I know this is a little specific but I just watched this on Netflix streaming, first time since I saw it on VHS a few years after release. I remembered Glover as being amazing in this movie. Now I can't tell whether he was amazing or ridiculous. Which is it?
(general classic/dudism regarding the movie itself also welcome, doesn't seem this has been done on ILX before)

Rivers Edge is classic, particularly if viewed as part of the Over The Edge -> River's Edge -> Twin Peaks, Tim Hunter continuum. Crispin Glover constantly skirts the boundary between the ridiculous and the amazing, and even though he occasionally fails in that tight rope walk, in general I find him to be classic too.

David Bordwell profiles RE director Tim Hunter's style, in that film and his subsequent TV work (Twin Peaks, Mad Men):

didn't see a dedicated Rivers Edge thread so I thought I'd put this curio here: in the comments on this thread about the case that inspired the movie, either 1) a bunch of people who were local teens at the time comment about their experiences with the case (and snipe at each other for how they behaved, and defend themselves), or 2) one or more people pretty convincingly play-act the above scenario

that thread is insane. I like all the people claiming that Hollywood was exploiting the real case for money. I had no idea the movie semi-based on a true story, and kind of doubt that it was marketed that way.

it was famously not marketed at all

i just discovered that the actual incident that inspired the movie happened in the county where I grew up ... i knew it was based on something that actually happened, but i had thought it was the midwest somewhere
