anyway, i'm curious how many ilxors are still at least kinda sorta using this thing in september 2011

I am getting similar, but it is whiny privacy advocates bitching about the real name bullshit.

check it every day and post to it -- has taken the place of much of my fb posting. still getting added by about 1 person/day. i am not a tech journo. what, is nobody else using it? i will say that the majority of my feed is made of 5 or 6 people who post a lot. they are not tech journos either. wait, one of them is.

There ain't room for two social networks in my life much as I like the idea of some facebook competition.

So Google+ is some kind of a Facebook type of thing? I remember seeing it mentioned on ILX, but I thought it was just an advanced version of Google search.

To be honest, that's a rather bad brand name choice. With Gmail you know it's about email, and with Google Maps that it's about maps by just reading the name. "Google+" has no information value like that, it just sounds like the next version of the basic Google.

I think that's what they want it to become. Search with social bolted in.

Hence their making a big song and dance about G+ and +1s being ranking factors. zzzzz seo.

I check this every so often when I'm bored at work and have run out of all other internet to read. It is mostly just internet geeks and the occasional amusing/interesting contribution from Dan and Hoos.

It's my Safari home page, so yeah, but only one of my friends ever has updates, and they're identical to his FB updates.

I'm not following any people I don't know - I already have Twitter for that, and it seems like all the people to follow are techies or techie-friendly celebs.

I never heard back from that "keep me informed once the invite only phase is over or when new people are allowed in" subscription. Thought it was all over by now, tbh.

I follow a few tech pundits who talk all the time, so when I log into G+ (twice a week or so), it's just catching up with what they're saying, since they're all over my page.

I think a slower 'more exclusive' rollout woulda been better. like, give people exactly one invite. people loved this shit until they had it.

Limit is 250 people at a time, Ned. I can see them limiting that further or removing it in future, but from what I can see in my feed today, it's causing a lot of exponential growth in followed/following, so if the service is ailing due to inactivity, is a pretty effective stopgap. I could be wrong - it may not make a difference in the end, but I do think it's having the desired effect right now. I guess we'll see.

I had my annual glance at the tech blog of a vague acquaintance, and this year all the posts are links to Google+, and I guess Google hasn't invented threaded messages yet despite buying DejaNews a decade ago, cz the comments were full of tech bloggers getting mad snippy at each other's posts, but you couldn't tell what they were snippy about at all because they didn't quote and everything just appeared as a flat list in some inscrutable order

maybe it would all have been a fantastic wonderland if I had a login, of course

(inscrutable order: sometimes the posts seemed to be replying to things below them, sometimes above, but with no apparent threading - maybe it is just date order, I got tired of ctrl-F-ing in the futile hope of working out why some guy I hadn't met was angry at some other guy I hadn't met)

Google appears to have made some changes to its account creation process. Whereas before, all it took was an email address of any kind and some basic demographic data, now you are required to create both a Gmail account and a presence on Google+.

As soon as a business relative (?) asked to befriend me, I stopped checking it. I never used it much before, but after that request I realized it wasn't my thing anyway. I mean, I don't have facebook, so why bother with google plus, right? I think all in all I rarely am on social communities and whatnot.

Not entirely sure what Schemer is. Foursquare with the tumbleweed of Google+?

i know one other friend on google+, and that's only because i helped set up her notebook today and added her to it. she doesn't even know what it's about, which makes two of us.

I use it daily cos it beats my firewall at work and lets me chat on gchat. A few shrewd companies have stuck their ads to the abandoned warehouse, knowing they have a permanent space.

google did this thing a month or so where they asked you, as you were watching a video, if you would like to change your display name on youtube, i clicked yes and before i knew it i was signed up for google+ and receiving lots of emails. that lasted for about a day before i worked out how to remove myself from google+,

the insidious way in which google is ramming g+ up people's arses is frankly disgusting. also i had to adblock that big red number in gmail, search &c. 'someone who has heard of someone who has heard of someone who's in one of your circles for some reason has linked to an article about a bath!' I DON'T CARE

i still check it daily, but only because the app is in my ios social media folder, and also because 'er indoors likes kittens.

other than that it's still just a giant pointless glob of sharing, which sits in dissonance with all google's other offerings that at least give you something genuinely worthwhile in exchange for selling your soul.

apart from people's social graphs (which are arguably out of date despite all the nagging), i do not understand what google gets out of g+.
