(insert team name here) won't win the premiership 2002/2003

I feel like we need a new footie thread, last night's game from Ewood Park was a cracker, real end-to-end stuff, with a lot of good football on show. Liverpool looked excellent (poor defending for equaliser excepted) but then so did Blackburn, in particular Duff and Dunn.

Will this be tightest premiership ever? (as per Richard Keys last night) Andy Gray seems to think so.

Who do you think will win it?

Feel free to also talk about the lower leagues, especially as Chesterfield have won three in a row now.

chris (chris), Thursday, 29 August 2002 09:31 (twenty-three years ago)

I think Manchster United will win it.

Have Spurs signed Robbie Keane yet?

jel -- (jel), Thursday, 29 August 2002 09:34 (twenty-three years ago)

not yet, and time is running out.....

chris (chris), Thursday, 29 August 2002 09:39 (twenty-three years ago)

Barcelona FC!!! I just could not cope with it. Fingers crossed that they will be fooled into signing Ronaldo and head into some final desestabilization of the team. And saving Real from similar consequences, btw

Arantxa, Thursday, 29 August 2002 11:08 (twenty-three years ago)

Van Gaal gave an unusally lengthy pitchside interview after last night's match. Not only did he manage to restrain himself from shouting at the interviewer (so nervous he dropped his earpiece), he actually talked nothing but sense. Is he lulling me into a false sense of security? I mean, I like the bloke, but up until now it has been because of the entertainment value of his outbursts, but I found myself entranced last night. So yes, I think they will win.

I know it's not the Premiership, but it is a lower league, geographically at least.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Thursday, 29 August 2002 11:18 (twenty-three years ago)

Who wants the Premiership when you can get la Liga? I mean, teams which are not able to win la Liga are able to win the Championship's League...

However, geographically, the lowest of the low would be Gibraltar. They should be playing some proper UK league, are they?

arantxa, Thursday, 29 August 2002 12:47 (twenty-three years ago)

Manchester United will NOT win it.

They will finish 4th behind Newcastle, Arsenal, Liverpool in ascending order.

Venga, Thursday, 29 August 2002 13:15 (twenty-three years ago)

Who wants the Premiership when you can get la Liga?

I've been thinking that myself lately. Really should watch more of the coverage over here (such as it is!).

Gillingham will not win the Premiership. This follows seeing as they are not in it.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 29 August 2002 14:06 (twenty-three years ago)

Like most people, I can't see anyone outside last year's top three winning it - and Arsenal look the best so far. The only other sides I can see having an outside chance are Leeds, Newcastle and (if they sign Morientes and get Crespo on loan, implausible as these are, and their best midfielders can stay fit, which may be even less likely) just maybe Tottenham. WBA and Birmingham to be relegated by a good margin.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Thursday, 29 August 2002 16:26 (twenty-three years ago)

so Spurs finally agree a deal for Keane (*a good signing considering their strike force is shit at the mo)

Sunderland sign not one but two strikers (Stewart and Flo), but will they score owt?

and poor poor Jari goes to a team that will appreciate his talents, Omar, if you're still reading congratulations, you've got your man.

chris (chris), Friday, 30 August 2002 11:35 (twenty-three years ago)

Barbary Apes v. Humans. The apes always win.

MarkH, Friday, 30 August 2002 11:43 (twenty-three years ago)

Gibraltar are probably in a similar situation to Andorra, who I saw playing Castelldefels here last year. One or two of their players were verging on the rotund. A little boy asked me if I was from Andorra, so I twatted him. For those of you who missed it, Castelldefels have made history by reaching the third division for the first time. Thrid division of what, I don't know, but there's a big sign up at their crappy ground, which is next to the railway station car park.

