"Maysles expressed his 'disappointment with the way the building seems to be changing' by telling The New York Times: 'What's so shocking is that the building is losing its touch with interesting people. More and more, they're moving away from creative people and going toward people who just have the money.' Even prior to this, both Gene Simmons and Billy Joel were denied residency by the board."

the 70s occult vibe of the unspeakable hidden within the everyday was so interesting, because it clearly (to me) morphs from the simpler/less interesting "squares hide dark secrets!" fixation of hippies to "everything's actually really dark!"

I think it fucked me up more than I care to admit
"omg there's something growing inside me who will soon RULE THE WORLD and DO BAD THINGS"
what other films are there about how weird and scary and creepy and alien it feels to be pregnant? the satanism stuff is entertaining -- polanski puts flesh on the bones of many more members of the cult than a director would usually bother with -- but this is primarily a film about the physical-emotional rollercoaster of having a baby, no?
i forgot it was so long and had to turn in an hour from the end (i am older than steven mercator): i love the feel for the rooms and the dakota building and new york at a certain historical moment; i'd totally forgotten the aerial shot that opens it, moves from central park to the insane spires and towers and turrets of the dakota, you could set gormenghast there
when she comes in and says "i got a haircut at vidal sassoon!" and her (horrible horrible) pseudo-boho husband looks at her (and talks to her) like she said "i got a sex change in a crack den"
it is because polanski is one of the world's high-end mancreeps that he is prepared to go the extra mile and get stuff like this right: the carefully approached silliness of the black-magic aspect of course provides perfect cover for something cronenberg would later approach more directly, but in many ways (sez me) less palpably memorably
or something: like i said, i missed the last hour and haven't seen the film as a whole for ages, and never in a cinema

a non-cringeworthy, oscar quality performance from ruth gordon, so must have been some black magic involved

Silly that Mia Farrow didn't at least get a nomination--she's so good.

condemned by the catholic church's "legion of deceny" which at that time probably served as further recommendation
