tempted to vote for Alias here, as terrible as its later seasons have been (though that could probably be said for any of these shows)

Fringe - it can be a little bland and half-assed at times, but mostly enjoyable and getting better as it goes along too. Don't think I've heard of Undercovers.

Duane Barry, Sunday, 21 August 2011 15:32 (fourteen years ago)

they could bring back Lost for four more seasons of flashbacks to Jacob and his mom and it would still be the only right answer here, fuck a Fringe stan

some dude, Sunday, 21 August 2011 15:39 (fourteen years ago)

Lost was good to absolutely brilliant for five of its six seasons, but the ending still infuriates me so much so I'm tempted to vote for Alias instead. :/

I stopped watching Fringe after the first three episodes but my sister has just handed me the dvds of the first two seasons, swearing that it gets awesome. Still waiting til I'm in the mood for a marathon though.

Roz, Sunday, 21 August 2011 15:51 (fourteen years ago)

Definitely Fringe because, unlike Lost, its actually improved as its gone on.

jon /via/ chi 2.0, Sunday, 21 August 2011 17:06 (fourteen years ago)

I dropped Fringe at its midseason break the first year, at which point I understand it started to get really great. I'll find out someday if that's true, but I don't have the time right now.

Despite Lost's end, I still consider it one of my favorite tv shows ever because the homework each week as fun (and sometimes more so) than the actual episodes.

Johnny Fever, Sunday, 21 August 2011 17:10 (fourteen years ago)

Fringe goes on a monumental run of awesome episodes to open the third season (and season 2 is largely solid as well), but it heh petered out a bit to close the third season (due to JJ Abrams Plot Dangling Syndrome).

I remember watching the pilot for Felicity and being impressed that it snuck on a part of a Sarah McLachlan song where she swears, but otherwise being disappointed because it was nothing like Ally McBeal (which was how it was originally hyped, and, uh, I kind of watched Ally McBeal).

Lost was infuriating; one excellent season, and then it bought into its reputation too much and got too po-faced and unfun and unpulpy. Lots of meaningless signifiers, in the end.

I wrote my MA thesis on Alias, to my everlasting chagrin, because I never want to revisit that show again. Half an awesome season, and then it was all concatenations of phallic signifiers and obsessive self-parody, sort of the primal scene of Lost.

Never watched Undercovers.

Guess I'm going with Fringe.

But alack! The mood must have been spoiled by the impertinent girl from earlier, for the crowd of supporters grew hostile -- "Get eaten by a polar bear, chump!" -- and the producers quickly became defensive. "Oh yeah cool guy?" said the head executive producer. "It's easy for you to make fun of us in your cool socks."

The last season of Lost pissed me off to the extent that I would have a hard time recommending it to anyone as a worthwhile experience. Still, before the *actual* explanations (or non-explanations) came down the pike, the real value was in the interim fan speculation & that was hella fun - so Lost, then.

õ_Ò (Pillbox), Sunday, 21 August 2011 20:14 (fourteen years ago)

I watched all of Frings and all of Lost. Lost was an endless amount of cliffhangers and emoness with characters that I only cared about because there was so much character-building going on. Fringe wins easily

glad to know there's no character building in fringe!

balls, Monday, 22 August 2011 00:45 (fourteen years ago)

I mean characters like Sawyer and Hurley didn't need a bunch of character building to be well liked. But a bunch of other characters were only likable because of an endless amount of focus put on them. Fringe, otoh, has 3 main characters that are likable to begin with and all the character building with them is a bonus (in most cases)

like, since you're stuck with these people for so long they eventually become "family". That's all they got going for them. I probably shouldn't of even used "likable" to describe them all

Anna Trov's character being "likable to begin with" is such a totally ridiculous claim that i can rest easy with my decision to give up on Fringe

some dude, Monday, 22 August 2011 01:10 (fourteen years ago)

yeah any shot i had of ever watching fringe just went out the window

balls, Monday, 22 August 2011 01:13 (fourteen years ago)

Olivia is an everyman type character - relatable to strong but quiet types. and she is hot

and a terrible actress who probably would have never anchored a FOX show without familial connections to Rupert Murdoch

some dude, Monday, 22 August 2011 01:22 (fourteen years ago)

you shouldn't expect more acting than necessary from a strong but silent type character

some dude, Monday, 22 August 2011 02:09 (fourteen years ago)

At first I was like "I should vote for Felicity, even though maybe that's not my favorite", and now the more I've thought about it, the more I like Felicity more consistently than the others. Like, there were Aliases that I thought were really, really great, but then there were other Aliases that were not, so much, at all.

Plus Keri Russell

C-L, Monday, 22 August 2011 02:34 (fourteen years ago)

some dude, i couldn't bear to watch more than the first couple fringes when it aired but i went back and it was a lot more entertaining after that. i think anna torv gets better too.

i used to be down on how alias went in the later seasons, but i've rewatched it and it seems pretty solid. i think you just have to accept that for the most part things will just be permuted over and over.

am/sand (Lamp), Tuesday, 30 August 2011 02:37 (fourteen years ago)

i've never seen Alias but my brother stans for it, have been meaning to borrow his DVDs sometime

✇ ruehl (some dude), Tuesday, 30 August 2011 02:42 (fourteen years ago)

it has a lot of filler but theres a run from like mid season 1 to the end of season 3 thats by far the best tv work abrams has attached his name to

its really spotty after that but worth sticking out imo

of his other series ive only really tried to hang w/ fringe and it kinda seems to be following a similar pattern w/o ever getting as tight or addictive as alias and with waaaay worse supporting characters. and when fringe is bad (like most of the time) it is transparently awful garbage

am/sand (Lamp), Tuesday, 30 August 2011 02:47 (fourteen years ago)

two years pass...

My sister gave me his new book ("S." written with Doug Dorst) and I'm scared to open it... looks like total collector bait but then again it has a 30% off sticker on the Target shrinkwrap.

Tried to search for it on ILE/ILB, is it being talked about elsewhere? Or is it being intentionally ignored...

it's a good watch

nice to see them play with worlds and timelines, watch walter experiment, etc.

j., Sunday, 5 January 2014 05:40 (eleven years ago)

the first time you hit what feels like a fine ending, maybe just stop watching. the last season and change is almost totally inessential.

Simon H., Sunday, 5 January 2014 05:46 (eleven years ago)

the last season is inessential but pretty good if you ended up really loving the characters. The show was supposed to end at season four, so everything after that felt more like a victory lap. even then, s5 still had great episodes like the one with the pocket universe and the Monty Python/LSD episode.

Roz, Monday, 6 January 2014 03:27 (eleven years ago)

Simon and Roz OTM. It's really derivative for most of the first season, but then quickly starts mining its own awesome vein of SF, so stick with it if you're initially bored.

s5 still had great episodes like the one with the pocket universe

YES.

and the Monty Python/LSD episode

Was that season 5?

Neil Nosepicker (Leee), Monday, 6 January 2014 04:49 (eleven years ago)

Yep, Walter was trying to remember the password he used to hide the Observer kid. Not to be confused with the season 3 animated Inception/LSD episode.
