the home counties

think imma go kent on this one

thought it best to restrict it to the counties bordering greater london

east and maybe west sussex have a reasonable claim, but then one has to consider various other counties containing areas that are within the orbit of london, even though they may extend far beyond its hinterland

yeah sussex owns all of these, and i do sort of consider it an home county

but it... isn't

Would have voted Sussex. As it is, I don't really have enough feeling about any of these to vote. Anyone want to give a succinct rundown to jog my memory?

i think hertfordshire and surrey are the essential home counties

that isn't to say the best, but the closest to what would in ilx terms be 'the platonic ideal of the home county'

well in that case, surrey obv, with an infinite number of golf courses in its 642 square miles (and some of ilx's favourite tory mps)

i don't think i know anything about buckinghamshire, it probably has some really rough small towns that invalidate the commonly held notion that it's actually a utopian fantasy dreamed up by tim henman during an orange squash sugar rush

Herts is more Essex than Essex is.

Only been to the urban bits of Essex and Surrey, not great. Been to some pretty bits of Bucks.

Surrey is *the* Home County. What of Middlesex, the ghost county haunting the west of London. Poor Middlesex. Just a memory and a barely perceptible psychic barrier between London and non-London.

Brought up in S. Bucks, school in Berks. Just got back home to E1 from Rickmansworth this afternoon. It felt oddly idyllic, Herts it is.

The non-commutable parts of Essex and Kent can be lovely. Surrey is always full of awful people.
