from the BBC:

The four English clubs in this season's Champions League have avoided most of Europe's biggest teams in the first round.
Manchester United have a chance to avenge their elimination at the semi-final stage of last season when they were drawn with Bayer Leverkusen.

Liverpool face Spanish champions Valencia while holders Real Madrid have been paired with Roma.

Arsenal's opponents include Borrussia Dortmund while Newcastle United's biggest threat will come from Juventus.

The toughest group appears to be Group G which includes former winners Bayern Munich, Deportivo La Coruna and Italian giants AC Milan.

G looks hella tough thats for sure, on paper newcastles group looks hard too, but then, are dynamo kiev as good now as 3-4 years ago? arsenals group looks tricky as well

I note that once more Bristol Rovers didn't quite make it (though at least we are above Exeter in the league, I note for Tim's benefit).

I choo-choo-choose Lokomotiv Moscow as my tip to steam into the next stage. Wouldn't it be good if all the Lens players were called Len? No? Oh bloody sod yer then.

Real Madrid in another decent draw shock. Ajax on the other hand got a draw that's hard to read. Lyon are supposed to be terrific. Inter and Rosenborg, seem to be solid and boring.

But fuck it: Litmanen wooooohooooo Litmanen wooohooooo!!! :) Welcome back home you, you...genius. Ermmm...right sorry.

as a liverpool fan can i just say "our loss is your gain"? hope he finally gets to play football after years of getting splinters in his behind. one of the games true entertainers. oh, and our group could have been worse, valencia appear to be on something of a downward curve <>

Hiya Omar, I knew you'd be around here somewhere, wish Jari luck for me.

Inter vs Ajax for my tie of the round I think, if Ajax keep playing how they were pre-season.

chris (chris), Friday, 30 August 2002 15:09 (twenty-three years ago)

Hi Chris. Yeah sorry I know you thought he was special, but Jari belongs at home. The Ajax boards were sheer madness today. :)

In other news Real Madrid win European super-cup in cat & mouse game. Roberto Carlos scores brilliant goal after a dazzling set-up.

Watch the Nerazzuri crash and burn YET AGAIN.

For me, the most attractive game of the round is probably Real-Roma. Of course since there are no British clubs in that group (which I'm sure they're pleased about) we'll be lucky if we see anything more than the goals. I feel a bit sorry for Lens - but maybe they will be delighted with the big, glamorous, no doubt lucrative games. I don't suppose they started the season thinking they could win this, so might be very keen on that kind of excitement. It's just the sort of draw I'd want Bristol Rovers to get (I am envisaging a ,major computer error somewhere along the line, obv).

yeah. Luckily they did draw with a Belgian team again so I'll be able to at least watch some extensive highlights. During last year's game at Stadio Olimpico (on 11/9 alas) Real played like angels during the second half.

Pfff, Nando Rafael, I dunno. He has promise but I have heard the same thing said about Quansah ("the new Garrincha") and he still hasn't made the first team. Jari though, he makes other players better, he becomes the brain and soul of a team.

Omar, Saturday, 31 August 2002 06:40 (twenty-three years ago)

i heard that rafael went to hertha berlin yesterday?

bob zemko (bob), Saturday, 31 August 2002 10:01 (twenty-three years ago)

hey kids, where's this year's premiership thread anyhoo? and who dare title it? also, if you fancy it i've got a private league thingy on the yahoo premiership fantasy football if you want to test yr footy skees. after you've set up your team the group is #11118 and the password is carsmile.

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Saturday, 31 August 2002 10:16 (twenty-three years ago)

Yes Bob they had to sell him, some stupid law concerning non-EU residents (long story).

Omar, Saturday, 31 August 2002 10:34 (twenty-three years ago)

OK, Steve: I have joined your league. Obviously the two people who got in before now have a big head start, but there's plenty of time. It's a bloody complicated system they are running, and it looks as if it will repay careful work before every weekend, so it might be the person who spends most time on it who wins.

I'll note again that I am the current ILX fantasy league world champion, after my victory in the World Cup one, so I have high standards to which to live up. I'll try not to let the pressure of expectations get to my boys.
