So this is happening soon and upgrades are $14.99 or something! Is it worth it? Let's talk about Windows 8.

― continental op (doo dah), Friday, 26 October 2012 19:50 (thirteen years ago)
Article in the paper today saying how Steve Ballmer was for the chop if it didn't set ilx alight.

I heard Win8 was WYSIWYG!
― Aimless, Friday, 26 October 2012 20:00 (thirteen years ago)
I'm going to try it out but I don't think I like the GUI redesign... Win7 looks great, I don't want my desktop to look like a smartphone.
― Frobisher the (Viceroy), Friday, 26 October 2012 20:05 (thirteen years ago)
fyi I don't remember what it's called but the mode where you actually go in and manipulate the stuff in your file system basically looks like Win7
the tiles are basically a shortcut/splash screen system from the 15 minutes I spent playing around with Win8
― Gandalf’s Gobble Melt (DJP), Friday, 26 October 2012 20:08 (thirteen years ago)
it's called the "desktop", and yeah everything substantial you need to do seems to dump you back there, making the Metro tile interface feel like a veneer. I think Win8 is all about creating the impression that MS has one interface that runs across PCs, tablets, and phones, though in reality their Surface tablet-with-keyboard runs Windows RT which won't run extant Windows apps and works differently, and Windows Phone is also a completely different animal.

The tiles seem like the equivalent of Windows Desktop in Win98, IOW the very first thing you disable when configuring the OS for your personal tastes.

not Windows Desktop, I mean Active Desktop
Supposed to boot faster

It's the wig maker that Donald Trump uses.

Goddamn, the Windows 8.1 install takes over an hour. And Classic Shell is still required.

In 'Metro' you can't customize your background unless you sign into a Microsoft account
― Gotta take it slow in your fast ride (calstars), Monday, 9 December 2013 20:49 (twelve years ago)
My mistake, you have to activate it first

PDF'ing has gone a bit weird and i can't close Skype w/out task manager.
― Roberto Spiralli, Thursday, 6 August 2015 14:34 (ten years ago)
never use either of those applications, so cant comment.
but all good.
love the new start menu it makes live tiles actually useful, as reported the new search is super fast, and the multiple desktop thing is a very nice addition.
― mark e, Friday, 7 August 2015 09:25 (ten years ago)
Words cannot express my hatred of this garbage operating system. Switched the computer on this morning and went to make breakfast, came back to "Updating Windows" Great, thanks for asking, no it's not like I wanted to use it or anything. 92% done, was 81% three hours ago. It's currently 'configuring settings' which apparently is some Sisyphean task. I do actually need to print something in the next few hours, yeah?
― ledge, Wednesday, 16 March 2016 13:36 (nine years ago)
Windows 10 deletes my game controller driver every time it updates, and updates can't be turned off.
― remove butt (abanana), Wednesday, 16 March 2016 18:58 (nine years ago)
When it finally finished (another three hours later) I logged in to be confronted with no desktop, just glowing text saying "you've been updated", "all your files are still in the same place", "new features blah blah ps don't turn me off thx", with no indication as to when it was going to shut up and just let me use it. Have never felt a stronger desire to ring up and yell at bill gates.
