I think those baggy jeans will come back to haunt me. What are your fashion mistakes?

Hysteric Glamour (nathalie), Thursday, 9 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Acidwash jeans in the mid 80s

anthony, Thursday, 9 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I know that my willingness to take off my shirt all the time will come back to haunt me.

Ally, Thursday, 9 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Are you kidding? As someone who spent his formative years in the new wave early to mid 80's, I leave it to your imagination. I wish I had loaded up on Fiorucci shit, though; that stuff rocks.

curly laces. legwarmers. kiddie t-shirts worn by *adults*. "i went to romford and all i got was this lousy t-shirt",...

nathalie, Thursday, 9 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Probably crimped hair, but hey, it was the 80s and everyone walked around with what looked like wilting orchids on the tops of their heads.

Kate the Saint, Thursday, 9 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I walked around one summer in a Nehru jacket (with a paisley lining). As much as I drink I still can't forget it.

Steven James, Thursday, 9 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I used to wear a gold cornicello in proclamation of my heritage. If there were ever a female equivalent of the "guido", it would have been me. Good thing they didn't make pinstripes for ladies....

Kerry, Thursday, 9 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

You know what was really bad in the '80s? Plastic jelly shoes. I mean, they cut up your feet, wtf?

Ally, Thursday, 9 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Rainbow flecked trousers. Black trousers with white flecks = cool. Grey trousers with black flecks = cool. Any colour trousers with rainbow flecks = ridicule.

Had I worn all of my brother's late 70's gear in 1996 rather than 1986, I would have been seen as trendy and retro rather than a victim of hand-me-down evil.

My wife would point at my mismatched shoe phase, but I always ignore her when she says that.

Possibly the most embarassing thing I ever did to myself was to force a barber to give me a psuedo-futuristic haircut that made my head mushroom-shaped. Looking back at old pictures, I'm amazed I din't get any "dickhead" jokes from that one.

Shoulder pads! You couldn't enter a room without knocking someone down with'em!

nathalie, Thursday, 9 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Fat shoelaces with a checkerboard lace-weave! Zounds!

Tracer Hand, Thursday, 9 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Why did I always imagine Kerry was male?

Hmm ... female, Chicago, on IL* ... stalking ... stalking ...

Nitsuh, Thursday, 9 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Christ, those skinny ties with the piano keys on'em.

Steven James, Thursday, 9 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Many of my friends seem to think most of my cuurent clothes are fashion mistakes to rival my reversible duvet jumper with dalmations on it. E.g. fantastic long denim skirt with diamante studs and sort of bleach-dipped with a frayed bottom has been described as 'grotesque' and one mate refuses to go out with me if I'm wearing it. Also my great denim wedge sandals caused great mirth on Saturday despite the fact that they are blatantly lovely. I will be interested to see their reactions to today's jumper which is blue and sparkly with a low back and slashed batwing sleeves and is da bomb.

Emma, Friday, 10 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

i feel for you emma. David asks me if i am going to really wear that ecery time we go out.

anthony, Friday, 10 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'm not sure it was the shoes so much as their combination with those socks.

Richard Tunnicliffe, Friday, 10 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Look, the shoes rub my feet without socks and cause great pain and suffering. And besides, ankle socks are very fashionable right now. I thought men liked the schoolgirl look?

Emma, Friday, 10 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I was so sad that I was beyond fashion. I used to wear a grey trench coat all the time, with a PLO scarf. I wish I still had the PLO scarf, but the trench coat has long since been consigned to the outer darkness.

The Dirrrrty Vicar, Friday, 10 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Honestly, Emma, it just sounds like your friends have no sense of style. I mean, your clothes sound great, how did you get such dud friends? What do they wear, potato sacks?

Ally, Friday, 10 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

My fashion mistakes generally consist of being too dull.

I had a pair of awful brown pilgrimish shoes in middle school, though.

Skinny grey pants and grey jacket. Black shoes/belt/socks or brown shoes/belt/socks?

The eternal conundrum.

Bryan Fairy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 6 February 2014 03:07 (twelve years ago)

where are you going in this ensemble?

call all destroyer, Thursday, 6 February 2014 03:09 (twelve years ago)

budget hearing

Bryan Fairy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 6 February 2014 03:19 (twelve years ago)

so daytime event. i'd go with brown shoes/belt then, and socks in a muted, complementary color.

call all destroyer, Thursday, 6 February 2014 03:22 (twelve years ago)

I've worn brown shoes/belt with these pants w/out the jacket; I wondered if the jacket was the x-factor.

Bryan Fairy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 6 February 2014 03:26 (twelve years ago)

you say it's gray pants and a gray jacket, but it's not a suit? how do they match up?

call all destroyer, Thursday, 6 February 2014 03:27 (twelve years ago)

Yeah, not a suit: the sort of formal jacket that's not part of a suit. A Calvin Klein jacket w/pinstripe horizontal and vertical lines. It matches splendidly with the pants; I worry about the shoes, belt, and socks.

Bryan Fairy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 6 February 2014 03:33 (twelve years ago)

Dark gray or light gray?

, Thursday, 6 February 2014 03:35 (twelve years ago)

The pants and jacket are light gray.

Bryan Fairy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 6 February 2014 03:37 (twelve years ago)

I'd probably do brown

, Thursday, 6 February 2014 03:42 (twelve years ago)

yeah i swear this isn't my personal bias talking but brown all the way--it's a daytime event and the way you're describing the pants/jacket i think you need to dress them down slightly.
