Where can I find a decent box-set/omnibus of Asterix? Anyone know of one? Preferably I'd like all the Goscinny ones as separate books.

Tossup between Obelix & Co, Cleopatra and Britain for me. Wish I could get my hands on all of these to re-read.

voted Roman Agent for the psychological warfare

there are various hardcovers that collect more than one asterix volume, but no box set as such - still think you're better off buying the individual volumes

Legionary because OLD HAIRY NOSE.

sex, doughnuts & rock 'n' roll (King Boy Pato), Wednesday, 28 September 2011 10:17 (fourteen years ago)

They're about £6 each on Amazon, which isn't too bad, but still a fair amount of dosh if I want to get most of the best ones.

Legionary is as funny as fuck, i wanna re-read these from start to finish too.

Dios mio! This kid is FUN to hit! (Noodle Vague), Wednesday, 28 September 2011 10:21 (fourteen years ago)

Wasn't ASterix and Cleopatra the one that was almost impossible to find in anything other than "book of the film" form with descriptions underneath the frames but no speech bubbles. So many childhood disappointments right there.

Voted Asterix and the Black Gold but there are greats galore in that list.

Upt0eleven, Wednesday, 28 September 2011 10:25 (fourteen years ago)

I'll need to read the ones I own again, but from memory I especially loved Big Fight, Chieftain's Shield and Corsica. Going to be difficult to pick one to vote for.

I still have Asterix and Cleopatra at home, although I do remember it being quite a difficult one to get hold of as a kid. First one I read was Legionary. Basically I owe my reading skills in English and French to Asterix.

Cleopatra with Mansions Of The Gods a close second.

16. Asterix in Switzerland (1970)

henri grenouille (Frogman Henry), Wednesday, 28 September 2011 10:43 (fourteen years ago)

oh yeah - didn't see it! I remember enjoying it though.

henri grenouille (Frogman Henry), Wednesday, 28 September 2011 10:46 (fourteen years ago)

*an awful lot

henri grenouille (Frogman Henry), Wednesday, 28 September 2011 10:46 (fourteen years ago)

Mansions of the Gods probably the one I remember best, increasingly dim recollections of Soothsayer, Cleopatra, two or three others that I can no longer distinguish. Wonder if my parents still have them...

ledge, Wednesday, 28 September 2011 10:49 (fourteen years ago)

I have not read most of these for a long time, but Asterix and Cleopatra was my childhood favourite.

Is Belgium the last one written by Goscinny? I remember thinking "and Son" and "Magic Carpet" weren't quite the real thing as a kid, but I didn't realise "Great Divide" and "Black Gold" were Uderzo-only, though I might be confusing Great Divide and Great Crossing.

Same with me. I think even as a kid I remember thinking they'd truly jumped the shark once they started flying around on magic horses in Magic Carpet.

i do not think you remember thinking they'd jumped the shark :P

which one has the most orgies in it?

Upt0eleven, Wednesday, 28 September 2011 11:00 (fourteen years ago)

great crossing + asterix and obelix discover america, v funny viking names (eg 'Hereendethelesson')

great divide - village is split in two, some dodgy romancin'

it was only recently that i found out that anthea (asterix translator) bell is martin (white-suited MP) bell's sister!

xpost
Asterix in Switzerland has lots of fondue orgies!

Ward Fowler, Wednesday, 28 September 2011 11:03 (fourteen years ago)

I love how the cover of Cleopatra is a little homage to the Cecil B Demille epic movies.

Asterix the Legionary always and forever. Old hairy hands!

Whither The Twelve Tasks of Asterix?

ledge, Wednesday, 28 September 2011 11:27 (fourteen years ago)

Unfortunately they’ve removed the De Mille Cleopatra cover on the new reissues :(

Almost any of the Goscinny stories (except Asterix Gaul, Asterix and the Goths and Asterix in Belgium) were at one time or another my favourite. Interesting to see the love for “Legionary” – I must re-read that.

I just re-read Asterix in Corsica this weekend – it’s actually proper ha-ha funny in parts, not just quaintly amusing funny. Asterix (the character) barely figures or says anything in it at all, apart from conveniently saving the day at the end.

Of the Uderzo books, “Great Divide” is still pretty classic, I think.

Think this was a story book rather than a comic, right?

Yo wait a minute man, you better think about the world (dog latin), Wednesday, 28 September 2011 11:34 (fourteen years ago)

From the film, yeah, but also a rare and abridged comic book according to wikipedia - which I do seem to recall reading at some point.

ledge, Wednesday, 28 September 2011 11:48 (fourteen years ago)

Sad there were so few votes, but a worthy winner. I voted Corsica because it stuck in my mind longest, but I specifically remember re-reading Legionary and thinking how strong it was.

Mark C, Wednesday, 5 October 2011 09:00 (fourteen years ago)

Right winner, disappointing turnout.

I just received an Asterix omnibus from my awesome girlfriend! It has The Gaul, Golden Sickle and Goths - can't wait to rediscover these. Don't think I've ever read the first one.
