http://blogs.wsj.com/marketbeat/2011/08/23/quake-hits-virginia-shakes-manhattan/
Mandatory market response time:
Treasurys are up a little bit, with the 10-year yielding 2.09%. That could also be due to a strong 2-year Treasury note, but the talk is that it’s at least partly because of the quake.
The stock market dipped just a teensy bit, but the Dow’s still up 175 points. The quake apparently shaved a little bit off the market.
They’ve evacuated the Pentagon and the Capitol Building in DC, so it is kind of a big deal.

Was getting manicure on ground floor of midtown building. Felt a mild swaying, like someone had leaned against my chair or something?? Didn't realize what it was until I walked outside and heard people talking about it, evacuating their buildings as an excuse to stand outside in the sunshine.

re: the Californians = dicks thing....i get it in some way, because it is rather novel on the east coast (i grew up in philly), but let's be honest— it wasn't that big a quake, and the amount of insanely shrill news coverage about it made me want to shoot all televisions and radios. also, some other major things happened in the news yesterday (LIBYA? HELLOOO) and all any news outlet could talk about was this teensy fucking earthquake that is a mere blip on peoples consciousnesses if they live on the west coast.
in short: i get why people were so excited and/or freaked out, but it didn't merit the amount of excitement/freakedoutness that it got. that is all.
(and btw, i was en route to baltimore, didn't feel a fucking thing. i never have felt one in my entire time in california, and we've had a few of this magnitude).

The news is going to be shrill about BS and people are going to be focused on spectacles of immediate interest to them and disregard matters of less gravity. It's not an excuse and it's not good, but then again, were the dickish Californians in question saying "How can these East-Coasters carry on about a trivial quake when big shit's going down in Libya and Syria!"?

Californians being dicks about 5.8 earthquakes in places that never get them.
god for real, but it's not just the novelty, it's the fact that people can live in not-california their entire lives (wtf, crazy i know) and then an earthquake happens. a lot of those people are going to spend the duration of the quake honestly scared for their lives and seriously freaked out afterwards.
when i was getting home from work yesterday about an hour afterwards, there was an older lady wandering aimlessly down the street with a blank look in her eyes, and she had her hands on her neck/cheeks area like she was holding herself. she told me "earthquake! they said 5.8!" and that she was too scared to go back into her house. i leave my house an hour later, and i see her AGAIN, walking down the same road in the same exact position.
today i talked to another older lady at a reception desk, i asked her how her day was going and she said she was feeling awful because she didn't get any sleep last night; she was up all night thinking about the earthquake. she was at least in her 70s and she had never experienced one before.
it's easy to be terrified bc even if it's obviously an earthquake, they're so unexpected here that your first eight thoughts might be about things that are a lot worse than earthquakes, like maybe aliens are lifting the building from the ground, or the USSR just dropped a bomb somewhere 30 miles away, or there's a giant shaking the building
so stop being a dick, california
