Big Chris Elliot fan--anyone remember his Conspiracy Guy on Letterman?--but Daniel Stern kills me in Hannah and Her Sisters: "If you stare at that Stella too long, the colors just seem to float. It's kinda weird."

clemenza, Monday, 5 September 2011 17:30 (fourteen years ago)

chris elliot's letterman work makes this no contest for me. he might win just for get a life anyway.

what good Daniel Stern movies are there besides Diner and Breaking Away? (I've never seen CHUD, and Get Crazy is almost good.)

i'd say elliott's filmography can stand up to stern's too - manhunter, abyss, ghog day, kingpin - not to mention the superior tv career

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_i_qxQztHRI (Princess TamTam), Monday, 5 September 2011 18:18 (fourteen years ago)

the real knock against stern is that he was the voice of the animated dilbert.

the-dream in the witch house (difficult listening hour), Monday, 5 September 2011 18:20 (fourteen years ago)

jeez i totally forgot elliott was in manhunter

also i spent all this time thinking that elliott was in celtic pride. but it was stern!!!!

max, Monday, 5 September 2011 18:24 (fourteen years ago)

Stern is in Rookie of the Year, Morbs, which is pretty good as kid wish-fulfilment baseball movies go.

Zonules of Zinn (dowd), Monday, 5 September 2011 18:25 (fourteen years ago)

he also directed it

I hate baseball movies.

Stopped following Stern's career in the mid '80s, so i've never found him comparable to Elliott as I remember him with more hair.

Yeah, all the CE stuff on Letterman was wildly goofy. Also, he is the son of a comedy legend.

i had no idea anyone ever mistook these guys for one another or thought they looked especially similar

big spiritual hat club (some dude), Monday, 5 September 2011 19:38 (fourteen years ago)

they look mildly similar, but it's more about a certain vibe that they both give off that makes u want to compare them

lol at final credit on stern's wiki entry

Home Alone : Italian Adventure (2014)

buzza, Monday, 5 September 2011 19:47 (fourteen years ago)

i dunno i've always thought of CE as very distinct and singular (Letterman on NBC, Get A Life and Cabin Boy were all big formative experiences for me) whereas Stern is cool but not especially unique and hasn't really been the defining aspect of anything he's been in

big spiritual hat club (some dude), Monday, 5 September 2011 19:52 (fourteen years ago)

yeah the 'superior tv career' comment above for stern makes me wonder if i'm forgetting a turn he did on hill st blues or homicide or something.

i was talking about elliott ._.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_i_qxQztHRI (Princess TamTam), Monday, 5 September 2011 20:06 (fourteen years ago)

Bad News Bears is more about the American addiction to winning in general (like other Michael Ritchie films), and aside from the actors being able to play ball, I find 8MO inert.

incredibly middlebrow (Dr Morbius), Monday, 5 September 2011 20:12 (fourteen years ago)

balls, Monday, 5 September 2011 20:16 (fourteen years ago)

both have been kind of adrift since the mid-'90s, but Elliott has gotten back to what he does best with "Eagleheart" whereas Stern's CV from Bushwacked onward is fully depressing.

elliott turns up in tiny bit parts on (usually cbs) sitcoms ALOT

still weird me out that so many people apparently mix these 2 up, they have such fundamentally different voices/personalities/hair/etc. imo.

I rewatched Home Alone a couple weeks back, and as an adult, the Rube Goldberg torture sequence at the end is kinda hard to take. It almost feels like a dry run for The Passion of the Christ: by the time Pesci's head gets subjected to the blowtorch, your brain shuts down and the burglars completely cease to exist.

I can't imagine how parents took it

"You're such a species-ist." (Drugs A. Money), Tuesday, 20 September 2011 17:37 (fourteen years ago)

how is this even a question/comparison? I don't see what the two have in common at all, apart from being slightly bug-eyed I guess.

Yeah I've never misted these two up at all. Another Elliot fan here. I haven't seen it in years but there was a time in my life where I watched Cabin Boy more than any one person ever should. I'd revisit it now but I'm afraid I'd hate it and I don't want to tarnish the memory.

American comedy from this era is mostly unknown to me, I've never heard of Get A Life. Was Elliott really so hated and was the comedy scene really so macho?

Robert Adam Gilmour, Sunday, 14 December 2014 20:39 (ten years ago)

I think that guy is overstating things pretty majorly. Elliott was more cult/marginal than hated -- he was working for Letterman back when Letterman was the weird guy at 12:35, and Get A Life was on FOX back when FOX had like 2 hit shows and a bunch of stuff that was pretty much off the pop culture radar. Cabin Boy was the moment where a bunch of movie critics suddenly were confronted with this guy and panned him, but i doubt it was reviewed worse than Billy Madison, the difference was just that Sandler's movies made money.

I think Elliott kinda was ahead of his time -- he was more in step with the kind of that became cool circa Mr. Show but by that time he had already flunked out of SNL and was kind of an old guy, spent 15 years just popping up in Farrelly Bros and Wayans Bros movies until things cycled around to the point that something like Adult Swim existed to give him a proper starring vehicle.

some dude, Sunday, 14 December 2014 23:46 (ten years ago)

Totally agree with some dude. Show me ANY critic who didn't like Get a Life. It was universally critically acclaimed. People who knew Chris Elliott from his Letterman appearances loved the show and even people who were not familiar with him became converts because of that show. Yeah, it lasted two seasons... just like Twin Peaks lasted two seasons.
