).

I just had an insanely great time.

DALEKS OF GOD (DJP), Wednesday, 17 August 2011 17:29 (fourteen years ago)

would a left wing cruise mean everyone has to make their own dinner and get their own drinks?

Armand Schaubroeck Ratfucker, Wednesday, 17 August 2011 17:30 (fourteen years ago)

....and suddenly, just like that, an America's Got Talent cruise doesn't sound so bad

jon /via/ chi 2.0, Wednesday, 17 August 2011 17:30 (fourteen years ago)

a shopping mall!?!?

it was pleasant and delightful, just like (La Lechera), Wednesday, 17 August 2011 17:30 (fourteen years ago)

well someone just mentioned the kid rock cruise so xxxxposts

I dream of vodka sandwich (jjjusten), Wednesday, 17 August 2011 17:30 (fourteen years ago)

dan that sounds fantastic

Armand Schaubroeck Ratfucker, Wednesday, 17 August 2011 17:30 (fourteen years ago)

would a left wing cruise mean everyone has to make their own dinner and get their own drinks?
would vastly prefer this tbh!

it was pleasant and delightful, just like (La Lechera), Wednesday, 17 August 2011 17:30 (fourteen years ago)

the shopping mall was kind of a combination of gift store/convenience store/liquor store/high end jewelry store; it was kind of hilarious in that you could go buy some toothpaste and deodorant next to the counter selling Movados and Rolexes

DALEKS OF GOD (DJP), Wednesday, 17 August 2011 17:32 (fourteen years ago)

and on the way you could grab a bottle of practically any type of booze that struck your fancy

all duty-free btw

DALEKS OF GOD (DJP), Wednesday, 17 August 2011 17:32 (fourteen years ago)

oh there was also a paired set of running lanes around the upper deck that was... either a quarter or a third of a mile? long

DALEKS OF GOD (DJP), Wednesday, 17 August 2011 17:33 (fourteen years ago)

warning for timeshare enthusiasts - the bars close really goddamn early because timeshares are for old old people i guess

I dream of vodka sandwich (jjjusten), Wednesday, 17 August 2011 17:33 (fourteen years ago)

pro-tip for cruise enthusiasts - the bars stay open until at least 1 because your ass isn't going anywhere, you're on a boat

also, depending on the boat, you can buy neverending soda packages and then smuggle booze into your room, thus allowing yrself afterparty fodder

DALEKS OF GOD (DJP), Wednesday, 17 August 2011 17:35 (fourteen years ago)

Top stamp earners were entered to win a Pre-Book on JC 10 - just for doing the right thing! Tasks for the program include offsetting your carbon, contributing to the auction by donating an item or making a bid, participating in a Positive Legacy service project, attending the Panel DIscussion, and volunteering for a shift with Greening or Positive Legacy. Look for an expanded Conscious Cruiser Program on Jam Cruise 10 with announcements coming throughout the year.

See you on the ship Conscious Cruisers...

the father's girlfriend told the newspaper that he was only "roughhousing" with his son as he often does and regretted his "stupid" judgment.

Easily done, the amount of children i've thrown over cliffs and into the sea while "roughhousing".
