Will put in my vote for Sally Field, tv Gidget. I watched day after day of Gidget on tv during the summer when I was in middle school.

I wouldn't say Gidget was a badass, she was kind of a cupcake, but she did love to surf and was pretty committed to being defiantly herself.

If you have a seething hatred of Gidget, please share itt as well. I can see how her chipper attitude might grate on some people. I mean, she doesn't have a lot of edge to her, and mostly she's an overeager little sister type, I guess? I don't know because I don't have a little sister, but that's more or less how everyone treated her. Oh, GIDGET (eyeroll).

Also -- why did her dad always seem so OLD? I remember him seeming like he was super ancient.

Gidget is a 1959 Columbia Pictures CinemaScope feature film.[1][2] It stars Sandra Dee, Cliff Robertson, and James Darren in a story about a teenager's initiation into the California surf culture and her affiliated romance with a young surfer. The screenplay was written by Gabrielle Upton, a nom de plume of Gillian Houghton who was then head writer of the soap opera The Secret Storm. It was based upon Frederick Kohner's 1957 novel Gidget, the Little Girl with Big Ideas. The film was directed by Paul Wendkos. Gidget was the precursor to the "beach party film" genre and was followed by two sequel films, various television series, several telemovies, and the spoof Psycho Beach Party. According to IMDB Don Porter was 53 when the series began. Assuming Gidget is about 16 (not sure?) he would have been 37 when she was born. Old-ish I guess, but that's the age I was when I had my first kid.

Her dad was clearly from a very different era, I guess? I don't think 37 (or even 53) is all that old NOW, I just did when I was 11. He seemed "old" in comparison to the zany teens on the show

My mom was around the same age as Gidget and I remember her telling me that she always drastically preferred tv Gidget because she was more independent and spirited; she felt that movie Gidget was "a drip" but tv Gidget was smarter and more fun. She never liked Annette Funicello either.

They were showing Gidget re-runs here for a while and I couldn't deal with Sally Field. Everything was the end of the world with her. tv Gidge needs some perspective. Liked her friend though.

Her love life is defunct—unless you believe my brother in law who figures Larue is sublimating with horses. She works at this crummy stable all the time and rides the horses of people who board them there. It doesn't cost her a nickel.[1]

It was really well done (and extreeeemely graphic) for a tv movie.

Seconded--the mom is definitely on the short list of scariest characters ever. (Just watched it a month or two ago, and she was every bit as terrifying to me as when it first aired.)

Please note -- I like her in Imitation of Life and A Summer Place, but I just can't find it in my heart to prefer her cartoon Gidget to Sally Field's. There's something...soupy about her Gidget.

I recently saw Sandra Dee in The Dunwich Horror and was reminded of how much I don't like her. There's something about her upper lip that just makes me think that she's not really there, the things she's saying are just sounds coming out of her mouth. Well, her upper lip and the fact that she looks like one of the lesser Muppets.
