Why bother doing a poll -- the winner is the viewer of either Gidget, as they both radiate an excess of their very own charm.

Will put in my vote for Sally Field, tv Gidget. I watched day after day of Gidget on tv during the summer when I was in middle school.

I wouldn't say Gidget was a badass, she was kind of a cupcake, but she did love to surf and was pretty committed to being defiantly herself.

If you have a seething hatred of Gidget, please share itt as well. I can see how her chipper attitude might grate on some people. I mean, she doesn't have a lot of edge to her, and mostly she's an overeager little sister type, I guess? I don't know because I don't have a little sister, but that's more or less how everyone treated her. Oh, GIDGET (eyeroll).
Also -- why did her dad always seem so OLD? I remember him seeming like he was super ancient.

MOVIE GIDGET WIKI
Gidget is a 1959 Columbia Pictures CinemaScope feature film.[1][2] It stars Sandra Dee, Cliff Robertson, and James Darren in a story about a teenager's initiation into the California surf culture and her affiliated romance with a young surfer. The screenplay was written by Gabrielle Upton, a nom de plume of Gillian Houghton who was then head writer of the soap opera The Secret Storm. It was based upon Frederick Kohner's 1957 novel Gidget, the Little Girl with Big Ideas. The film was directed by Paul Wendkos. Gidget was the precursor to the "beach party film" genre and was followed by two sequel films, various television series, several telemovies, and the spoof Psycho Beach Party. Gidget received one award nomination.Gidget is credited by numerous sources (Stoked! A History of Surf Culture by Drew Kampion; The Encyclopedia of Surfing by Matt Warshaw; Riding Giants documentary film by Stacy Peralta - to name just three) as being the single main influence to bring surfing and the surfing subculture into the American mainstream.[3][4]

TV GIDGET WIKI
Gidget is an American sitcom about a surfing, boy-crazy teenager called "Gidget" and her widowed father Russ Lawrence, a UCLA professor. Sally Field stars as Gidget with Don Porter as her father. The series was first broadcast on ABC from September 15, 1965 through April 21, 1966. Gidget was among the first regularly scheduled color programs on ABC, but did poorly in the Nielsen ratings and was cancelled at the end of its first season. The show gained some popularity in summer reruns but too late to reverse its cancellation.

Also -- why did her dad always seem so OLD?
According to IMDB Don Porter was 53 when the series began. Assuming Gidget is about 16 (not sure?) he would have been 37 when she was born. Old-ish I guess, but that's the age I was when I had my first kid.

Yeah, me too.
― Mark G, Friday, 19 August 2011 15:02 (fourteen years ago)
Her dad was clearly from a very different era, I guess? I don't think 37 (or even 53) is all that old NOW, I just did when I was 11. He seemed "old" in comparison to the zany teens on the show

TV Gidget forever and ever.
― Johnny Fever, Friday, 19 August 2011 16:45 (fourteen years ago)
(though, in fairness to Sandra Dee, I don't know that I've ever seen the film.)
I haven't either but Sally Field was gorgeous in that
― Rob Based and DJ EZ God (DJP), Friday, 19 August 2011 16:48 (fourteen years ago)
My mom was around the same age as Gidget and I remember her telling me that she always drastically preferred tv Gidget because she was more independent and spirited; she felt that movie Gidget was "a drip" but tv Gidget was smarter and more fun. She never liked Annette Funicello either.
― it was pleasant and delightful, just like (La Lechera), Friday, 19 August 2011 17:24 (fourteen years ago)
They were showing Gidget re-runs here for a while and I couldn't deal with Sally Field. Everything was the end of the world with her. tv Gidge needs some perspective. Liked her friend though.

Larue? /q]
I called Larue who is my girlfriend across the street. Larue is one year older than I and in the possession of a genuine driver's licence as well as a jazzed up Ford vintage 1930. No kidding. She had inherited it from her mother who had driven it for sixteen years. It's a convertible with a new motor in it and beats a Cadillac any day. Some guy had offered her five hundred bucks for it but she had just looked down her nose at him—and she's got quite a long nose. Everything on Larue is long: her nose, her feet, her arms, her teeth, her fingernails, and when she had the mumps, it was the longest mumps on record. I often feel sorry for her. Her love life is defunct—unless you believe my brother in law who figures Larue is sublimating with horses. She works at this crummy stable all the time and rides the horses of people who board them there. It doesn't cost her a nickel.[1]

TamTam, you know that not only is it a drug for older ladies but Ms. Fields is also the spokesperson for said drug, right? Just checking because that definitely takes it to the next level.

Abbott and Sally Fields both have great Campbell Soup kid cheeks imo.

Which is to say that sometimes Abbs reminds me of SF.
Warning -- if you gis SF and "stay hungry" you will see a nsfw pic of SF
Lest this become a Sally Field appreciation thread, I also loved her in Sybil, aka the scariest movie ever made. http://www.achievement.org/achievers/fie0/photos/fie0-025a.gif

okay I had forgotten about all of the shit that actually happened to Sybil that caused her personality disorder, yikes

Seconded--the mom is definitely on the short list of scariest characters ever. (Just watched it a month or two ago, and she was every bit as terrifying to me as when it first aired.)

That movie does a really good job of presenting the experience from Sybil's perspective. Gidget, however, is not scary at all.

did gidget ever gain magic powers like pipi longstocking?
― Philip Nunez, Friday, 19 August 2011 19:53 (fourteen years ago)
Sandra Dee for sure!
― *tera, Friday, 19 August 2011 19:56 (fourteen years ago)
my mother and i had a longstanding pre-internet argument over whether Gidget was blonde (her belief) or brunette (my belief).

"did gidget ever gain magic powers like pipi longstocking?"
Yes, in The Flying Nun, the other TV series with a hot Sally Field.
― nickn, Friday, 19 August 2011 20:25 (fourteen years ago)
Tera, pls explain your preference for Sandra Dee -- you sound so convinced! Please note -- I like her in Imitation of Life and A Summer Place, but I just can't find it in my heart to prefer her cartoon Gidget to Sally Field's. There's something...soupy about her Gidget.

i always thought the flying nun was a wacky title, not that she really flew. like there wasn't an actual flying circus in monty python.
― Philip Nunez, Friday, 19 August 2011 21:05 (fourteen years ago)
I recently saw Sandra Dee in The Dunwich Horror and was reminded of how much I don't like her. There's something about her upper lip that just makes me think that she's not really there, the things she's saying are just sounds coming out of her mouth. Well, her upper lip and the fact that she looks like one of the lesser Muppets.
