Kimchi!

TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Tuesday, 30 August 2011 16:27 (fourteen years ago)

I am the biggest advocate for Huevos Rancheros in the U-fucking-K. Seriously. Fry up those onions, lay on the peppers, shit load of chili and wack in dem eggs and you have a hangover DESTROYER!!!

Chilaquiles!

i drive a wood paneled station dragon (La Lechera), Tuesday, 30 August 2011 16:28 (fourteen years ago)

I too would like some alternatives though - HR is a firm favourite in our household, but yeah, any other spicy breakfast meals are most welcome. Nice one Jed.

been on a spicy chicken biscuit sandwich from Chik-Fil-A lately

i have never ever eaten kedgeree. i don't think i even knew it was spicy. there must be more mexican ones than H-R and surely loads of Indian ones.

jed_, Tuesday, 30 August 2011 16:31 (fourteen years ago)

My personal favorite spicy breakfast has no official name, but it's an omelette with spinach and a little cheese inside, avocado slices and hot sauce on top. You could also do this as a scramble if you prefer.

xp i said CHILAQUILES

HR double thumbs up here for personal breakfast/hangover treat favorite. I make fellow londoners it when they are staying at mine on my sofa (this is how I make up for having one of the worst sofas to sleep on in the world).

I used to get these big omelette things that were chilli, fried potatoes, peppers, onions, garlic, tomato, bacon and cheese (they had many variations) and all held together by eggs (which I think had cream in them too) at some place nr or in Nashville. I recreate them all the time. Huge amounts of tabasco too.

owenf, Tuesday, 30 August 2011 16:32 (fourteen years ago)

do you mean like a spanish omlette/totilla syle or a quick cook french style omlette?

jed_, Tuesday, 30 August 2011 16:36 (fourteen years ago)

menudo

kate78, Tuesday, 30 August 2011 16:40 (fourteen years ago)

of course the classic slacker's spicy breakfast is cold take away curry from the night before which can be amazing.

someone was telling me about chilli muffins but i've never had them.

jed_, Tuesday, 30 August 2011 16:42 (fourteen years ago)

Masala chai, of course.

as in British biscuits or Southern style?

owenf, Tuesday, 30 August 2011 17:09 (fourteen years ago)

southern!

kate78, Tuesday, 30 August 2011 17:17 (fourteen years ago)

I was going to say. You could probably only get away with putting jalepenos and cheese on a bourbon if you were Scottish

owenf, Tuesday, 30 August 2011 17:33 (fourteen years ago)

i'm scottish i do that all the time. i'm gonna make this spicy omlette!

jed_, Tuesday, 30 August 2011 17:38 (fourteen years ago)

lately when i have a quiet sat morning and can be bothered, i make a sort of bastardised patatas bravas type thing that basically is:

-chop some potatoes v small and boil them, set aside, amount depends how hungry you are. i leave the skins on but it's up to you.
-chop about a third or half a chorizo into rounds or however size you like them.
-fry the potatoes in oil, add paprika/cayenne/chilli powder/salt/pepper
-add the chorizos when the potatoes are done (be patient, takes a while for them to brown and go crispy)
-at some point near the end fry an egg or two in a separate pan and plonk the egg/eggs on top of the potatoes and chorizo...
-add hot sauce plus a bit of mayo on the side is good...
-if you have any rocket or other salad and a few tomatoes and you're treating this as "the meal you eat at 1400 on a sat when you're unsure of the next time you'll eat" then add that too, or if you want to bulk it up to serve to others.

you'll find you get better at syncing it all and just generally balancing the cooking times so everything tastes well together.

do you have a recipe/method or is it just throw in whatever you feel like kinda thing? xposts

jed_, Tuesday, 30 August 2011 17:42 (fourteen years ago)

for the omlette, i mean.

jed_, Tuesday, 30 August 2011 17:43 (fourteen years ago)

as a tortilla with some soy chorizo and cornbread

Mostly I throw whatever I have in there -- I'm not much of a recipe user, just look at what I have and make stuff. The above was my "Sunday night remains" dish with bits and pieces of other things I made over the weekend.

i drive a wood paneled station dragon (La Lechera), Tuesday, 30 August 2011 17:44 (fourteen years ago)

also making your own refried beans is a nice way to give yourself a spicy breakfast...and buy breakfast chorizos or other spicy breakfast sausages. i love this type of breakfast so much

LocalGarda, Tuesday, 30 August 2011 17:45 (fourteen years ago)

all this stuff looks amazing, garda's sounds great too.

(are la lechera and owenf posting from the same place?)

jed_, Tuesday, 30 August 2011 17:46 (fourteen years ago)

would you go for a cooked salsa or a raw one for Huevos R? i think i've had it both ways.

jed_, Tuesday, 30 August 2011 17:50 (fourteen years ago)

I poach my eggs into the tomato sauce, so warm every time

Sonny Chevrotain (dog latin), Tuesday, 30 August 2011 17:58 (fourteen years ago)

With some bell peppers and sriracha

This is why I take pictures -- I'm not one to write things down, but if I have a photo archive I can remember what I've made and try to recreate with available ingredients. I usually roast the tomatillos and garlic, then make salsa with that. Or just

Lots of spicy Sambar with plenty of Idlis. South Indian breakfast. My preferred breakfast.

mmmm, Tuesday, 30 August 2011 21:01 (fourteen years ago)

Scrambled eggs + chorizo as a taco filling with some sliced avocado and sour cream and a bit of salsa.

Melissa W, Tuesday, 30 August 2011 21:23 (fourteen years ago)

masala dosa for breakfast is great, if you plan ahead (the batter is sort of like ethopian injera, you have to start it the day before)

geeta, Tuesday, 30 August 2011 22:14 (fourteen years ago)

anyone got tips for the right tomatoes (or prep?) for salsa. The stuff I make tastes like the real deal but there's a water element that's always there that is keeping me from raising the bar.

owenf, Wednesday, 31 August 2011 23:22 (fourteen years ago)

i always recommend rick bayless salsa recipes -- super easy, covers all necessary bases

i have been thinking of a cilantro-jalapeno bloody mary for a minute

elmo argonaut, Wednesday, 31 August 2011 23:54 (fourteen years ago)

damn son now i'll be thinkin baout that too

Aerosol, Thursday, 1 September 2011 00:00 (fourteen years ago)

Yeah I'm in the raw salsa game. Might be a British thing. I know I have to make do with big supermarket onions rather than american style white onions (not quite as oniony when raw).

owenf, Thursday, 1 September 2011 00:32 (fourteen years ago)

man this thread is making me hungry. this morning i had eggs w/ salsa in 'em, which is something i do a lot -- i have some jalapenos in the house that i think i'll put in there next time.

favorite non-mexican spicy breakfast is sausage and hominy with chili sauce