The barbary apes have been known to scurry off up the rock with the ball, the wee tinkers.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Friday, 30 August 2002 16:59 (twenty-three years ago)

how is keane gonna help at tottenham.. they need a cutthroat 20goal striker! idiots. ah well just so long as it sees sir les returning to QPR...

also: gerard houllier smokes crack. having wrecked litmanen, he can now concentrate on ignoring the excellent cheyrou. can't wait to see how he fucks around with le tallec next season!

as for omar: litmanen's good, but he ain't no nando rafael! haha!

bob zemko (bob), Friday, 30 August 2002 18:49 (twenty-three years ago)

Cheyrou has to get past Gerrard and Hammann at the moment, arguably the best central midfield pairing in the Premiership. He did win a penalty against Southampton last week though.

As for Ajax, what about free-scoring Midu???

Today's premiership results have been odd, Sunderland hold Manyoo (Keane sent off teehee), Birmingham beat Leeds and Boro beat my dark horse tips Blackburn, quite quite odd.

We won't talk about Chesterfield losing to the bloody Hatters.

chris (chris), Saturday, 31 August 2002 14:41 (twenty-three years ago)

Ah, so here you all are.

Premiership: Spurs won't win it. Hoho...the risk I'm taking with this prediction. :)

Liga: Barca and Real won't win it. Barca because they're a joke in defense. Real alas will not win it because they're entranced with their own genius and that means too many points lost against teams like Real Sociedad. It's Deportivo's year again. Real - Deportivo this season will be sheer madness: the ultimate passing game.

Ajax will win it though. [begins chanting] Litmanen woohhhoooo Litmanen whooohhhoohhoo! [ends] Oh I can't wait for the next home game... yeah Mido, he's good although he's had a bit of slow start this season. Looks distracted. Probably will be playing in England next season.

Omar, Saturday, 31 August 2002 15:20 (twenty-three years ago)

cheyrou ON THE LEFT obv. riise fullback.

and my, doesn't that young stephen wright look good? some big club should sign him.

bob zemko (bob), Saturday, 31 August 2002 16:41 (twenty-three years ago)

Congratulations to West Brom and Birmingham City, if they're reading.

Ronaldo for Real Madrid... I reckon they'd sign Mr Blobby if enough people told them he was the best player in the world.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Sunday, 1 September 2002 08:17 (twenty-three years ago)

English Premiership (bar Blackburn) has been a Man-Utd/Arsenal duopoly, and despite Liverpool's challenge I expect the same with the gooners top dogs this time. Newcastle's Hugo Viana to be a HUGE star(the boys a genius).

The Netherlands - Ajax, espec now Litmanen is back. Mercifully Sparta Rotterdam cannot be relegated out of the Gouden Gids Divise no matter how many matches are lost this season.

stevo (stevo), Sunday, 1 September 2002 09:46 (twenty-three years ago)

Barca were depressingly#, hilariously predictable last night. Beautiful football going forward (until it cam to actually shooting) but hapless in defence, Atletico Madrid (with that fat bastard Gil in the stands looking ever-so-punchable) should have been battered into next week, instead they get a draw!! Mr Miller I need reports of Van Gaal's post match interview, I fear it may have been hilarious.

Arsenal yesterday didn't look particularly fantastic though, and neither did Chelsea, in fact it was a terrible game, hopefully tonight's will be better.

chris (chris), Monday, 2 September 2002 08:14 (twenty-three years ago)

and, after reading the observer sport monthly interview with Roy Keane I have to re-stress that he is an unbalanced, unpleeasant bastard. But the photo of him on the cover with the Raven skull is very very good.

chris (chris), Monday, 2 September 2002 08:47 (twenty-three years ago)

Chris, I only caught a brief snippet of Van Gaal's post-match press conference and he was talking (or not talking) about Puyol's injury. He didn't look very happy, I have to say. That new goalie looks crap. I don't know why Gil is out of jail, I must have missed something there.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Monday, 2 September 2002 17:59 (twenty-three years ago)

instead they get a draw!!

boohoo...so they thought they were just going to win la liga with no defense and a new kid on goal. Fools the lot of them.

Omar, Tuesday, 3 September 2002 05:40 (twenty-three years ago)

AFC Wimbledon for the Combined Counties League title?

No. Too many points lost in the first half of the season as they struggle to get a team together that really plays like a team, and which utilises all the best players.

Still, we're not doing badly considering we've only ever played a dozen or so games!

Mark C, Tuesday, 3 September 2002 09:18 (twenty-three years ago)

This is going around per e-mail, no idea who wrote it. Not bad I'd say.

Roy Keaneian Rhapsody

Mama, just kicked a man.
There's a screw loose in my head,
Because I tried to break his leg,

Fergie, the seasons just begun,
But now I've gone and thrown it all away!

Forlan! Ooh -ooh - ooh,
Makes me want to sigh!
We'd score more goals with Sid James or Kenneth Williams,
Carry On, Camping,
The whole teams just in tatters.

Too late, my crime is done,
Tried to mangle Alfie's spine,
Now he's aching all the time,

Goodbye Mick McCarthy, I've got to go,
Got to leave the squad behind, 'cos I'm a tw*t!

Veron! Ooh -ooh - ooh
He doesn't seem to try,
I sometimes wish he'd never been bought at all.

(guitar solo)

(Opera Section)
I see a little packaged sandwich filled with prawns,

LAURENT BLANC! LAURENT BLANC!
HE'S JUST SLOW, OLD AND USELESS!

Brown & Neville fighting, very very frightening
indeed!!!

WHERE IS RIO ?,
Where is Rio?,

WHERE IS RIO?,
Where is Rio?,

Because Laurents far too slow! He's far too slow-ow-ow-ow-ow.....

I'm just a head-case, nobody loves me!

HE'S JUST A HEADCASE, WALKED OUT ON, HIS COUNTRY!

SPARE US THE WHINES FROM HIS GAFFER IF YOU PLEASE!

Here it comes, Open goal - Forlan must score.

HE WILL NOT!

No! He's simply got to score!

HE WILL NOT, NEVER, EVER SCORE!

No! He's simply got to score!

HE WILL NOT, NEVER, EVER SCORE!

NEVER, EVER SCORE, NEVER, EVER SCORE, NEVER, EVER SCORE.........

NO NO NO NO NO NO NO!

Oh where is Rio? where is Rio ?

Has he really stubbed his toe ?

Beelzebub take the Nevilles from my side, Oh Please ?

Oh Please, Oh Pleeeeeeeaaaase?

(Guitar riff)

So you think that I punch refs and spit in their eyes?

Would I kick Alan Shearer and leave him to die?

Oh baby, Even though I seem crazy,

I'm Roy the Red, rich, thick and madder each year.

(Slow bit)

All the guys I've clattered.....even poor Alfie!

Now I've got a Court case...........I just want to
kick folk, you see ?

Tell me where did Mick go ?

stevo (stevo), Tuesday, 3 September 2002 12:36 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm still seething after last night. Stevo, your boys should have been 4 down at half time, shocking finishing by young Michael. Viana was shockingly anonymous. Gerrard was fantastic, as was Hamann.

chris (chris), Tuesday, 3 September 2002 12:40 (twenty-three years ago)

yes the Toon were somewhat fortunate especially with the defence doing its usual red-sea-parting impression everytime Owen got the ball, and young Titus forgetting to put his studs in....BUT (looks up book of football clichés) showed great character to fight back for a draw With Robert and Bellamy we've a great side, without them we're average. Viana never got into the game last night but believe me he's gonna be a STAR.

Frustrating thing about Hamann is he's exactly the sort of combative midfielder Newcastle have lacked since him and Batty jumped ship under the dreadlocked Dutch disaster.

stevo (stevo), Tuesday, 3 September 2002 12:49 (twenty-three years ago)

definitely, you were a different prospect once Robert and Bellamy came on (presumably they're not fit enough for a full game?)

Titus though?? the biggest baby in the whole wide world??

Hamann = best central midfielder in the premiership (i.e. he doesn't get sent off/banned for stupidity several times a season)

chris (chris), Tuesday, 3 September 2002 12:58 (twenty-three years ago)

It was a bit of a gamble throwing Robert and Bellamy on at all last night as neither are fit, though it paid off. At one point it was reported Robert might be out for the entire season with a broken back! Bramble has the talent, but lacks confidence and seems to loose concentration easily. 2 out of 3 of the usual hallmarks for a Newcastle central defender thus.

Hamman/Gerrard have to be the best midfield partnership in the premiership, when the latter isn't injured. Speed and Dyer did show plenty of fight last night ;-)

stevo (stevo), Tuesday, 3 September 2002 13:07 (twenty-three years ago)

Typical bloody Liverpool, still can't hold a fucking lead.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 3 September 2002 13:16 (twenty-three years ago)

seven months pass...
So it won't be the scousers and it won't be the geordies.

But who will it be? And will we have the definite answer on Wednesday night?

James Ball (James Ball), Monday, 14 April 2003 13:05 (twenty-three years ago)

No, Arsenal will probably win on Wed, but it won't be decided then.

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Monday, 14 April 2003 13:07 (twenty-three years ago)

Agreed, but winning that one certainly gives a real advantage and it will be big and important. Anyone fancy a meet in a Central London pub to watch the game?

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Monday, 14 April 2003 16:47 (twenty-three years ago)

I would actually love to, but I have to go and eat with my parents, and there's no escaping that....

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Monday, 14 April 2003 16:59 (twenty-three years ago)

Any further thoughts?

Personally I reckon it'll be a draw or narrow Arsenal win and they'll clinch the title either way. Hope I'm wrong.

James Ball (James Ball), Wednesday, 16 April 2003 13:22 (twenty-three years ago)

Hate to say it but I reckon UTD will edge a win. They just look so strong right now while the Gooners are misfiring. If the Gooners are gonna win, they'll need Henry to be on fire. Score predictions tho - fuck; 3-1 UTD.

Alex K (Alex K), Wednesday, 16 April 2003 13:29 (twenty-three years ago)

i want arsenal to win, cause they are potentially one of the best teams to watch ever, but after seeing united against newcastle i'm not sure which way it'll go...

robin (robin), Wednesday, 16 April 2003 14:47 (twenty-three years ago)

thing is, Utd HAVE to win something this season and they'll need a miracle to get past Madrid next week, so reluctantly i'm resigned to thinking they're going to steal the league from the Gooners

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 16 April 2003 14:55 (twenty-three years ago)

I hope United fucking tonk them.

That is all.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 16 April 2003 14:58 (twenty-three years ago)

It was a good game. Lucky deflection for the Arsenal equaliser, and I thought Henry was probably offside for their second, but on the other hand Campbell didn't deserve a red card for a very ordinary bit of shielding. I was pleased with a draw - I don't care who wins, really (two old pals are Arsenal fans, but the woman I have an upcoming date with is a Man U fan), and a draw suggests a tighter and more exciting finish.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Wednesday, 16 April 2003 20:42 (twenty-three years ago)

i'd rather Arsenal won, Southampton for the cup (not likely tho) and Utd to overturn Real Madrid somehow (Real lost 4-2 at the weekend incidentally)

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 16 April 2003 20:49 (twenty-three years ago)

Stevem is (again) OTM.

Mark C (Mark C), Wednesday, 16 April 2003 22:43 (twenty-three years ago)

one year passes...
REVIVE!

Revivalist (Revivalist), Monday, 19 July 2004 11:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Arsenal won't win the Premiership 2004/5 (if Viera leaves).

James Ball (James Ball), Monday, 19 July 2004 14:21 (twenty-one years ago)

enough stupid revivals. how about starting some NEW threads?

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Monday, 19 July 2004 14:23 (twenty-one years ago)
